I wanted my mercs to clean their weapons, they have cleaning kits, but there is no menu entry to tell them to do so!
Eventually I found an old post** suggesting "Gun cleaning" has been merged with the "Repair" assignment:
silversurfer wrote on Fri, 24 November 2017 09:38There is no "Clean Guns" action anymore. Dirt is now part of gun condition (explained above). To remove that you need to put the merc on repair assignment and either have a cleaning kit (preferred) or toolkit in your inventory. Be aware the cleaning with a cleaning kit goes much faster than the usual repair with a toolkit.
Which brings the question, if the cleaning merc has both cleaning kits and a toolkit in his inventory, and the squads' guns are both dirty and slightly used, how do I tell him to just clean the guns and not bother with repairs just yet? (The point being time spent)
Well, some will wonder why bother - I don't really know, I haven't yet seen how fast guns get dirty in the game; All I know is that in RL I clean my gun every time I use it, and thus would like my squad to clean their guns after each battle, especially in dusty terrain. *shrug*

Thanks, that's reassuring.
If I may, a pause, potentially with a message like "Cleaning finished, go on with repairs?" might be nice.
I wouldn't want to have to stay staring at the status window, waiting to hit "pause"...
I also noticed that, unlike how things worked before, now when a militia training or repairing assignment finishes, the game doesn't pause anymore, it just flashes red (which is often easy to miss when you have lots of mercs and focus on something else, in another sector).
I don't think it's a good thing, as that pausing drew your attention and allowed you to immediately change the mercs back into "ready" configuration (as opposed to being attacked and discovering that, oh crap, they're still in repair mode, overburdened with long repaired items...)

Thanks!
I don't think there is, as apparently the game pauses sometimes, but not always.
Example: I had two mercs repairing stuff in two different sectors: One finished his assignment, he flashed red and the game paused as expected. After I compressed time again, the second one finished his assignment, he flashed red but the game did not pause this time. I've let it run to see if there is just some delay, but no, the game had no intention of pausing, the merc just kept flashing. That is new (well, it never happened in the past).
