Hi guys,
this is my first post. I have been playing JA2 since 2001. Stopped playing about 10 years ago. Now I am eager to play the game again. Unfortunately, I do not have my orignal copy of the game, so I got the necessary files to run the game from a friend. I wanted to try out 1.13 but have not managed to run it without major bugs. I have tried version 4850 and 7435 (both in German) but I'm running into the same issue: The amount of ammo next to a loaded gun shows up as "??" in some cases. Alt+tab freezes the game every single time and sometimes random freezes also occur (music keeps playing but nothing else happens).
1) Are these common issues?
2) Any idea on how to fix them?
Cheers
Nathan

Hello NathanSolis and welcome to the Pit.
The (??) symbol is perfectly normal. It appears on low lvl mercs, without enough experience to know their exact bullet count during battle. Experienced mercs of higher lvl can see their exact amount of ammo, still available in their weapon, at all times. Once the newbie mercs go up a lvl or 2, they will be able to see how many rounds are still available. Just a cute, little mechanic to keep you on your toes
The 7435 stable version from 2014, requires the 7609 update to function properly. My personal favorite version and it works well with Arulco Revisited mod, version 1.04. There are much newer versions with a lot more features but since you are new to 1.13, keep it simple until you learn more. Here's a great website with downloads and a lot of information.

Lastly, you will be needing the Windows 8 Fix, you can search for it in the Bear's Pit, not sure where the link is. It allows the game to run in normal speeds in modern systems. Use the Search field, upper right on your screen, in this here website and you will probably get a lot more advice from others in this forum, that know better than me.
Update : You can use the I.N.I. Editor that can be found in the main JA2 1.13 game folder (not the Data folders), to tweak many things in the game, according to your game style. And if you have Notepad++ installed, you can further change more options in the xml's. Just be careful what changes you make. I suggest to read comments from others in this forum, more often than not, you will find the solutions you need without even asking around. Internet searches will certainly point you to Bear Pit website for solutions, or Steam forums. I don't know how familiar you are with 1.13, i am trying to cover the very basics here. If you have questions, ask away in this thread.
Final piece of advice : Take your time to explore 1.13 and it's mods, ask for advice if you find yourself in doubt and enjoy the new and improved JA 2. The game has gained a lot more replayability value, which already had in spades, even before the 1.13 improvements!

Many thanks for the reply.
1) The download links for 7609 (german version) do not work.
Any other place I can download this update?
2) I found something in my folder ja2/docs containing the windows 8 fix with a step by step guide. I assume this is all that is required.
EDIT: I think I found what I needed. I will try it out tonight.
