I'm having a problem with my JA and DG games. I can't get them to start. Everytime I click to start the game the starting screen disappears before the game has even started. The same thing happens with setsound and everything else. Anyone here know what the problem might be? I have Windows XP.

Did it work before? I had no trouble with JA the last time I ran it, but there's been 'data execution prevention' added to Windows since the last time I played.
Have a look here for details:

It works fine with vdmsound or dosbox... and you can even get your multiplayer games to work using dosbox Smile I finished 2 cooperative 25-mission campaigns already Smile

I'm not sure, but chances are they've never worked on my new comp (haven't played them at my place in a long time). Anyone know what can be done to get them to work? That Microsoft link is really difficult to understand for someone who's not good with computers. Uh Oh

I'd take Biernath's advice and try one of the DOS emulator programs to run JA. If I get a chance later this weekend I'll try installing JA and see what happens.

You could also try running the game in 'Compatibility Mode' (right-click on the exe file, look under the properties screen for the 'compatibility' tab. Check the box that allows you to run it under compatibility for another version of MS Windows and try it as Windows 95. Maybe try running under different colour depths by changing the options on that tab as well.

What worked for me in Win95:

Also involves file properties of .exe-files the game uses.
(e.g. ja.exe, click right-mouse-button on the file, in the win-explorer)

There's a line: working(/starting?) directory. This could be blank or contain a directory-name that is wrong.
Entering the proper (where you installed) directory here might help your program find it's files.

Under the properties tab you can also set memory-uhm-thingiez (ems, xms etc.) some games require specified types of memory.

And there's the setup-for-sound if this is set to play on a non-existing-device that might cause trouble.

Another thing I 'discovered per accident' was where a game will run perfect when Windows is booted in safe-mode, this happened with BattleIsleII.
