I have tried everything I can think of... I have never been able to hire Joe, even though he hints that he could be had "for a price".(never tried giving him a rocket rifle)

Elliot just continues to rant about the Queen "dealing with" me.

That puzzled me too, about Joe Pappanous.
Maybe it was just one of those things that was dropped in the final release of the game, and he was supposed to change sides for cash or something.
Not really much use for that "Mr.99" when you're already a few turns from ending the game.
They probably forgot about this, and didn't bother to change the speech files.
So,finally his price is...a few bullets spent on him. Very Happy

He has a price but not for hire.

Once I managed to give him money and he just left, and didn't turn hostile on my mercs.

But on the other hand, that's a waste, because he's not hard to dispose. He deserves to die anyway.

What about the old dude in the junkyard, or the security guard in Balime? Any possible uses for them? (other than target practice).

They're both elements in quests.

If you give Skipper (the junkyard guy) something entertaining (cigars or "Bustler" magazine are preferred), he hands over a key-card that can be used in the Orta weapons-development facility. Other than that, and possibly alerting you to the presence of Hamous in the country, he's merely colour.

The security guard in Balime is meant to be an 'obstacle' to your retrieval of the Chalice for Yanni and/or Kingpin. (I never bothered with the Kingpin side of that one, myself. :silly: ) Trip the alarm or let him spot you with the Chalice, and he'll start shooting at you; when you kill him, your popularity in Balime will be capped at 19%, so low that you'll never be able to train a militia there. Do it without setting him off (and it's not especially hard once you know how), and you can complete Yanni's quest and train the Balime citizenry to resist Diedranna's aggression. :devilaugh:

The annoying thing about Joe is that he always get the first shot in AFAIK. Or at least I've never gotten the jump on him. As a result he always wounds one of my mercs before I can buy him off. Well, at least he has more sense than Mike.

Any difference if Elliot is allowed to live, or if you shoot him down? I usually just shoot him.
