Is there a valid reason the standard water canteens can't be merged anymore?
As soon as I grab another canteen, the 4 attachment slots on the right side of the picture get greyed out, and if I insist I get an "Invalid attachment" error.

I checked the Items.xml, and the "Canteen" entry looks just like it was back in 2010, so the "mergeable" flag has to be hidden somewhere else. Anybody know where that is?

I definitely want my canteens to merge, it's extremely annoying to have to carry several half-empty canteens around, backpack space is precious...

There is no more need to merge canteens in recent 1.13. You can refill them, if the sector has water available. When you use "strg + ." a menu should pop-up- one entry there is "refill canteens". Which sector is having water can vary from mod to mod. In standard 1.13 it should be most of them. If I remember correctly, water availability is defined in sectornames.xml

Thanks for the fast reply!
And the secret information...

BTW I'm simply at the starting sector (Omerta A9), since I'm just trying out stuff to get the hang of the changes. And I'm afraid Omerta doesn't qualify as a sector "with water", there is no open water around.
Which brings me to the question why did they remove merging? I mean okay, refilling is nice and all, but why remove merging?... speechless

Just checked, A9 Omerta has WaterType=0 in SectorNames.xml, which is "no water here at all". For testing reasons you could change this value (sectorNames.xml has a description), but to see the changes you may have to start new (or a save before you first entered A9, so past IMP-creation is possible if you have a save).

I don't know why merging canteens has been removed. Maybe just seemed unnescessary to keep, or some code-restriction lead to this decission. You probably can try to make canteens merge-able again within merges.xml. If you wonder what merge-type is, you can look into Folder "Lookup" and there MergeTypes.xml. That is, if it wasn't for code reasons.

On a side-note, if you are testing much, it may is useful to know, that when you once created an Imp, you can just type in his Nickname in the field for IMP-code and save time to recreate the IMP (name instead of xep642).

Great! Thanks for the information: I've checked the attachment XMLs, but couldn't make head or tail of them.

Well, if my computer bursts in flame I'll know why merges had been disabled...
In the meantime I want them back, the capacity of refilling in some sectors isn't a replacement for canteen management, especially since my preferred base sectors don't have any open water.

Thanks, I know that, that's old, very old... I've discovered JA2-1.13 a long time ago, but retired from the forum and spent 10 years tinkering with 3356, till some days ago I decided to check how far JA-1.13 had progressed since.
Which puts me in the strange situation where I know my way around JA2-1.13 perfectly, but an ancient one!
It's like I've been on hibernation since the early 20th century, and now have to discover my way through the early 21 century... big grin

I just checked SectorNames.xml in default 1.13 and it looks like it could need an overhaul. On WF maps I used the following rules to set the water type:
  • Farm/Town -> has fresh water - we assume that they have at least a well
  • lake, river -> has fresh water
  • costal sector (not a town) -> has salt water, don't drink that!
  • swamp -> dirty water, don't drink that!
I think I should update the 1.13 file.

Still, how do you make the difference between a clean lake and a swampy pond? BTW in RL I wouldn't drink anything out of a river or lake either, not without filtering the heck out of it. I wouldn't even trust wells, that's where populations usually get their fresh dysentery, typhus and cholera from...
It's not a coincidence that clean drink water is one of the biggest challenges for 3rd world countries (Arulco is part of).

Anyway, I'm impatient to try to fix my canteens. No matter how much "drink water" sectors are out there, I want my mercs to set off with a full canteen, because you never know what will happen on the road.

Updated values for water sources are in GameDir 2563.

A what? suprised
What's a "GameDir 2563"?

Anyway, I managed to make my canteens able to merge again, it was as easy as opening Merges.xml and inserting:

<MERGE>
	<firstItemIndex>214</firstItemIndex>
	<secondItemIndex>214</secondItemIndex>
	<firstResultingItemIndex>214</firstResultingItemIndex>
	<secondResultingItemIndex>0</secondResultingItemIndex>
	<mergeType>1</mergeType>
	<APCost>32</APCost>
</MERGE>
("214" being the item code for the canteen)

Nothing bad happened, at least not yet. I haven't tried yet to refill them in a wet sector, since I haven't yet moved from A9 (I'm learning how to create weapon attachments right now. It's easy, yet tedious. I really, really miss the XML Editor...).
