I am getting ready to purchase a new gaming PC and trying to decide if I want to upgrade to Windows 8, or stick with 7. I have not seen or played with win8 yet, only read a bunch of reviews, which all had mixed impressions. So what I am asking here is, have any of you taken the Win8 plunge yet? And if so, what are your likes and dislikes and is Win8 worth upgrading too regardless of the negative aspects of it, and having to completely learn a new operating system.

Peace

MM

8 doesn't use DirectX 9 anymore, right? Sounds like a downgrade full of problems to me.
7 works so I say stick with that for now.

From what I have read Win8 supports directX 9,10 and 11. Not sure if there has been any problems with directx 9 though.

Looks like no one here is using Win8 yet. Guess I will have to be the guinea pig. Or not. I am truly undecided. Been reading over at the win8 forums and it was no help. I will probably make a final decision at the last second. But at the moment I am thinking about sticking with 7. Win8 just does not seem all that popular yet, and looks like it has a lot of bugs.

I tried the Win8 Preview on my EEE B202 (I botched the XP partition's .Net, preventing the XML Editor from running, and couldn't be bothered to redo HDD that week). Good news is that the XML Editor worked just fine under Win8, bad news was that Jagged Alliance 2 (stock and v1.13) would not run under it. The system wasn't powerful enough to test anything else.

I'm able to run Ja2 1.13 build 4870 on both windowed & full screen; unable to run Original Ja2 Gold though. Smile

To get e best of both worlds, maybe u can look at getting a new win7 64 bit license first n then buy e upgrade offer @ USD14.99.
http://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US
Do take note:
1. It can only b installed on a system w an existing OS, not for blank hard disk. U can do a clean installation after e OS verification.
2. Whether is 32bit or 64bit upgrade installation medium is determined by ur existing 32/64bit OS.

Cheerz,
Buggler

Edit: Test-played on A9 Omerta

Welp, I stuck with Win7 pro. Win8 looked just a little to far out in left field for me to have too "learn" a new operating system at this time in my life. Plus, from what I have been reading there is quite a few bugs they need to iron out yet. Maybe my next upgrade down the road I will go with Win8 or 9 or whatever there up to when the time comes. Anyway, thanks for the info guys. Smile

It's always advisable to not upgrade windows before at least SP1 for new version is available. Smile

Yeah, I thought long and hard about what I could get for the most dollar. I had a set amount of money and could not really go over it. I wish I could have bought a top of the line everything, but honestly to me that would be just a waste of money. So I compromised and did my home work and I think what I chose will hopefully last at least 3 years. That seems about how long my pc's last. I did look at buying the parts I wanted and building my own, but decided on a custom build from Cyberpower, as I would not have saved all that much buying the parts and doing it myself. Besides I really did not want to build it myself this time. So hopefully it will be a good pc and last at least 3 years. Smile

Well I had saved up 2000 dollars and had to keep my cost right there, so I squeezed every dollar out of it, and my total with 99.00 of it going to shipping was 1,955.00. So that left me enough for a couple packs of smokes and trip to mcdonalds. Smile

I went with :

Azza Genesis 9000 Full Tower Gaming Case w/ 2 x 230mm fans, 4x Easy Swap HDD, Dual Power Supply Support, & front USB 3.0 Port (Black Color)

FAN: Asetek 510LC Liquid Cooling System 120MM Radiator & Fan (Enhanced Cooling Performance + Extreme Silent at 20dBA) (Single Enermax Enlobal Silent High Performance 120MM Fan

HDD: 2TB (2TBx1) SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD (Single Drive)
I really wanted 1 or 2 solid state hard drives, but the biggest you can get right is a 512 gig and they cost is just wayyyy to expensive. Maybe later I can get at least a 250 gig.

MEMORY: 16GB (4GBx4) DDR3/1866MHz Quad Channel Memory (Corsair Vengeance [Free upgrade from 1600MHz)
Nice freebie upgrade there. I really would have preferred the G.Skill ripjaws memory, but I had to compromise.

MOTHERBOARD: * (3-Way SLI/CrossFireX Support) GIGABYTE X79-UD5 Intel X79 Chipset Quad Channel DDR3 ATX Mainboard w/ Dolby Home Theater 7.1 Audio, GbLAN, 3 Gen3 PCIe X16, 2 PCIe X1 & 1 PCI)
A good choice to go with the cpu I chose.

CPU: Intel(R) Core

Thanks, it's gonna be nice to be able to crank up the graphics on the newer games. Assassins Creed 3 should be a blast. It is suppose to be out pretty soon for the PC. Smile

Your new rig does sound excellent MM, enjoy it.
And keep an eye out on Amazon for XCOM:EU during Black Friday, I think it should be down to about $30, though not really sure about it.

I suggest you buy 32GB more RAM and look into setting up a ramdisk (loaded on boot). These things move data at 3.2GB/s (or more, that was some cheap RAM I was testing), 10x faster then SSDs.

Also, win8 is, in my experience, glitchy and cumbersome on a PC. I've had window rendering issues, couldn't see the desktop at all after a game crashed, can't get used to the fancy start menu. Also, the bootloader is slow and ugly.

It did play games a bit better, but on the hardware you got you wouldn't notice the difference.

I will get more memory later. Money played a big role in my final decisions. I forgot about ramdisk. That's software oriented instead of hardware. I will look into that. Yeah, Win8 just did not look like my cup of tea. And the reviews I read were not impressive enough for me to go that route. Smile
