For the love of all that is sacred, can someone put together a guide for installing mods for idiots?! I've been trying to get Urban Chaos to work for hours now and there doesn't seem to be 1 accurate place that will tell me how to accomplish this. I don't want to go to multiple threads for parts of instructions here and there because they never end in success for me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I could sure use some help. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide a tired, old, and apparently stupid, JA vet.

First off what operating system are you working with? The trouble is a number of older mods such as the original Urban Chaos were never intended to be installed on things like Windows 10, but there are some fixes out there. Also there is a newer 1.13 version of Urban Chaos which may be more up to date.

Hey Rebel,
this morning i felt the same way, but it's not so bad. I assume you are using Windows 10.

Here is a step by step guide. Since you tried installing you probably already have most of the files needed.

1.
Fresh install of JA 2 (awesome game happy )
Don't install into Windows default location like C:\Program Files (x86)\.
I used JA 2 Gold and installed it into C:\Games\JA2_UC\
Protipp: Install your JA 2 into its own JA2 Folder (without the "UC"), then make a copy and rename it to JA2_UC. This way you keep your fresh install nice and save (to make a copy later for other mods, or to restart if something goes wrong during installation).

2.
You need the Original UC Data Folder. Rename to Data-UC and move into the game folder from step 1.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/uwxbz9t1zmf6gnn/JA2UC%20FULL%20wQFIX2.7z?dl=0

3.
Get build 8675 of JA2 1.13 from DepressivesBrot's Onedrive. Extract files and copy into game folder from step 1.
https://onedrive.live.com/?id=13A6926EAC52083%21583&cid=013A6926EAC52083

The newest build atm is 8796, with the INI fixes from Julix further down it should work with 8796 too.

4.
Finally get the UC-113 hybrid and settings from Wil473.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/rfcxnwcbk3sfr2b/Urban_Chaos-1.13_Full_Experimental_12_v4.6x_20190510.7z/file
Don't let that "experimental" tag scare you, it works fine.
Extract the files and copy into the game folder from step 1. Overwrite all files.
This will correct all .ini settings to make 1.13 compatible with UC.

That's it, installation done. Best way to start the game is by running the INI Editor.exe
Select INI-File "Data-UC113\JA2_Options.ini
Select your desired resolution
Hit "Start" button to start the game.

If the performance is bad or you experience screen flickering, go into game folder -> Docs -> Windows Compatibility Fixes
You'll find a zip file that contains "performancefix.reg".
Copy this file to your desktop. Right click and go to edit. In there, change the path to your game directory from step 1
e.g. "C:\\GAMES\\JaggedAlliance2_UC\\ja2.exe" it actually uses double backlash \\, not the regular single one \
Save file to desktop and double click it to apply it to your registry.

One issue that can happen on the new builds is a black screen when you are attacked and click on "go to sector"
Hitting E instead to go to sector works.

There were errors when launching for me,

https://i.ibb.co/jrR8LCg/error.png
https://i.ibb.co/kcRp7Hy/error2.png

but luckily it's just missing settings that can be fixed by adding relevant lines to the ini.

Here's the updated one (didn't change anything else yet).

Thank you for the fixed INI file thumbs up

I actually messed up the version numbers.
My guide was written for build 8675 (not 8796).

With your INI it should work for 8796 now too!

Just finished my playthrough of Urban Chaos on 1.13 build 8796. Just wanted to confirm its working great from beginning to end. Did all quest, cleared most sectors and had Arulco Special Division on. Queen Brenda suffered a terrible accident with an exploding 12 gauge angel

Big thanks to Wil473, Depressives Brot, Flugente and all the other people who keep this game running on modern machines!!!

I have made the installations step by step as outlined by Tengu_1 above.
I get as far as the games starts and I can recruit but after that - starting the game at the airport - I get:
Runtime Error: Assertion Failure (line 3005 in file worlddef.cpp)
I have Win 10
Any ideas?

Sorry no idea. I had 2-3 crashes during the campaign but none of them were reproduceable, after reloading it was fine.

You could reinstall to see if it has something to do with a bad installation.

If this is a reproduceable crash, you could send the autosave to one of the master coders on this forum.
Might take them a moment to take a look but they can most likely diagnose it.

Thanks Tengu_1, that did the trick :-) I must have missed some step in the list.
I've been playing JA2/UB w. mods on and off since early 2000 and i was early on Urban Chaos.

If everything else fails, download unstable modpack from the link in my sig, unpack it over clean vanilla ja2, select VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.UC113.ini (make sure it's the only uncommented line) in ja2.ini and run ja2.exe

1.
Fresh install of JA 2 (awesome game happy )

Done. gog version. i have the steam version too but i guess that doesnt matter. I installed it in a game folder on my desktop.

i downloaded the folder from the link, extracted it and copied the whole folder in the ja2 folder. i also named it "Data-UC"

Extract the files and copy into the game folder from step 1. Overwrite all files.

i started the game via ja2.exe in fullscreen mode. windowed mode crashes right away because apparently i cant use 16 bit. but i dont think that's the issue why in cant load the first sector.

Hi, sorry for the late response

I made a single click installer, give this a try. Just extract and override the files in the Jagged Alliance 2 Gold/1.12 directory.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/7l5pp3h5djnlnor/JaggedAlliance2_UC113_8796_SCI.7z/file

some bugs i noticed in this build:
when you are attacked with militia AND mercs in a sector, clicking on "go to sector" can give a black screen.
Hitting E to enter sector works fine. Or use autoresolve.

in the subways I sometimes got the infinite stopwatch bug. Hitting ESC a few times can sometimes fix it, otherwise just ALT+X to quit, reload and do a different action. E.G. shooting with merc 1 gives infinite stopwatch, shoot witch merc 2 instead and it works

Here is a SCI for a newer build of 1.13. So far it seems to be working fine and without the infinite stopwatch bug in the subways.
I haven't finished the campaign on this build yet tho, so you are beta tester too happy

https://www.mediafire.com/file/adpkeo8ukcqhcug/JaggedAlliance2_UC113_9144_SCI.7z/file

This SCI includes the Windows 10 fix by Someone64 using DxWrapper. Also it has a custom INI with pretty much every feature turned on: Enemy Helicopter, Tank patrols, Arulco Special Division, Enemy Generals, Dynamic Dialogs, stronger suppression fire, tougher militia, stronger weapon damage etc.
It's a lot of fun but if you don't like a feature just turn it off in the INI.

If it looks pixelated with DxWrapper I recommend using Reshade, copying these files into the game folder should do the trick:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/t5csaltfd06if66/JaggedAlliance2Reshade.7z/file

One thing I noticed in the newer build, the option "Auto Fast Forward AI Turns" slows down/speeds up the in game music. This can be annoying. This Option can be turned off easily in the Options menu.

Need some help - downloaded the two UC SCIs (great job with those). But:
8769 version is lagging even with ddraw fix. not sure why...
9144 version, which I would love to try, is too pixelated even with the Reshade. Smoothness is fine, but reading it is hard.
Any advice how to fix at least one of the versions?

Generally: yes, items can be merged from other mods.

You need
- the respective grafics from the folders
- the respective statistics from Items.xml

I don't know what exactly needs to be done, though. Sorry.
