The maximum amount is 6, is there any way to get more of it? Alternatively, I was looking into making new or rework the old mercs, is there any tutorial on that? I can't seem to find a more comprehensive or complete ones.

The unstable versions that are constantly being updated have up to 10; 7 males and 3 females.

You need to have like 100 sound files or the game wont load

There should be a merc editor somewhere. Otherwise you can go into the mercprofiles.xml or whatever it's called with notepad++ and hand edit to your heart's content.

Thanks for the info. Tried out the unstable versions, gotten some odd problems with that, which is why I figured I might go for editing the original casts.

Was there a GUI-based editor that can easily edit out the names and stats without using Notepad? Kinda tedious to go through those using Notepad.

Try Notepad++ or similar syntax aware editor. Search for <zName> which will allow you to easily jump from one merc name to the next in MercProfiles.xml.

You can get 10 IMPs in the 2014 Stable version. Arulco Vacations has that enabled by default. It is this section is JA2_Options.INI, and this is what Arulco vacations has by default:
