Hello,

Generally as a new player of JA2 I employ "Nails"
if I want stuff opened. If I wanted my own (imp) character to be able to do this, what skills are needed? I gave my latest character 80 dex,but he still can't open anything well.

Unless you have lockpicking as a skill you will not be able to lockpick. In order for your imp to open locked items and doors himself, he will either need a crowbar or he can simply shoot the lock off. A shotgun is best for the latter.

Not true, anyone (with mech skill >0 ?) can use a lockpicking kit. I use Wolf as a lockpicker in most of my games, even after I hire Trevor if he is in another sector.

Yeah, that's right, it's been a while since I played it. But anyway, I always used Barry or Trevor for lockpicking or someone with high strength and a crowbar. The door explosives are also handy. I think giving your IMP mech skill is a waste of attributes. They are far better going else where as there are so many Mercs in the game with good mech skill that there is no need.

I always start my IMP with 85 wisdom. The other skills, including marksmanship, can be started at 35 as long as you start with wisdom maxed out.

door explosive? Shaped charges?

Those must be the most useless thing I have ever seen.

I don't recall it EVER opening a lock in all the times I played the game (And I placed them with Barry)

I find they work effectively. Sometimes, and it is rare, you might need two.

Door busters rarely open a door, just on their own. But they will weaken a door to the point where it can be kicked or pryed open.
Some doors are immune to gunfire, but not to shaped charges.
I generally modify the items so that I can carry 4 in a pocket.

I made my IMP character have 85 Mech and lockpicking, figured I'd want a change of pace. Maxed out the dex, he can pick pretty well.

I'm pretty sure maxing dex. and mech. I'd never go also for lockpicking-overqualification.

Generally, any mercenary that can repair 10/10 or more lockpicks just fine.Wolf,Len or Vicki usually do it,without the lockpicking skill.Len(repairing 10) doesn't do it if Vicki(repairing 12) is in the team.
Had a Dimitri saying "not easy,I cannot do" even if he could repair 18/18, though.

Was Dimitri's dex low? If so that could have done it.

Actually,it was a Wildfire game(locks might have been more difficult to pick),day 150+,and his dexterity was 85,mechanical over 95 and wisdom 80+...,not to mention that his explosives skill was 100 and still bought it from occasional traps.

Wow. Might have been a hard lock or something, maybe once a lock is past a certain difficulty you need to have the lock picking trait. Does wisdom effect lock picking though?

Wisdom affects lockpicking,yes.
It was a long game, mainly because I wanted to have every merc in the roster with physical stats over 85,including health.
He might have been the poorest mechanic at the moment. Smile

About the only locks I can't easily get open are the ones on the chests at the SAM site in the main city. Shape charges don't seem to help and even my expert lockpickers like Dynamo just can't get them open.

Try Trevor. He'll get it opened.
