I took

- IMP (NO/Stealth)
- Nails as trickster (switched stats with Barry)
- Fox as ambidex/nurse and Nails likes her
- Razor of course, close combat is king! TURRKEEYYSS

I'll add Fidel later and create a second team with Ice, Blood, Grizzly and Wolf.

Fox's doctor, Static's mechanic, Buzz's sharp-shooter. Cheap team, for 2-3 begining towns.

Depends how you want to start: Two or three good mercs can easily take the first towns, Omerta and Drassen, so sometimes I like to start with just the IMP and a one-day expensive bodyguard like Shadow. This works if you like to recruit locals because after taking Drassen you get two near-useless, but completely free, rebels on your team, and you might find Maddog and Hamous on location too. You also get a lot of kills for your IMP.

Otherwise you might want to start with cheap mercs, like M.D., Steroid, and Bull, who are effective for taking the first towns and holding them for a while, and can be trained up as well until you can afford to trade them in for the best AIM has to offer.

Or you might want average level but low-cost mercs like Grizzly, Fox, Spider, Blood, and Dr. Q. (of course you can't actually make this team because Grizzly's racist, but those are all examples of good soldiers) who will not cost too much to start with but who will benefit a lot from training and be usable througout the campaign.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up going with:
IMP (similiar to shadow with some extras)
Fox (reasons above)
Wolf (my favourite from JA1)
Ice (had money left over and wanted some good Mark)

By far my favorite mercernary, even more than my IMP is Dr. Q The reason for this is because of his personality and his ability to kiss some a@$. I thought it was so funny how he was able to throw knifes, do round house kicks move silently and kill lots of baddies with his whole attitude(life is so fragile :armsfolded: ). He is a great Merc...just need to train his Markmanship a little and he is golden! One of the best Mercs in the game.

Blood is usually on my team. The first thing I do is going to San Mona and get Darrens 15000$ :karate: and Kyles 10000$ :shake: . This is a nice extension of the starting budget at day 1. Ira gets into the club. Angel needs someone ohter than Blood or Ira to talk to, IMP with LDR 35 or e.g. Bull. Who cares for Dimitri, Bobby Ray's or Skyrider early than? With that kind of budget your next mercs can bring along serious gear. :rifle:

Most of the time I take Spider and Blood or Grunty. I used to like Buns, but I seem to have gravitated away from here lately. Igor is a good choice too. If I need to take a decent mid-cost merc I will take Thor, Nails, or Wolf usually.

Unlike most people, I actually like to use Ira (mostly medic and teacher), and Dimitri is another of my favorites (esp for grenading).

My playing philosophy changed with 1.13 though... I made a set of six IMP mercs for $18k and didn't hire anyone until after I took Drassen. Even after, I think I only hired Spider, Flo, and Gumpy (Spider for me, the other two for militia training). I have a LDR 85 IMP with Teaching, so she gets Flo and Gumpy's LDR up quickly.

IMP (NO/Auto Weapons), Raven, Grunty and Igor.
Those are my long term team members. they usually stick around to the end. Except for gloomy Raven, those guys are nice people i love to go thu the game with. One other keeper will be Cougar. I love Night Ops and those Auto-weapons guys. Lots of lead flying around at night...lot od damaged gun barrels for Grunty (and later, Cougar) to repair too hehe.

I prefer to hire AIM mercs exclusively for two-week intervals, which means I can only afford a couple of them.

Thor is excellent here. You gotta love the stealth combined with hand-to-hand, since he may get lucky enough to sneak up close enough to punch someone out and take his gun (although that's not an issue if you turn on the "drop all" option). He's got very good health and strength as well as the hand-to-hand skill, so he's got what it takes to win prizes in San Mona if you decide to head in that direction. Also, with his strength and a crowbar, who needs a lockpicker? He's also got good medical skill. His marksmanship is not great but it's OK, and he's got very high wisdom so he progresses nicely. His personality is a little bland, but there are other mercs which make up for it...

This seems to be a dead thread but anyway:

I personally like to bring my IMP(with high LDR+MRK), MD as a medic and cheap militia trainer, Bull to break doors/necks, Blood for silent killing, and Grizzly and Hitman to have 3-members firing squad. Then, when I have Drassen, I recruit Steroid (because he's as strong as an ox, or bull, and he likes Grizzly), Razor (his personality rocks) and, if I want some funny comments, Haywire. He's of no use, but he's funny. And when(/if?) he dies, Razor gives pretty awesome comments. "Haywire! Get up you asshole! I have seen you get hurt worse that that and walk away! Ok, anything for a joke, that's you." or something like that.

There are several great "starters":

Grunty & Igor
Hitman & Grunty
Bull & Nails
Grizzly & Bull

Personally, I like Hitman. And Grunty.

For the Blitzkrieg strategy...

Reaper (C-7)
Lynx (C-7)
Len (Commando)

1 day is more than enough to take care of Omerta, Drassen SAM site, Angel and Maria

Also if you take Drassen SAM site you'll have to extend Len's contract to train militia, while your IMP and Ira trains militia in other sectors, Woody!

Start with IMP, recruit Ira and manage your way to Estoni to get Maddog. Clean Drassen using Ira as killer. Recruit Dimitri. Now you have three almost useful and compleatly free mercs including lockpicker, halfmedic and throwing guy. If you take Maddog early he becomes kickass by the and of game.
