Hi,
I'm not sure I understood how have you tried to access the hidden crates? From what direction?
Anyway, you should go to northwest corner of sector 20, up the river and traverse north there. Make sure you quicksave before traversing! Then you arrive inside the woods in sector 10. Take your quickest merc and take him to the north side of the pond and leave others on the south side close to the place where you arrived. The chosen merc should walk to the "alley" north/northeast of the pond until you hear -click-, then backtrack quickly to take him to safety before the serial explosion takes place. You need quick reflexes there and probably a little bit of trial and error, but it's worked everytime for me so far.
Edit:
Additionally you need a strong merc with full health and a crowbar to open the crates. Ivan and Wolf have worked for me.
