What follows is a listing of my favorite JA2 tricks of all time. They make my game playing
experience much more enjoyable.
Note: Using these tricks will make playing the game easier. If you prefer more of a challenge
or you would rather play the game normally, that is good too ^_^.
The "Student" Trick.
I would like to kiss the person that discovered this. I'm afraid that I do not who that
special someone is. But I'd like to give them credit.
It is very very simple. On the map view screen, you select the characters, go to "Assign",
"Train", "Student", then you select the skill or attribute that you want to raise. Be sure to
do this for all of your characters at once, so that you don't waste any time (game or real life).
Then set the time compression to max (60 min). Turn off your monitor, if you want. And do
something else. Like chores, or even playing other games! Heck, you could even play JA2 on your
laptop, if you want
Check on your characters every 30 minutes. When they have maxed out that stat (85). Set them to
learn something else.
It may take awhile to max out everyone's stats, but it is _very_ well worthwile. Thats why I
said to do it for everybody at once.
The only attribute that can't be raised in this way is Wisdom. Most characters that you can
recruit or hire have pretty good wisdom. And I hope that your IMP started out with high wisdom.
You need at least a "1" in that ability to raise it. Getting one point in an ability shouldn't
be too hard. :3
The only possible downside to this trick is that it takes a long time (in game time). It should
take less than a day in real life time (I never timed it). I spend over 980+ day in game time
training my characters. I like to be prepared.
For "free" characters. Like your IMP character and Ira. There is nothing you need to worry
about
AIM characters... However. Their time is valuable, and they need to be paid up front. Not a
problem! Especially if you use my next trick. Be sure to extend their contracts for at least
1000 days. ^_^
MERC characters... This trick dosen't work with them. They don't have contracts.
You have to pay them as you go. This is sad ; ;. They are the ones that deserve training the
most. And I know how much some of you love Razor.
"The more thou sweateth in training, the less thou bleedeth in combat" -Richard Marcinko
Navy Seal
Don't forget to save you game every 30 minutes! It would be terribly sad to lose your progress.
(Note: This trick is best done right after you clear out Omerta (A9, A10). Until you leave
that area, none of the enemy patrols will bother you. So you can train in peace)
(Extra Note: You may want to go into "Options" and turn down or turn off the sound before you
begin extending contracts and training characters. As much as I enjoy the sound of my characters
voice, I'd hate to get tired of their witty quotes.)
Your stash! (almost infinite ammo)
You've got a favorite gun, but you only have one? Do you ever seem to run out of ammo, or medkit
supplies? With my trick, you'll never have that problem again.
I absolutely _love_ temporary files. In a creepy way. Ever since I played Fallout 2, I've known
how much fun they are.
JA2 keeps track of what items you have in a sector by using temporary files. They are located
in the folder "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\Data\Temp". Your folder names may vary.
The files that hold your items in each sector begin with the letter i (I). As in i_A9 and i_10,
for example. Pretty easy to remember, eh?
You can do this trick in any sector, but A9 and A10 is probaby the best place to store your
highly prized belongings. Omerta, it is your home away from home.
1. Go into the "Sector Inventory" screen on your map.
2. Put the items that you want to copy there.
3. Exit the Sector Inventory screen, move to the next sector, and save your game.
4. Create a folder to keep your temporary files in. You will be returning to this folder a _lot_
So give it a nice short name and make it really easy to find. It dosen't have to be in your
game directory at all. (in fact, its better if it isn't). I keep mine in "Ammo" on D:\
5. Go into "Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\Data\Temp", Copy the sector files (i_A9) and post it into
your "Ammo" folder.
6. Go back into sector inventory and pick up the items, then leave the sector.
7. Copy the file from Ammo back into Temp and save your game.
8. Return to the sector. Your items should be there. Drop your items there. Now you should
have twice as much stuff there as you had before.
9. Leave the sector, save your game. Go to Temp copy the file and paste it into Ammo
10. Rinse and repeat the above steps until you have enough equipment and money to outfit an
army for decades!
Amazing, isn't it? I usually do this trick with money first. Withdraw about $10,0000 and start
duplicating it. Keep going until you have a wad of cash laying on the ground worth about 2
million dollars. Now you can afford to hire everyone from AIM for many years.
(Note: This trick should work with every version of Jagged Alliance 2. Including Unfinished
Business, and whatever you might have. It really helped a lot in Unfinished Business.)
In my game, A9 and A10 are filled with uber equipment. All of it in 100% condition.
Uber equipment list:
$204,800,000 Wad of cash
6 full suits of Compound 18 Spectra armor (Communist Red Body armor).
No ceramic plates. They break, and I find that very annoying.
6 gas masks (My character always wear them)
6 Medical kits and repair kits
4 each Lockpicks, wire cutters, bomb detectors (give the "repair guy" one of each)
6 each of fully modified C-7, CAWS, HP5K, .38 S&W
4 each Rod and Spring, Barrel extender, Sniper scope, and Laser scope.
About 30 LAWs
6 Crowbars, Machetes, and combat knives.
TONS of ammo for each weapon. You only need enough ammo for one squad (enough to fill up three
large slots in your characters inventory). I overdid it and made enough ammo for 6 squads.
And thats about it ^_^.
In A10. I have tons of TNT+ Detonators for wisdom and explosives training. You should wait
until your character is at least level 5 first.
Endless battle
You either love the Hicks, or hate them, or you think that they are okay. I found a way for you
to fight with them constantly.
Enter F10. Perferably in the daytime, before you talk to anyone or start a fight.
Leave the sector and save your game.
Create a subfolder. Give it a good name. Give it a better name than I did. I called it
"Endless battle". I'm so creative that its scary.
Go into your Temp folder and copy every file that ends in F10.
Paste it in Endless battle.
Go back into the sector. Fight all of the Hicks.
Please don't hurt the cows.
If you can help it, avoid blowing up any of the buildings, as well. It will make the sector a
lot less pretty. And get rid of hiding places for your characters.
Exit sector
Copy and paste the files from Endless battle back into Temp.
I really like the Hicks. They are badass and they will own you with their shotguns, even if
your characters are decked out in the best armor and weapons.
Thats all of the tricks that I could think of, right off the top of my head. I'm sure that there
are many more that I forgot to mention. I hope that somebody enjoys these.
I'm going to sleep now. Goodnight!

So you have 3 tricks: training, copying equipment and copying battles. I do the training but copying equipment is a bit much. You could simply use the JABBI cheats or some editor like JAPE for that.... As for the hicks, you can endlessly fight them *without* copying files, just exit the sector, then re-enter. Some of the hicks (7 I think) will have respawned. You don't even have to actually leave the sector; in the map view, leave but then immediately cancel the move.
Anyway, here are a few tricks that I do.
1) Sleep as much as possible. This applies to mercs on the move as well as mercs training or repairing. When moving, go to sleep just before the hour changes. As long as you do, you will recover as much energy as you would if you had slept the entire hour. So in most cases, you can move from one sector to another which takes 1:45. When you get there, go to sleep for 15 minutes until the hour changes. Then move to the next sector. When repairing or training, sleep all the time. This is for 2 reasons; your efficiency at training or repairing is a function of energy so staying at full energy is most efficient, also, if you wake up at the end of an hour, you do the same amount of work as if you were awake the whole hour. Therefore, there is no downside to sleeping all the time when assigned to training or repairing (or doctoring etc).
2) You can plant a landmine. If you subsequently re-enter the sector (or simply save and then reload the sector) you can then *detect* your own mine, thus placing a blue flag on the location of your mine. These flags *cannot* be removed by the enemy (unless they accidentally toss a grenade on them) and they cannot move through them. This means you can use them to channel the enemy. For instance, you can fix holes in fences or block doorways. In the Meduna garden sector, I sometimes dig up all the mines and replant them in such a way that incoming enemy troops have to zig-zag back and forth in front of my position. In Drassen, I sometimes place a box of land mines in front of the mine entrance. This traps the Crepitus if they attack and allows a single merc to pick them off at leisure.
3) I recently discovered this trick in WildFire so I'm not sure if it exists in regular JA2...You can sometimes find stuff in non-containers. In other words, you can find stuff in things that you don't normally open, like cash registers for instance. Hold the control button down to get the hand cursor. Run it over likely objects on the map. If it turns RED, there is something there. Go there and search to see what it is.
4) You can sell crepitus parts to Mickey and Bloodcat parts to Gabby as well as vice versa.
5) Kingpins mob will respawn like the hicks as long as some named characters like Madam or Frank remain alive.

The landmine trick does require a lot of mines, but that is generally not a problem. The Meduna garden sector has enough landmines scattered around to build a decent maze. The Drassen mine area needs extra landmines, I usually dig them up from Cambria SAM.
I haven't escaped from prison, although I know it's possible. It just doesn't interest me.
Here are some more tricks I use:
6) Clean out the Bloodcat lair with a single merc using hand to hand combat. You can do this with any merc, even Shank. Basically, I drop into the sector at night via the helicopter. I do NOT go to tactical mode! If you do, you will be in the middle of the lair surrounded by bloodcats! Instead, stay in map view and move north, then cancel the move. When you go to tactical mode, you will be near the top edge with no cats in sight. Stealthily work your way south to the lair. Just to the north east edge of the lair is a rock formation. In that formation is a spot where there is a rock in the 4 "straight" directions (NE,NW,SE,SW). Move there. If you are spotted, run to that spot. Once there, you can shoot any cat you see or simply fire into the air. This will attract all the nearby cats, probably over a dozen. When they get there, they will cluster around your position but because the rocks are in the way, they cannot attack you! On the other hand, YOU can hit them on the diagonal directions (N,S,E,W)! So simply beat them all to death one by one. Eventually, you run out of cats. Sometimes you can move out of your position and fire your gun to attract more, then run back. Other times, you have to track down the remaining cats yourself.
7) I always use camoflage kits when attacking a town. Since it only takes 5 minutes to move to each sector, a single application will last until you conquer the town.
Remote control explosives can be very handy when attacking Kingpin. Since you begin "friendly", you can move around his compound planting explosives in key locations. A particularily good location is at Spikes feet since the bar is otherwise a bit difficult to assault (only one door). You *could* use the same tactic with the Hicks but that would be overkill. Anyway, you seldom have many remote controlled explosives that early. Another good location for this is the underground sector of Orta. Once you pull a switch, gas is released, a number of doors open and elites come out of the control room. That makes it a good place to catch them with a remote controlled bomb. To increase the effect, you could also place RDX on top of your bomb. In Wildfire, you could also place a mustard gas grenade on top.
9) Sometimes, when an enemy is behind a tree or a rock, you can toss a grenade beside them. The blast won't kill them (unless you are playing Wildfire or a similar mod) but it will knock them away from their cover so you can shoot them.
10) You touched on this earlier in your post about training, but I'll mention it here: Build up a huge warchest before you hire your mercs, then hire them for a long time (say 6 weeks or more) while they are still cheap. For example, in my Wildfire game, Raven starts off at LVL2 and costs $38,000 for 2 weeks. Now she is LVL7 and costs $120,000 for 2 weeks. So when I first hired her, I re-hired her for an additional 6 weeks as soon as she arrived. It costs a lot up front, but it's the cheapest way in the long run.

....more tricks....
11) Smoke severely degrades your accuracy if you have to fire through it, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to affect things you *throw* through it. So throwing knives and grenades seem to be as accurate with or without smoke in the way.
12) In early versions of JA2, you could punch the icecream truck or the Hummer in order to raise your ST/DX. This was particularily useful for those mercs whose conscience would not let them beat up on cows... But in the current version of the game, this is no longer possible. In addition, using bug elixor and sneaking in front of a crowd of crepitus no longer increases your AGI. There is one semi-cheating way to increase ST that still works though....load up your merc with as much stuff as possible so that they are overloaded (I've had mercs around 500% encumbered). Then set them to move to some sector (be SURE that the first sector they move through is NOT a city sector) but do NOT actually move there. Instead, cancel the move and they will receive credit as if they had moved a sector. This tactic does not fatigue your mercs, takes no game time and can be done on a full squad of mercs at once.
13) You can plant/dig-up a landmine ad infinitum and have zero chance of blowing yourself up. You can easily raise yourself from EXP35 to EXP100 in 5-10 minutes. Aside from the benefit of having a large explosives skill, there are 2 side benefits: A) you gain experience when you gain skill points by doing. Typically a merc will go from LVL1 to LVL4. B) A high EXP skill is pretty much required if you wish to place/disarm explosives in order to increase your Wisdom.
14) On many mods that give LMGs larger magazines (eg. Wildfire or SOG'69), an ejected magazine has zero weight.
15) Energy boosters are useful when a) fighting in the San Mona ring b) climbing onto a roof to subdue a guard c) running up to a enemy to beat him senseless and steal his weapon.

Training methods of questionable morality:
Hello Bane!
Thanks for numbering your tricks\techniques. It makes talking about them easier.
I haven't tried 6) yet, although it sounds like a lot of fun! I kinda forgot where the Bloodcat lair is at, and who gives you that quest.
If I get there, I'll see if I can copy that battle and save it in a folder. It sounds like a fun way to raise strength and dexterity. I never seem to get tired of hand to hand combat.
You're right. I can't beat up cows because it makes me feel bad. Although, I might feel slightly more justified in hurting those big, cute, and cuddly Bloodcats. Then again, this game allows you to do mean things to other humans. So... Nevermind. Letsnotgothere
12) Works very well! I must mention though. Although this trick works wonders for raising strength, it'll do nothing at all to improve your health. Keep this in mind if you want to make a team of six IMPs.
I created a new character, called Wimp. As I said before, I ran out of good names ages ago. 35 in strength, health, and explosives skills I hired a few people from AIM to clear out Omerta. Then she was on her own.
I copied and pasted my "Stash" files. Then I loaded her up on CAWs and ammo for the CAWs. The most heavy items I could find
I planned trips from A10 to A15, then cancelled them. And her strength raised really fast! She gained some experience levels to.
70 strength and experience level 3 for trips my character never even made. If only I could have done that for school.
13) Also works very well. You gain explosives skill and experience levels with no chance of blowing yourself up. Quicksave then quickload to find the landmines that you've hidden.
Geez. I used to think that killing massive ammounts of bad guys was the only way to gain experience. No wonder it took me so long.
One last trick I have to offer: How to avoid battles.
|_|
When you enter a sector that has enemies in it, the game will allow you to position your characters anywhere you want on one side of the sector. I've always found this ability extremely generous and helpful.
Here is my example. You enter the sector from the right side. You place your troops at the bottom right of the sector. You make them go down and leave the sector. Now you are on the map screen. Cancel your move orders, then you return to the troop placement screen. Now put them in the bottom left corner. Then make them exit and leave that way.
I hope that they can find a safe place to spend the night and heal their wounds. Why else would you run away from a fight?
I've really enjoyed discussing this with all of you, but I've started to wonder...
Aren't some of these tricks kinda, unfair?
We all play this game for fun. If it helps you enjoy the game more, then do it . I personally enjoy playing with a team that has 85 in all stats and lots of good equipment. Other people are too busy kicking butt and looking for a better gun to spend time training. It all depends on your style.
No game player wants to be accused of "cheating". They will be looked down upon by all of their peers. "Serious" gamers may ignore or treat them mean, no matter how nice they may otherwise be.
Am I a cheater? Maybe. Just because I don't use outside programs or ingame cheats dosen't mean that I am playing by the rules. It never says "cheat used" in my history logs. So, I should have a clean conscience?
How exactly did the developers of this game "want" us to raise our skills? Obviously, praticing or studying is a part of it. And for the rest, we would raise the stats in skills that we use most often.
And sometimes, it feels good to earn that shiny new weapon by stealing it from that guy you suprised and knocked out.
I'm happy with the way that I play. I hope that you are too

Yes, they are of questionable morality....they exploit bugs in the system, but then some people consider saving/reloading to be "cheating". Whatever....
Here are some more tricks of questionable morality:
16) In turn based mode you can detect unseen enemies by selecting a merc and plotting possible movement paths. The path shown (dotted footsteps) will avoid civilians and enemies, both visible and non-visible. So if you have a path that takes an odd detour for no apparent reason, there is likely to be an enemy there. You can then either shoot the target (preferably with a scoped weapon) or use a grenade. This trick is of less utility in towns though due to the presence of civilians. In addition, building walls could hide your path.
17) A similar trick to 16), you can detect invisible enemies in realtime mode. To do this, the merc you select must be prone. When you select possible movement paths, you will not get a path, like in turn based mode, but if you move your cursor on top of a hidden person, it will turn into a yellow cross. Again, watch out for civilians.
18) While saving/reloading often has the same effects because the state of the random number generator is also saved, there are slight differences. For instance, if you save before attempting to throw a knife and it fails, reloading and trying the same shot again will sometimes work. Or, if not, you could reload then take a few steps (in stealth mode) before throwing the knife. The system checks to see if you are heard so it uses the next random number, allowing a new number to be used for your knife attack.
19) In turn based mode, you might be prone or crouched behind sandbags (or more commonly, on a roof) and out of sight of enemies. Standing up then causes these enemies to appear. The problem is that you may get interrupted. A "cheat" around this is to try throwing a grenade. When you attempt to throw the grenade, you stand up. When you stand up, you spot the enemy and the grenade toss is CANCELLED. You are now standing and have enemies in sight and are guaranteed not to have been interrupted. You can now either toss a grenade or take a shot. Then crouch down and repeat next turn. This kind of tactic makes rooftops very useful.
20) You will often win militia battles if you press the "fast forward" button, especially if you outnumber the enemy. If not, then reloading will usually give a different result. This is one area where the state of the random number generator doesn't seem to have an effect.

By the way, I'm sure that many of you already know this one, but I felt that it was worth mentioning.
When you Import a JA2 savedgame into Unfinished Business, it remembers all the changes that you've made to AIM\MERC characters. And, of course, your IMP characters.
What I like to do is to hire 2 or 3 squads of my favorite characters, use the "Student" trick mentioned earlier, then import the saved game.
It saves a lot of time
I've found many lovely UB custom campaigns at Jagged Alliance Galaxy. In the downloads section.
http://www.strategyplanet.com/jaggedalliance/
I really like the idea of "Lightfoot Operations". A map that focuses on stealth tactics. And Tank Attack, where you get to fight against a lot of heavy armor.
I haven't played these yet. I've been very busy lately ; ;. Once I do, I'll let you know how much fun I've had.

Huh,you forgot the trick with the merc lying prone on a roof, and trying to switch to another direction, seeing in the process the ennemies without ever getting an interrupt.
Doesn't work in WF,as far as I know, but if you get on a roof in normal JA2,they don't stand a chance,no matter how many!
Faking to throw a grenade,(like Bane said),the process beeing cancelled if you see an ennemy below still works for me.

Speaking about cheatig: there is(was) a glitch in the game which allowed you to safely duplicate weapons, another one allowed you to duplicate any "multiple" item like ammo, batteries, camo kits, bug queen jelly bloats,compound-18, anything that can be stacked multiple times be it in the small or large inventory 'pocket'. Then there is the trick to "teleport" any item anywhere in Arulco. Back then, i used that trick to teleport any new acquired gun to Razor, who was permanently sitting in San Mona, 3 inches apart from Tony. And there is the trick to duplicate the Humvee, and you can steal the Tank Cannon too if you want. Cant fire it, but i wonder if Tony would blurt a bunch of cash for it .You can load tons of ammo on some crappy merc, make him sneak upon a tank(use smoke grenade) crouch him down and fire away! Gunfire cant damage the tank(except for rocket-rifles, LAW's, mortars etc)but each shot counts and your crappy mers will have 99 MRK at the end! Yeah, an jammed and utterly used-up gun tooo lol.
If you are bored, just slaughter all your militia in any SAM site owned by you, merc's abilities will improve. Then re-train them from scratch. You can put ONE spring on a STACK of rods and obtain a stack of 'bolt replacements' etc. And the list goes on and on...at the end the game is utterly spoiled and you:
1. Quit playing JA2 for good; 2.Quit cheating and enjoy playin the game the way it was meant to.
P.S.
Re: Crows: no need to do anything to make them re-appear, just scroll the screen(cursor keys) left or right so the rotten carcasses are not on the screen, after a second or two you will hear the crows picking again. Scroll back: there they are again. Repeat. Once Gumpy killed around 300+ crows in one session. Then my phone ringed, and i lost my count

@Bane
True, Bane. But, since JA2 is one game with an white beard (ooold!), i re-install it every now and then, and i dont want to bother with all those patches, Wildfire 1,2....4 etc, Burst-bug patch, whatnot. I just install JA2 (1.03), apply the Weapon-X's 8000+ save and pick a bunch of mercs and see if i am in the mood to get out of Omerta alive.
@Khor1255 :Khor, i dont think all those 'in-game' quirks or glitches etc are really worth the bother. Out there is some really tiny (Russian?) trainer proggie which allows you to give anything to anyone of your mercs, like 100-bullet magazines, bug jelly, complete X-ray device, unlimited cash/weapons/items etc.
Back then, since never found the FN P-90 yet, i used that trainer to check that weapon out.Tried to equip my IMP merc with two of those (ambi, NO). It wasn't even funny.Way too powerful. Back to MAC-10 for what i am concerned.
But, i am STILL hoarding any 50x5.7 ammo i can find. Weird, huh?

Have no one bothered about the Rebel Massacre? I always start off by recruiting Ira, going upstairs, telling her to Practice something, and then go down the basement again.
There, I simply kill all the rebels, usually starting with Dimitri since he's so dim he won't notice what I'm doing (i.e., he won't interrupt, as would Miguel). Pack up the loot and return upstairs, drop the loot, and head back down again.
Huh? There are the two anonymous guards, the six women and the six kids again! Kill them all (getting another 5.56 mag), go up, return down, kill everyone, and so on and so forth. This way, all my latest characters have started the game with 100 Mrk, 100 Dex, 100 Str and at Lvl 10 - in just under an hour in game time. (I create the alter ego with 35 in the stats above, and then use fists and throwing knives.)

Woah! I've never heard of that trick before!
That sounds like a great way to improve your characters, if you don't mind being a total cretin
Does Jagged Alliance 2 punish people for killing civillians?
I cannot kill innocent people or animals in games. I just can't.
Recently, in Fallout Tactics, I've been searching the wastelands for civillans carrying shotguns (self defense against bandits and raiders, I guess).
My character slaughtered those poor people just because she wanted some shotgun ammo (Ammo was hard to find)
After getting about three hundered shotgun rounds, I quit, and deleted my saved games. I felt really bad about killing those people.
One thing I hate about Vice City. Whenever I watch someone play that game, all that they do is grab a shotgun and start blasting away all the pedestrians. Or, they go on a chainsaw massacre.
I used to like that game. But, not anymore. Tommy Vercitti is a potty-mouthed jerk.
Does anyone feel the same way I do?

Mental, i noticed that long, long ago. I experimented with it and it was lame enough for me to not exploit the bug.I used to re-kill the Hicks and Kingpin goons too way back then, but it doesn't amuse me any more, so i quitted doing that.Hey the game is yours, do whatever you please, of corse. Plus, since i always play JA2 as a 'good guy' slaughtering rebels/citizen of Arulco/cows etc was in conflict with my whole point in the gameplay. A friend of mine killed everyone, i mean everyone in JA2(except the queen i think) and asked me" now what am i supposed to do?" I had no answer.
Whenever i stumble upon a game that captures my attention for several months, i start looking around, on the net etc. how to make the game last longer. Right now, killing Deidranna is at the bottom of my plans in JA2. First priority is to train (in the honest way, no cows/crows/trucks bashing!)mediocre or low-end mercs out of the pits of their uselessness like someone said.To me there is only one way to do that: killing more and more bad guys. So, i installed the excellent 8000+ 'mod' from Weapon-X. I am very satisfied with it, it places in EVERY sector of Arulco min. 32 enemies (plus the patrols/garrisons).
Now i dont fear the game would end too soon anymore, and all my mercs eventually reach lvl 10 and 100 in MRK, AGI, DEX etc.
I have always one spot free in my strike squad for training the 'greenhorn' of the moment. The last enemy in the sector is sorrounded, smashed with bare hands, and belongs to the 'trainee' of the moment for bare-hands basking (for STR and DEX increase). Strangely enough, currently that spot belongs to - Shadow! Yeah, Raven is quite happy to baby-sit Shadow. She is lvl 10 and i pay her 120.000$ for 2 weeks
My IMP is fightig only when he must, and yet, has under his belt more than 1200 kills at the moment(in a bit less than 200 battles i think).
Have fun!
Chazz.

Does anyone feel the same way I do? Haha, a bit. but not that bad. I couldn't kill Millie in GTA:SA. Well I did, but after emtying a clip into her I got the sad message "Your Girlfriend died" and I reloaded an earlier save..
