Ironman mode bit down hard for the first time ever.

I had cleared out grumm, then holed up the lower left sector (item stash) and trained up milita everywhere with 2-man teams and succeeded in maxing out milita before any attack, then reunited the team. When it came however, it was 55+ soldiers who wiped out my 40 milita without any significant losses. I ended up restoring milita in the neighbouring sector, then attacked at night with only 15 enemies present and wiped those out. Soon after, surrounding patrols reunited again to attack grumm mine, and I put my team in the sector and fought to thin out the numbers while my 20 milita (didn't call for reinforcements) got slaughtered. Got a few good additional rounds going after milita was dead, then got hit badly by a stun grenade (5 out 10 of mercs unconscious with enemy break lights illuminating us; made it through with 25mm grendade launchers and crazy full auto fire that saw a few double kills) and had to flee. Had to wait until everyone was conscious again and spent one more exciting turn getting all mercs close enough to the map edge - but I made it! Most glorious battle of all time. I am relieved and select the whole squad to exit the map (to the left of the mine sector, into friendly territory), get automatically taken to the next sector and...

...get startup interruption, am in combat again (in a previously peaceful sector that still holds 20 blue milita) and all 62 enemies are *with me* standing on the map edge (mine sector clear). Game moves like half a turn, then crashes.

Now I've been warned about ironman problems, but this doesn't neccessarily seem to be one. I would have gotten wasted even if there had been no crash. Never seen the enemy travel with me right away, not even in city sectors where travel time is much faster so my ranger bonus can't matter much. What happened there? Is that a normal mechanic? As I said, I've never experienced something like this, and I would have been fine if the enemy had rested even only for one single minute in the freshly conquered sector. Did they somehow get "teleported" with me due to some glitch? Sorry if that seems a stupid question, but before this specific ironman game I never quite saw something like this happen. Is that normal or unusal? Can it be prevented? My radio operator was jamming during all of this btw.

edited for clarification
