To those questioning how plausible it is, not only is this possible in real combat, but the Russian scope mount (used on AKM, AK-74 and Dragunov among others) is actually designed for this. It's meant to be quickly detachable for close-quarters and reattached without loss of zero. Indeed the Dragunov sacrifices a some long range ability so it can be used indoors with the scope deatched. NATO picatiny rails don't allow it as a standard, but QD rings are easily obtained, popular among civilian shooters and ought to be included with some of the prices Bobby Ray charges for scopes.
At worst it would take quite a lot AP, but it's more than possible.
