mate, we can't adapt Gaston's samples to Simon for instance, since they both are completely different RPCs, who can easily co-exist even in the same squad. that would look (and sound) non-professional and amateur, at least Wink

in fact, there is no prob to create a .doc w/ rough translation of ingame e-mails and other gameplay hints, like a guide-to-hire for the new characters.
to tell you the truth - i had the same prob while testing the MOD for the first time; i didn't have the russian ver of the game then, and the first thing to do after the crash-landing was - as usual - to wack the pilot. guess what happened - the moment i punched him, that loco pulled out his gun and chopped me to pieces Wink i really feel for ya, guys Smile

but, like i said before - the MOD's creation took so long that we simply cannot afford ourselves to release halfa-job. throwing in a .doc w/ hints and walkthroughs,instead of full-scale translation, will be exactly doing a halfa-job. and we DO care 'bout our reputation.

so, we really count on you guys to help us create something we plain cannot. like authentic audiosamples Smile

SHADY JOB ENGLISH GUIDE - SPOILERS

Intro

I thought if we all kicked in, we can unravel a lot of this. Post what you've discovered (additions and corrections) and I'll edit to reflect.

Fixes

Delete all NOMAP files in folder DATA\CAMPAIGNS\SJ.

Apply Roman's patch. Fixes various things. See his post of 29/9/04.

Integrated Weapon attachments

* MAC10 - suppressor
* most sniper rifles - sniper scope
* Steyr HBar - scope and bipod

Combinables

* broken collimator + optic unit = collimator which replaces rod and spring. Goes on most weapons except LMGs
* armour + webbing = armour with pouches. Increases armour rating and allows ceramic plates (if patched), gas mask and first aid kit to be worn in armour
* Xray device, can & string - no change
* extenders - disabled

Sectors/NPCs

C8 - male NPC. Checks you about alarm signal in from D8.
C9 - male NPC. Give passport and get letter, $200 and info.
C10 - female NPC. Gives info re the manager NPC in C8.
D8 - 2 male NPC - One is guard and attacks on sight. Other is manager. Threaten him and he'll give you disket. NPCs in Sersin C8, C9 & C10 will like that.
E10 - 2 male NPCs. One in north is a junk dealer, like Jake. One in bar in west function unknown. Items on ground like Estoni junkyard.
G11 - 4 NPCs in a building reminiscent of Shady Lady. Male behind counter gives you a key to rear rooms if you give him cash. Wants it back after your visit.If you give him (guy behind counter) golf clubs, the NPC blocking the door to the back rooms moves aside (but blocks the front door). In the back rooms are male and female hooker NPCs (1 each). They give info and "other services".
G12 - Recruitable NPC (Simon)in north. Talk to him or old man in centre of sector and a name appears over his head.
H7 - start sector. Pilot recruitable.
H9 - male NPC. Function unknown.
H11 - male NPC. Function unknown.
I10 - male NPC. Police chief. Thinks barman in adjacent sector I11 is spy for Carradine and will give info if you kill him.
I11 - male NPC in bar. Female NPC on street corner outside bar. Both will give info if you kill police chief in I10, who they think is a spy for Carradine.
I13 - male and female NPC outside hut. Talk several times and give cash to female and be shown inside mine. Inside is recruitable female NPC. Specifically, talk friendly to male 4 times, talk friendly to male 2 more times, talk friendly to female 2 times, talk direct to female 1 time, then say yes when she asks for $100.
K7 - female NPC. Function unknown.
K10 - building has unpickable lock and indestructible door and walls. Key obtained in sector N9. Inside room is stairs to tunnel. After several tunnel sectors, you end up on 2nd most easterly island M15(?). Get ready for a tough fight. There's another staircase down on the island, which leads down to a multilevel underground complex and the end game.
L10 - 2 male NPCs. One blocks door of main building. Give him cigars from L11 and he'll move aside. Other is a weapons dealer.
M5 - (prison). Male and female NPC. Female is prisoner in sell and wants to be escorted somewhere. Male is warden and attacks if you talk to him.
N9 - female NPC. Give her letter and $200 and she'll give you key for K10 door.
N12 (?) - mine entrance on island (you need to swim for it leads to an underground room, with stairs up to M10.
O5 - 3 male NPCs. 2 in street seem to give info. 1 in building (clinic?) attacks if you go in back room. In back room are booster and regen needles. Talk with dealer, then talk with man in street and he will escort you to back room without alarm.

It is. Just use sound recorder in windows. Make sure you've applied the settings they wanted (hz & bit)

mate, i really hate to spoil it for ya, but i'd wait another month if i was you Smile lemme finish the translation so you wont b wandering in the dark as u do now.

anyways, i'd like to clear the picture a bit :

1. u can indeed find 2 collimator parts at the junkyard sector (the one is a broken optic and the other is a broken collimator,; u can get 'em combined for a functioning collimator which acts like the original rod&spring)

2. LMGs mostly non-upgradable since they r already an uber-weapon (large clip and low AP burst-cost, 5-6 shots per burst). i hope our guys will fix that in a next upcoming patch, cuz right now RPK, PKM and HBAR are weapons of choice, virtually beating 9 outta 10 ARs in the MOD. creating LMGs compatible w/ collimators and las-pointers would make it a cheat-in-law Wink

3. armours are upgradable w/ vests, thus making it possible to place medkits and other groovies in the "pouches". be aware though - ceramic plates can b placed in the armor only BEFORE applyin the vest on it. once the vest is combined w/ the armour, no ceramics can b added. this is a subject to fix, but right now this is the way it is.

@ Lupus. Thanks, but I'm too obsessive to stop a mod once I've started. Also, its sort of realistic to have language difficulties if you're operating covert in a foreign country. Then again, I do have Ivan and Igor along for the mission.

That said, it's a good enough mod to play again and again, so I'll give the english version a try too when it's out.

Re the weapons, I agree about the LMGs. I like the mod overall, but the high damage values are a problem IMO. The problem with such high damage values, especially with critical hits, is that most of the weapons do more damage than you really need and lose their individuality. One of the appeals of vanilla JA2 was that weapon chices really matter, eg do I go for the extra damage of the HK21 (despite its weight and high AP cost) or FN FAL (despite its few bullets per burst) or do I go for a C7 for its low AP cost and many bullets per burst (despite its lower damage) or do I go for a sniper rifle for its accuaracy and damage (despite its lack of burst fire). The guns here are all so powerful that it really doesn't matter what you decide to use. I'm using a mix of Steyr HBars, G3A3s and FN FALs - the last 2 with Talons, but could have finished easily with the M4s, the first of which I picked up in the start sector.

You've confused sectors G12 (the old farm) where Simon can be found and E10 (the junkyard) where you can obtain some useful things.

L10. The guard at the door of the arms dealer's building gives you a quest to bring him cigars from sector L11. Then he'll let you pass. I'm not sure but the police chief in I10 semms to give you a recomendation letter to the arms dealer if you kill the barman in I11.

I10,I11 The police chief and the barman accuse each other of being a spy of Carradine (the chief evil boss Smile ) If you kill the police chief then the barman and the hooker will tell you some useful information. Whom to kill is for you to choose but you can't understand any information so far Wink

Thanks for the hints Roman, I finally got past the two (took some trial and error :rolleyes: )and could add Benny to my team, now I'm off to pursue Simon to join too.
Lupus, regarding Gaston's voice..... Gaston and Sergej Gromov have the same voice in my game, I think it's one of the IMP's voices. Gaston's french accect voice is greatly missed :bawling:

About sector I13, i tried talking to the man and woman, they start a conversation with eachother, i press "friendly" a couple of times and offered her money. Then she says something, probably I don't need it or something and she doesn't accept the money i offer her. I entered the cave anyways but it's empty as expected. Any tips? I really want to have another sniper on my team!

I think leadership doesn't matter. AFAIR first you should talk to the guy Дружески & Прямо (friendly & direct) until he answers only the same short reply. I think you'll be able to recognize this moment. Then you should talk to the girl also Дружески & Прямо. At first she answers only with short interjections like "well", "what's up" and so on. Only after some number of attempts she begins to tell a lot more. Then a dialogue box appears and after you agree to pay her 100$ she'll show you into the mine. You'll find yourself in the alternative underground sector where Benny waits for you. IMHO the authors of SJ overcomplicated this moment. I think they'd better have thought out something less abstruse.

Re: L10 I think that guard outside the arms dealer quit smoking as he seem to be offended with thatever I say and he don't accept my cigars. I use Gus (83) so leadership shouldn't be a problem. Thanks Neyros, thought I tried all combinations but obviously not that one.

I've come across a few bugged sectors.

M5 & island at end of tunnel from L10. Items dropped to ground appear greyed out in sector inventory and appear in radar map when cursor run over item in sector inventory, but disappear from tactical map and can't be picked up. I lost 2 quest items and some nice weapons this way.

2nd or 3rd tunnel sector after entering tunnel from L10. If you go to sector inventory, the one for a different sector (M10) opens and you can't get out of that screen except by shutting down and reloading.

Sound loops. If you leave the game running but inactive, eg leave it on while you have dinner, you come back to find the sound looping like a broken record.

Not enough to pevent to game being enjoyable, but thought you'd want to know.

tnx mate, though the majority of those bugs had already been discovered thru testing (including pre-alpha and beta). all of those major bugs, such as unpickable items in several sectors and tele-to-nowhere are targetted for fixing already.

relating the sound looping phenomenon - it is a mistery. since you're the 1st one to ever come across it...
MAY BE - and this is my wildest guess - that depends on version's compability (???)

I haven't played wildfire, but you must expect severe casualties or lots of reloads if you have auto weapons that do 40+ damage, sniper rifles that do 50+ damage and critical hits hacked in. The Barrett (the UB version - the one in this mod is scary) is a popgun compared to most weapons in this mod. It's a fun mod and variety is a wonderful thing, but get used to reloading.

The APCs aren't hard when you get used to them. At first I tried to fight them like tanks, ie sneak up and use LAWS. Then I realised that they behave like bugs and even bleed when you shoot them (so I assume they're converted bugs) and discovered that they're actually quite fragile. I killed one with a single frag grenade (which are very powerful in this mod) and others with a single burst. Their weapon is deadly if it hits, but inaccurate at long range and useless if you're on a roof. They're dangerous at night, because they can see (smell?) much further than you (that applied even to my NO expert IMP with UV goggles and camo!), but that's where the Xray detector and mortar work wonders. I found more mortar shells than I could use, so used them liberally against APCs.

Mortars and MG's are indeed THE way to beat APC's. IF you can sneak up to them in the first place to get their position...

Inaccuracy of their MRLS is offset by it's lethality in my opinion.

Absolutely. you're screwed if one of them sees you before you see it, unless you're on a roof. I invariably lost 1 - 3 mercs to a single missile volley when that happened (reloaded of course)

However, you don't need to sneak up if you have an X ray detector. They tended to be sitting in the gates of bases, which I always assault at night, so I started my base assaults with a mortar barrage at any red dots in the vicinity of gates. The ones in the prison gave me a shock, but I was already inside and on the roof when I encountered them.

This reminds me of something to suggest to the white hat brigade - the AI won't use mortars and LAWS and grenades don't work against you if you're on a roof - or is that only certain versions)

yeah, you got it right - original APCs were bug-based. however, it came clear that this should be changed ASAP, since the "smelling from far away" ability plus low AP cost for MRLS makes them a way too monstrous. this is then robot-based APCs started to appear. unfortunately, something went wrong in the final assembling, and in the majority of SJ sectors you still encounter bug-based APCs. that includes everything mentioned here, plus bug-related comments from mercs Wink

btw, bug-based APCs die nicely of mustard gas intoxication. and since expansive ammo causes them to lose stamina, you can easily get an APC to an "unconsious" condition using even blue-ammo'ed pistols Smile

Don't take me to be criticising the APCs. They are a great idea and when you've played a lot of JA2 and think you know everything, it's very refreshing to get a nasty surprise.

i don't Smile but i do realize our APCs - at this moment at least - are not exactly what we expected them to be. so, like i said, there is a place for changes and improvement...
