It's been only seven months since I bought JA2 but there are a lot of folks here who are playing it ever since it came out.Anyway, my first-ever team consisted of:
1. Razor (IMP merc, obviously I didn't know at that time that there's another Razor in game)
2. Buzz
3. Raven
4. Razor (MERC)
5. Steroid
6) MD
That was my main attacking squad.The second squad had Mad Dog, Ira, Gumpy, Shank and Dynamo but I only used them for malitia training purposes because they seemed worthless at that time.

my first team would have been:
Ivan, gasket, shadow, vicki and who even else was in the demo team 
i remember kiling jake to get all his guns the first time though :diabolical:
my first full game team i think (a few years now) would have been: IMP, hitman, blood, buns, grizzly, MD

But I just realised that this guys after good training are able to beat all the game... so
Before Meduna i didnt know what with money so i hired nearly everybody from top AIM - fired Hamous, Dynamo, Shank, Vince, Flo, Biff, Gasket,....
And my team of 18 merks just rolled through queen palace..... Iggy, Conrad, Reaper, Scope, Magic...

hmm thats a long time ago! I think it was
Buzz,Buns,Raven damn I don't remember.
But later in the first game I surely hired Magic,Scope and Gus, only because I knew em from DG.

Hudson, do NOT get rid of Barry. Train him up and he's still cheap while he's damn good with explosives and mechanical stuff. He's a good line-grunt too.

My first team was not exactly an all-star formation.
IMP
Meltdown
Malice
Barry
Igor (~ my one good choice)
Bull
Steroid
Ira (~ doesn't really count I suppose, being free)
To be honest I really have no idea what I must have been drinking to come up with THAT lineup. Personally, I think my biggest mistake was Barry; there is just no need for an explosives guy that good so early in the game. I was definitely still on my Jagged Alliance "Must-hire-Fidel-first-day" mentality.
First SAM site was an absolute treat, let me tell you.  Nobody outright died, but some of my guys spent a looooong time there getting healed afterwards, lol. Learned from that first day mistake, that's for sure. Bring in Ice, Grunty, Blood, etc.!

Wow, was this a long time ago!!!
Let me think, first off, my IMP sucked!! LOL He was ambi/MA .. not bad I guess, right? Well his strength was low like 60 (I had no idea what this would mean). He had 85 mrkmshp and stats around 60-70 with everything, explosives, med, mech, etc.
My team:
Grizzly
Steroid
Buns
Buzz
Wolf
I think this was the first team I was able to assemble. I had no idea about training militia, repairing items (guns were jamming on me like mad I recall ) or combining items.
It was great fun, and over the course of the next several run thru's JA2 really began to shine (I didnt play the demo). I was hooked, no doubt, as the depth of the game continued to impress me.
Then when I discovered this board my interest skyrocketed as I discovered so many new things!!
Thanks to everyone at BP I am a JA2 addict!

My first team was based on who was cheap and available. I took Bull, Grizzly, MD and Barry, along with my IMP (NO, maybe stealth).
I still do, they make a damn good team.
I also get:
Ira (free, so why not, she learns well)
Maddog (for the one-liners)
Dynamo (handy as a cargo carrier on the chopper)
Shank (same as above, plus Estoni as a chopper base)
Dimitri, Carlos, Miguel (pack-horses)
I get Lynx, Wolf and Scope to act as a scout team while the others back them up. The capable guys act as a rifle/assault team while the others are my artillery/fire support.

Hadn't played DG before-in fact, hadn't played many RPGs at all. My first team was way back when JA2 first came out;
IMP-"Slash". Pretty useless, had high marksmanship, but everything else was "well-rounded", 'cos I had no idea that things like strength could be improved quite easily or that high wisdom would be needed to improve other stats. A "jack of all trades and master of none" would be a fair description.
Buns-probably my best choice-at least she could hit something.
Hitman-OK, I suppose-seem to remember him never having enough APs to really make any impact.
Blood-someone I hire regularly now. He's a great early stage merc (plus comes in useful for the prize fights), but at the time he was wasted-didn't really know how to play the game. I'd never use stealth or crouch/crawl, I'd fight during daylight and didn't repair guns. Consequently all my mercs took a lot of hits-and Blood, due to him usually being point because of his stats, took more than most.
Fidel-same as Blood but without the plus points. Seem to remember him blowing himself up a few times.
Steroid-I might have got him too-made me laugh a bit, but he got shot a lot too.
In fact, Fidel and Steroid died fairly quickly.
I had no idea when I started the game-I managed to capture Drassen, but didn't locate Skyrider or the SAM site. I don't think I even bothered training militia in Drassen. Consequently, I ended up walking all the way to Chitzena, Steroid got killed along the way. I tried taking the town, but with my sophisticated tactics I found the bad guys far too tough and retreated to San Mona.
San Mona was great-no bad guys, and I found Tony's shop. Problem was I didn't know Tony was in it and had no idea how to get past Hans. In the end I blew a hole in the side wall, but Fidel killed himself in the process. From there it was on to Cambria where my first encounter was with T-Rex. He made short work of Blood and Hitman, leaving the redshirts only my IMP and Buns. They didn't last long....
Those were the days, eh? Still, it's some testimony to JA2 that I could get hooked on a game that I was so useless at.

Well I first played the demo so that would have to be Ivan, Gasket, Vicki, Shadow, Dr. Q and some other person. When I got the full game, it was my IMP, Buns, Hitman, Blood(those three because the game manual suggested it), and MD. Of course Ira soon joined.
