Aw crap.
It was true for the WWII valve radio sets, but nowadays they are way smaller, not to mention we're talking "mercenaries" here, they would use satellite phones or some such.
Anyway, I checked "Flugentes Magika Workshop" and got the reason, Ente says "I know modern radio units are not as big as a backpack and don't weigh multiple kilos, but I deem this necessary for balance reasons."
Still not convinced.
I personally don't think this is that much of an unbalancing feature: I prefer doing my mortar barrages myself anyway (it's not like mortar shells grow on trees), and scouts do detect nearby enemies too, so IMHO the main use of the radio operators it to prevent enemy barrages by jamming.
I guess I'll have leave in my pack and will wear it when I need to use it.
