If you have ADSL choose one of the lower 2 public servers. Keep away from the personalized top 2 servers. They have problems.
Transfer is typically a solid unbroken 50 - 52K a second. Yes thats 13 minutes for the entire 39 megs.
500bits ... are you kidding? Even a modem usually gives a solid 5 - 8K a second from File Planet. Something going wrong at your end Linx.

Yep, download took about 15 minutes here as well (DSL). So it isn't a Fileplanet problem.

please, someone point me to the campaign's download page! all I found on JAG was some links to the update and the interview, but no link for the campaign itself...

thanks!

Look at the end of the interview with Becoming X that's posted in the news section on the front of both BP and JAG.
The complete campaign d/l (40 megs) is on JAG under UB -> downloads -> campaigns.

I didn't choose personal server, I chose the lower one (planet xfer4) of the public servers and it's very very slow. I've been downloading for about 5 hours now and it's at 27%. Multi-threading/resuming is not supported.

Me no like this. Me angry at ISP

Just played a few sectors on different levels and although I would call myself a JA 2 and UB veteran I think many sectors are much too hard.
Most sectors I've seen so far are really great!

Imho Becomming X has done a really good job!

Hey
I tested the campaign on experienced, although i changed the settings for novice and expert I didn't actually test these. There is very little difference between the difficulty settings, maybe about 5 enemies either way.

Too hard? Where are you in the campaign? I tried to maintain the air of non linear play but used difficulty to steer the player the way I want them to go. Some sectors weren't meant to be taken until better weapons are found or and others aren't meant to be taken at all.

Thanks for saying the stuff looks great, i appreciate that.

My main intention was to give some positive feedback, while others were still discussing download problems.

Maybe it's my fault and I have to change my tactics, but the hospital and the village in the south were really hard to take. All enemies seemed to be night-op experts equipped with UV-goggles. I think my weapons were quite competitive, but my mercs were killed or seriously injured before they could use them.

At night a merc with good hearing wearing an extended ear plus breaklights is a good tactical combination if you dont have UVG.

Fuzzi Q. I appreciate the feedback!

Sorry I didn't mean to sound defensive or anything.

Both those sectors are meant to be taken. I just wanted to make night ops more difficult as I find attacking at night too easy.

Anyway I hope u are finding the campaign "challenging" and not an excercise in frustration.

Hey X,
I love your maps... you did a outstanding job on your maps... I got most of the south part of the map done and I got the P90... thanks for putting it in there... The only thing I wish you had in there was a place to sell all those guns{150}... I made H8 sector my homebase... Ran out of medkit and I made a opps with fieldkits by throwing them away the trash can Over all the game so far is "GREAT"!!!! Side note: NEED 8000+ in the game... hehehe

so these files aren't downloadable anywhere else than fileplanet? i personally don't like fileplanet very much. one reason is that i can't resume my downloads unless i get the personal server (and i've understood that it isn't free?). i can't take those 20mb files in one run with my 56 horse powers. takes a lifetime

if possible, upload the files somewhere else. is it?

@ jarnoid: You may use a little tool called Download Accelerator Plus, it's available for free at www.speedbit.com. This tool worked fine for me and you can stop and resume the dl from fileplanet whenever you want.

@ Becoming X: Your campaign is really challenging, I have to admit that I had some frustrating moments, but all in all it's a very good campaign with some really good looking sectors.
Afair the AI of UB is much improved over the AI of original JA 2, maybe that caused my troubles at the beginning.

Hunter of Death: thanks for the praise. U raided the toilet factory killed poor Scotty and took his P90? Damn, Scotty just wanted to sell toilets. As far as selling guns... I couldn't include any real gun dealers for fear that they would sell you guys too much primo stuff and mess up my balancing. Med kits down south are sparse, but I randomized a lot of med kit drops, so you may be having some bad luck.

Fuzzi Q: Things are bound to get frustrating, just so long as you don't throw my campaign away in a moment of rage.

Question for both of you and anyone else who is playing my campaign.

Are you guys following the briefings and the game clues or are you doing your own thing? I'm just curious as to how you are finding the game clues, are they clear, do they provide you hints, provide motivation to proceed to a certain sector or for the most part are they glanced over?

one more question: Has anyone run into any RPC's yet? Just want to make sure that that stuff is working out.

I met Biggins (and some bloodcats) on a small island in the southwest and I once met John Kulba at the tourist resort. I got a message that my mercs discovered someone in the sector north to the sector with all these dartgunners, but no one was there.

Hey there, X.
Gotta say I'm incredibly satisfied with your maps so far (though I've only played five of them).

I met the Scotty guy, but he didn't have much to tell me so I decided to follow the storyline in stead (read the other team's files and I gotta say, I think somebody like T-Rex has a face more suitable for the story you gave to T-Dawg).

As far as I've played the game, I don't think it's too hard. Sure, when you walk into the first sector and it reads 20 enemies, you get a little taken aback, but it wasn't really that difficult.

Good work, anyway.

Hey Fuzzi Q and Khaine. Thanks for the feedback I just wanted to make sure that the NPCs and RPC's were showing up. I guess I'm pretty paranoid since I didn't get anyone to test it for me. Sounds like everything is ok.

About the mysterious "your mercs have noticed someone" messages. This happens every once and a while it doesn't necessarily mean you will find someone. Not exactly sure why that happens.

Scotty is a little less talkative than I would have liked, should have played with his hidden settings more, but he's not supposed to impart knowledge, he's just there to put a face to the gun dealers.

As for T Dawg getting T-Rex's face: T-Rex is too hardcore to be T-dawg, T-Dawg just thinks he's hardcore. He is the typical suburban white kid who has listened to too much hip hop.

Hey, Becoming X! I am playing your campaign, haven't gotten very far yet. I am trying to follow the clues. I have recovered documents 1 through 5, in correct order, so I guess I am doing OK. After Ninja school, am I supposed to go to that place, which is mentioned on the cup?

Of the RPCs I have so far recruited the remains of the Alpha team. Had some trouble recruiting T-Dawg. Aside: I always thought that since in UB you are not filling out the questionair, your mercs automatically get normal attitude. But it looks like I was wrong. I chose the big blonde guy with an earing for my custom, and I think he is unfriendly or aggressive or something. Because he can't recruit anyone. Before I always relied on my custom to do the talking, and as it happens my other mercs were lacking in the leadership department. I had to reload, edit T-Dawg/Dynamo's script to make it easier to recruit him, and then try again.

BTW, T-Dawg is pretty hilarious! And I like Muskrat too. Only shouldn't he be stealthy, if he is a trapper? Too bad I can't really use them as front-line mercs, but they do see some action in support roles.

P.S. About "squad noticed someone" messages: I think these "ghost" NPCs are left over from JA2. Although they are no longer on the map, ja25prof.dat still says that they are supposed to be there, and that triggers the message.

Snap you've checked game clues 1 through 5? Wow guess you're not finding the campaign too difficult at all.
After the Ninja School you're supposed to follow the next clue and try to hit that location, but you can deviate, you don't need to go directly to that location.
Did you try a bunch of different lines with T-Dawg? Cause you have to speak "friendly" to him and let him drone on for a while before he joins up. Muskrat just sort of falls into your lap.
Too bad niether merc is frontline quality but at least you haven't strapped them full of explosives and sent them on their way yet.

Oh no, I find it quite difficult indeed. I am playing on experienced, daytime only, like you suggested. I had to adjust my tactics for your campaign. For one thing, I can not wander into a sector with 4-5 mercs and hope to survive the initial onslaught. I have to use all the mercs I have, and that's where T-Dawg and Muskrat and even Maddog come into play. The reason I couldn't include them into my "elite" team was that they were too far behind when I found them. By that time custom was at level 7, and the rest (Ice, Blood, and Cougar) at level 6. I am trying to get Conrad and Iggy up to snuff though.

As for recruiting T-Dawg, I know how it is supposed to go (since he is just Dynamo in another incarnation), but it just didn't work. My custom must be too unsociable, and the rest had pretty low leadership (30 is required to hire).

Also got the 50cal sniper rifle off the sniper at the Airfield{old mine sector... The only thing is ran out of ammo for the P90 and 50cal... haven't pick up any of those NCP or RPC{don't know what is RPC?}... Also run into your tanks and run the hell out of there fast... NO LAW ~

I liked the D-day feel of the first map. Lost Razor to a land mine. Screwed around in the south a bit before reading the docs. Found Biggins and killed the toilet salesmen. Went north and found the sector full of dart gunners. Pretty funny. Half my team went down and the enemy charged, but they didnt have any real weapons to finish anyone off. Gumpy entered the hut and got stabbed to death. Now I'm in the town next to the data center. Current team is Ghost (Nite ops/stealth lvl 9), Numb (Cool, Haywire (6), Biggins (7), Fidel (5).

The maps are good. Having empty sectors to rest in means you dont have to retake the same map over and over. I like the gameplay better than any campaign so far. Night ops are much harder without goggles and tricked out weapons. Ive been using every grenade and breaklight I find. No Raul to ruin balance. Ammo and item balance is almost perfect except for medikits. Could use a few more guaranteed medikit drops.

I have a question, is there a transmitter anywhere? I need to bring in the rest of my team.

Becoming X,
I recently downloaded your campaign and think its great.. I do have one concern however, when looking over your maps. One of them (I forget which ) had 2 regular soldiers and 30 elite. The map called for 32 regulars at easy and 32 elite at experienced and difficult levels! I may be showing my ignorance but will this not cause the game to crash? or can the programme change thoes troops to a different class? I do like the campaign so please do not consider this a flame! I am trying to prevent a future crash before I get to this map!

It can and it will, even when you don't want that. (Read my other posts on this forum about this issue if you are planning on making your own maps.)

I must confess, I am about ready to give up. Things were just starting to look up, but then... I went into a sector, at daytime as always. Spread my mercs a little, and as it often happens in this campaign, the enemy engaged me almost instantly, before I even had a chance to put on makeup... er, camo. About a dozen enemies charged my positions - I was ready for that. What I didn't anticipate was mortars! They just destroyed me, and there was nothing I could do. My mercs got caught in the firefight on the very edge of the sector - they took the best cover they could find, but they didn't have anywhere to retreat. How do you guys deal with that?

Hey
Plop- from the sounds of it i went a little to sparse on medkits down south. As for the transmitter fix, if you find Muskrat he'll tell you where to go.

Snap- sounds like you've hit your snaping point (that was bad). Which map was it that you had trouble with? I know that in some of the Delco city maps the mercs tend to get jumped on quick. I hope you don't give up.

Alpro- an Aliens mod would be way to much work for me to handle. Gotta change the tilesets, and I don't know about the futuristic weapons. Though it would be cool to have hicks and all those guys around. Anyway I am working on another project right now.

Great campaign but I have a couple of questions... I have about half of the levels complete in SG now, all in the north, and have retrieved the video tape. I found Betty Fung (from JA2UB) and everytime I try to buy from her the game locks up with the watch curser. Any sugestions? Also, If I'm not supposed to talk to her, where do I get a transmitter? I have over $85k and no where to spend it. I have plenty of weapons (I steal when I find one I like)and ammo but would also like to bring in a merc that I couldn't affort when I left- Lynx. Another problem is that I can't get any of the basements to work. The game goes to the basement screen and crashes with a runtime error. The map files are there so it should work... Any help here is appreciated.

For those playing who don't have very good weapons- try stealing. I have modified three 50s, three VALs, four G11s, and dozens of P90s, RPKs, Minimis, and PSGs and I am only halfway through the campaign.

Hey durty dan
When u speak to Betty Fung does she speak at all? Also have u noticed tex standing next to the toilet? Tex will try to make his way into Fung's shop and if your mercs are blocking the doorways he can't make it in and the game will load and load and load. If she isn't speaking to you at all, then I'm not sure whats up.

Never had any of the basement problems that you're having. Do you have the newest patch for JA2:UB cause I thought there were some problems early on about user created basement levels not working that got fixed.

Let me know whats up.

Anyone else having these probs?

DirtyDan: patch your game (download the patch from Sirtech's site).

About steeling weapons: this is one of the things you obviously didn't anticipate. You would have been wise in following the principle "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" I completed only a small part of the game, but already I have stolen a few good weapons and attachments that probably were never intended to fall into my hands.

About that nasty mortar situation: it occured right after I left the Ninja School and headed east. (That one was funny, by the way, but really easy at daytime. Like shooting fish in a barrel.) I noticed that in most of your maps there are a dozen or more "on call" enemies that will charge you as soon as your presence is revealed. This makes the start of the battle quite difficult, especially since most of the time there are enemies close to your point of insertion. I conquered that sector on second attempt, with massive bloodloss - but only through dumb luck: for some reason mortar shells fell way off. Otherwise I would've been toast.

Now I am at a sector that rather reminds me "gunrunners" in DL. I am not sure what to do: I know I can probably take them on if I try hard. But then I will have all that powerful weaponry at my disposal - is that what you intended?

You thieving bastards!
I actually started out putting all the weapons in the enemies wrong hand (by accident), then I read a post somewhere about someone being bitter about not being able to steal weapons so decided to put the guns in the correct hand. I still didn't expect theft on what sounds like such a large scale. Good thing you can't steal armour.

About mortars missing... sometimes if there is a cliff graphic in the map it messes up mortar and law accuracy. There is one map in my campaign that is a great example of this.

The "gunrunners" sector I'm assuming is Tony's place. The anwser is "yes by all means grease those guys and take their weapons".

One question Snap... did the transmitter fix work for you? Or are you having the same trouble the Durty D has been having?

Thanks for your feedback

Hey, X!
I lost touch with the clues when I couldn't find the Alpha team (where are they, anyway?) so I decided to just finish every map going from top to bottom.

My question is:
Is there no way to get back from the 'Col's hideaway'?
I have no idea who he is or where he is, but I know this Heraldo (or something) won't talk to me. He only tells me about some tape.

Snap and Becoming X- Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten to patch my game when I reinstalled a couple of weeks ago.

Khaine- try the broken looking helocopter in the COL's hideout- it should get you back to the pad. I couldn't get any plans from him either, just killed him after a while and found three seemingly useless tapes about Delco.

X- I'll try talking to Betty again and this time be more patient letting Tex come in. She talks to me with the same dialogue referring to the bloodcats in UB and offering more sales when I kill them.

Thanks all for the tips

DD

Hey,
The colonel should take you for a walk outside and then when you grease him he should drop the plans. That is a little disturbing as that is a rather big part of the "plot". I don't know who heraldo is? What tapes? What's going on?

Alpha should be found after you find the clue in the data center. However they only show up after 8:00am in the morning (they hide for the night) i tried to fix that by giving them orders to never leave the sector but it didn't work.

DD is right about using the crashed chopper to exit. Sorry should have made the exit point more obvious.

Hey again,
well I figured out why Harland (heraldo?) doesn't drop anything. I guess I neglected to check the box next to the game clue, so he doesn't drop it. I can't get into my sight to upload an update, but you can fix it yourself if you've got proedit, just fire that baby up, Scroll to Harland, and edit his items. Just put a check next to "security report" so that he drops it. However for this change to take effect you'll have to restart the game so I'll just give you the password for the game clue...

This is for uploaded doc 8
Password is: Secureit

ARRRGGGHHH Sorry about that.

Ok I've updated my site, download update.zip and itmdsc.zip again to be completely up to date.

I'm having some infinite stopwatch lockups too. Happened in several sectors while in combat, enemy starts their turn and never finishes.

I know how Snap feels. After getting TDawg and Muskrat I took one of the other choppers at the helipad to N13: Wilderness. Theres about 12 enemies on call. I got wiped out about 10 times there. Every round they launch 2 grenades from unseen positions and throw 2 or 3 more. I dont have a prayer. I have my own grenade launcher but can only get off 1 shot before succumbing to the barrage.

Hey X,

You traitor! You tell me to go ahead and waste the "gunrunners" in F15, but you don't tell me that they are all level 8-9! None can do - my custom is at level 8, and the rest are less experienced. Well, I could rig the place with lotsa explosives, but I don't like this style.

BTW, the reason I had to fire up the editor is that when I engaged "gunrunners" in E15, to my surprise only about half of them responded. Apparently this is because they weren't all in the same group. I fixed this problem for you - you can download the corrected map here:

e15.zip

I wasn't sure where to go next, so I went further east and found two choppers. They lead me to two isolated sectors, neither of which seems to have a way back? Also in one of the sectors (the one with rebels) I found a creature organ - was that supposed to be a document?

Hey
CaiN follow the game clues and they should lead you to Alpha (other RPC's).

Snap- I remember that only half of those guys would fight, I don't know why i never fixed it. Thanks for the fix.

The way back from the two isolated sectors is back at the heli. I know it looks destroyed but amazingly you can use it to teleport back to the helipad. At least I hope you can unless I've messed that up too. I made the exit grid too small probably but it's there.

The only creature organ i put in the game i thought was in the junkyard. And it's decription should read "burnt doc".

I hope you've been reading this thread, I messed up with Harland he should drop a game clue "security report" but instead when he bites it he holds on to it like it was gold. So I posted the password here. Snap you'll probably just use some editor to read my item descriptions and then hack the game to put the end sector a little closer (too much walking is no fun for mercs)

I put up a fix, but you have to make the change using proedit, and u have to restart to implement those changes right?

Anyway glad to hear you haven't given up yet, let me know what the creature organ said and if you have a burnt doc in your item descriptions. I'm sure it's included... i think, and i hope.

@Snap
Taking out those gunrunners is easy. Go to the NE room and close the door. Place your mercs in a crouched position along the wall, facing the door. Now fire shots in realtime. You should be able to get off about four or five shots before combat starts (just shoot fast). From there on it's a cakewalk.

No, I'll leave them alone. Too much firepower too early in the game. Nothing to look for in the future. Besides it's all too easy to get some of your mercs killed in this situation - it all depends on luck.

X: in the rebel base, there was just a creature organ, with its original description. I tried going back through the heli but it doesn't seem to work. Anyway, I think I strayed too far off, I'll go south to G13 instead.
