Registered here just because of this (and also because I love JA2 and the 1.13 mod and this is the best community in that regard).

Ok, so here's what I'm trying to do. I want to start a Let's Play on a forum that I frequent but I want the visitors on that forum to have more of a say in the game, starting with being able to have their own, personalized merc in the game. Some questions in that regard:

1)I've played around with the mercprofiles.xml table in the 1.13 directory with varying degrees of success. I've noticed that the changes I make only reflect in the game if I start a new game - obviously this is an issue if I want to include latecomers to the thread who also want a personalized merc. Best option I've found around that is to gather as many people who want to play as possible and modify the relevant profiles before I actually start the game, leaving 5 IMP slots open for latecomers.

Is there a way around this? I don't think so, but I thought I'd ask anyway, in case I'm missing something.

2) Any suggestions in regards to the editing of the profiles.xml? Is there a dedicated editor I should use or is the raw just the best way to go? Anything I should look out for?

And that's basically that. I hope I've got this in the right forum. I think so, at least. Smile

Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

1. I haven't tried myself to edit mercs' stats in savegames, but at least as long as you just change some numerical values within byte's borders, editing (in hex) savegame(s) to change mercs' stats should do the trick just fine. In theory. Of course, you'd need to know where these values are stored (or methods to locate them if there is no permanent location). I can't help you with this, but perhaps others can.

2. I heard somewhere in this forum that there is dedicated one, but i forgot where. Perhaps you'll find somefing useful in http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=186118&page=1 and/or in http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=301047&page=9 (personally, i second what Rowa said about "Notepad++": it's a must-have).

Good luck!

1) the easiest and safest way is to run a debug version of the game in visual studio and edit those values on the fly. of course that needs some coding knowledge.

2) there is an editor for manipulating the mercprofiles.xml file and a few others one. you can find thus editor in your ja2 1.13 install directory. next to the xml editor and the ini editor.
sure you can always use notepad, but that can be error prome.
