 I can't believe I'm stumped at the first obstacle here. It's a great mod, but I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Plot-related spoilers follow for informational and problem-solving purposes.

I cannot access the airport from the first city. That means I can't get to FB George where the commander wants a report. Already returned Budda, have radio. Haven't found any item other than the one at Betty's and that password doesn't seem to work on zipped1.doc in the readme nor on any of the individual map zips. Is this a user error on my part? Have I failed to enter the password correctly? Should it be all caps, initial caps or what? Have I tried to enter it on the wrong file? Have I missed a different item which should have the password? I blew away some VC in the river - one went unconscious from a couple of shotgun blasts and when he passed out I think he drowned. But I'm playing on experienced, tons of guns so if there's a clue, it should drop. Maybe I just haven't hit the right sopt yet. Any help welcome, i.e. where's the clue, enter the password in allcaps for "x" file, etc. Thanks in advance.

It's been a while, so I'm not 100% sure, but enter all passwords entirely in lowercase.

The JA2 item description text is an all-caps font, but the real capital letters are slightly larger.

Hope this helps,
Vurt

***** SPOILER *****

First, speak to the mayor of Tay Nihn City. He'll give you a quest to go on. That will lead to a password for Dossier 2. My understanding is that is actually works on Dossier 1. It's a name. Capitalize the first letter as I recall.

Later, you will encounter some very nasty black-shirted VC in J15. Build up your party a bit before going there, because they're pretty tough. One of them will be carrying a map that will give you another password to a file located in the campaign folder of JA2:UB. It will give you access to G11, which will open up the way to more adventure in the northern part of the map.

The dossier folder is in the "read me" folder, as I recall.

You don't need any passwords to get into the Iron Triangle/FB George. Just take the upper chopper in the southern sector of Tay Ninh base.

I've got the 'medicine' quest from the mayor. I have seen the password for dossier1 first time I played but after reload I have never seen it again. Would anyone remind me where the password is? history?, inventory?

Cheers!

Oh Danny Boy,

The password for dossier 1 is in an info package that Trang gives you in Tah Ning. He gives you the info packet in exchange for an item known as a "medicare packet or package." This package is an unique item (not the peice of gear that you wear in place of a vest that holds C-rats and first aid kits) found in a crate in the Southwestern sectors of the Iron Triangle (big lower area which includes firebase George and Judy). This crate is underground in one of the furthest SW sectors, due West of the Arclight (B52 raid) area. :crossbones:

There is another item of interest, a very little item that sparks, that you might find and return to it's owner as well. This item is not required to move on with the storyline, however, you might like the reward!

When you do find the password, note that you must type it in first letter capitalized, the rest lower case.

There is another password found on a video called Ninja Training school or something. kungfusomething or another is the password given. This item is a carry over from a different MOD. Ignore it.

Good luck,

I also reported to Innis after taking FB George, and nothing changed as well. I wasn't sure if I did something wrong, but when I came back to FB George later the base had been reinforced and I believe Lt. Stone said something about how the FB G. Report had been sent or something to that effect. The first time I talked to him, he talked about his old C.O. at FB George. The next time (at least a day later) he mentions the report. I haven't gotten the second password yet for G11, so I don't know if Innis's text changes after that, but I don't think it has changed at all after the report, after completing the Medical Supply quest, and after returning the sparky object to that one guy. (is that being non-specific enough to slip past the *spoiler* sensors?) :digit: :rulez:

Hey Guys, I'm not sure 'bout this one, 'coz it did not get clear in your posts. You don't have to take FB George but to get the report from there and get the report (item) back to Innes.
The problem here is that the VC will destroy it as soon as the know that you're there. So being silent is the key in this one.

In reward you'll get a permission for a weapon, that could be used to get a nice one from the chief at Tay Ninh.

No. No real problem for the story line. With the quest you would've got a weapon (the silent carabine). You can of course play without. Don't really think it is worth the effort of replaying, well depends on your taste in weapons of course.

Enjoy the further game.

Well, kinda. The Silent Carabine delivers 30 damage with a range of 30. Rate of fire is 9, a bit high of course, no burst. Well enough for two shots a turn, that will mostly kill a enemy.

***SPOILER***

FB Judy

This is a real meat grinder. 32 VC and NVA regulars are waiting for you here. The Grunts get wiped out and over run. The enemy has some wicked sounding weapon that shoots naplam like explosives and it will reek havoc on you and the grunts.

I lost MD, Taylor, and Barry. Barry went up in a ball of flame. Finally cleared away enough enemy to jump on board the helicopter and bugged out.

Poor LT. Stone...I tried to recruit him but all he said was he as leaking. Guess the VC are having a party with him now.

Got back to Tay and turned in the FB George log. Col. Innis gave me a deed that allows for you to requisite weapons from any base commander. I was disappointed because I had lost three good men getting that report and bring it back.

On my way to the golden budda. After spending a few days in the Iron Triangle, I can see that radio will come in real handy.

"I am alerted to the suspicious sounds around me."

Oh, FB Judy isn't _that_ bad, really Smile The last time around I was amazed to see that the AIs used their 'rockets' to break through 5 consecutive sandbag barriers on the northern side and then toasted the US boys inside. But the campaign isn't meant to be so hard as to make losing men inevitable, though rushing in without backup is very likely to produce some casualties. The militia men are expendable, in fact it's better to have them all killed to get their equipment :diabolical: Lt. Stone will be needed once more to exchange a certain perk for something very useful.

To summarize the tactics for SOG'69, you need to find ways to make the enemies run into the machineguns' corridors of fire. The LMGs can be very powerful, but they depend on visual contact and are too bulky to act as real assault rifles. Getting an interrupt with the machinegun all set up usually means one enemy less around. I personally use barrel extenders on machineguns, every bit helps. During the Iron Triangle there aren't any real assault rifles around, and that means the common grunt is basically too weak to be safe from harm even against a single enemy when on his own, and that is by design. Long range support with some snipers and grenadiers is the key when dealing with larger packs. The teamwork aspect is playing out so strong because it was a stated design goal not to have those dominating superguns that fire large bursts, use scopes for sniping and are just as handy as a pistol. So in the basic setup there are two or three LMGs covering the hot area, backed up by any number of snipers while a happy scout/grenadier combo is trying to stir up Vietcongs and then get the hell out alive.

Worth a note, the Molotov cocktails are the local specialty, they are very unstable and a lot of enemies carry them. A single minigrenade (far from useless) is often enough to see the badguy do the dance of fire.

No Judy is not so bad....
I liked that battle of Hammburger hill - everybody wants to rule this useless hill Razz
But fighting with militia is pretty long and boring = i cant stand how stupid they are acting.. wha ind of movements they are doing... "Very bad" ;]]
It lasts 2 more time to clear the sector with militia - yeah i enjoy theur weaponz too but this suckers are sometimes picking equipment from dead friendz instead of quiet dying. To tell the truth sometimes i even try to heal them - becouse of the pointz to MED ;]] but mostsly i prefer to shoot them with my enemies..... they are exactly corrupted like SV guyz.... Very Happy

Following was posted in Nov. in another post here.
Hope it is helpful.

In this mod, there are many sectors in which cooperation between mercs and militias
is important. For example, in L12, FB Judy, the first time I played, I used mercs to
form a second front at south of the sector, it failed, at the end, only 5 militias
(besides Lt. Stone) survived.
When I saw that militias formed very tight group and be bombed by RPG-7, I felt very bad.
***Following may be spoiler ***
Then I found out the purpose of the four switches, and though I should use them.
For my second run, I let all mercs to run into the base and use the four switches ASAP.
Between the two lighted areas, there is a gap, I used one break-light to seal it.
With some luck, this time only four militias died. The major reason for this low casualty is that the lighted area keeps enemy far away and they can not use RPG-7.
After this sector, I pay more attention to use break-light to expose enemy and let militias to kill them.

I am in day 30 of SOG and I have added Gasket, Razor, Gumpy, and Numb to my SOG Team giving me 12 mercs. I have gone back to the Iron Triangle with resupply and currently located at the Nok Tan(?) village. We just found a cache of weapons and money after blasting a ton of blood cats.

I have yet to get the quest from Tran even though I have gone back to him on various occasions. I am thinking he has something important locked in some of those roll top desk, but I really did not want to break into them yet.

I also journeyed by to FB Judy and although I got a "Enemy in Sector" warning and screen loading I could not find the 9 enemy soldiers anywhere. I circled the camp with a six man fire team with Bull waiting patiently to call in fire support. I did not know abou the switches....hope I did not blow them up the first time in when I was throwing law rockets and grenades at the enemy.

LT. Stone was very much alive and his grunts were back to full strenght. The only problem is when I revert back to the map screen I see the flashing red square surrounding FB Judy sector.

"That guy won't be shopping for hats any time soon."

Hey Dude,
Regarding Trang's quest, he doesn't phrase it so simply as to say "Hey Dude, I need this or that." He says basically that his village is very poor and they are in desperate need of food and medical supplies. Something akin to that, at least. Before I got lost in the Iron Triangle, I actually tried to bring him med kits and C-Rats, but he didn't want them, so I thought F-it, and figured he was just in there for atmosphere. Only later did I realize it was actually a quest.
Just as with Hannigan. He didn't say what he wanted. I tried to give him cash, SOG towel and other weird stuff but the game just crashed. I certainly didn't want to steal the golden Buddha and give it to a slime like Hannigan, cuz' in the description of the Buddha it says how it is the property of the people, symbol of hope, or whatever challace of chance type thing. Thus, only in the forums did I realize that demoralizing the civilians by stealing from their church was a good thing. :luckystrike:

Day 40 found my intrepid SOG team back at FB Judy where we cleared out the remaining VC sappers lurking in the area. We had just come off a LRRP "Lurp" where we had taken out a couple of large groups of Charlie. Low on ammo, and in bad need of some R and R we headed back to FB Judy.

The LT sent out Sarge, Cougar, Gumpy, and Numb back to TAY Ninh for supplies while the reminding SOG team members rested, trained, and repaired equipment.

Later when Sarge got back he told us he had Cougar kick in Tran's desk and take the money. They packed in alot more supplies for us to take back into the boonies also.

The weird thing is when I went to hire more mercs I kept getting derogatory remarks from them regarding my leadership abilities. Now I know I lost Barry, and MD back around day 11 or so, but why the AIM mercs are still resentful is beyond me. So I finally gave up and say "Forget it, don't mean nuthin."

"Don't get off the boat, unless you intend to go all the way."

Yeah Thorn,
I dig. After I accidentally initiated the events that led to Spooky killing off all the non-combatants, Barry, MD, and I think, Sidney, said they wanted a leader with courage or something like that. I have to wonder what the actual trigger is that sets some of the AIM mercs against you... hmm....

Day 50- Vietnam, Republic of. My SOG team is back at LZ Astro recovering from a gnarly little firefight we had with Victor Charles the day before along a supply road that he seems to be in love with. There are so many bodies littering the ground back there you have to wear your SOG towel over your nose to cover the stench.

Since Day 40 our orders had changed. Seems the kiwis believed we were mucking about at night too much and missing important intel so they sent us back up north to Tay Ninh for some more training and sent us humping off into indian country like regular grunts. We were told to keep an eye out for tunnel complexes while we cleaned up some leftover Cong that were acting as if they still owned the sector. Our sweep took us all the way back to where we first landed in country. Resistence was light and on the way back to base two FNGs, thats new guys, join us. Some big tough dude named, Grizzly, who I was glad to let pack the M-60 awhile and another named, Red that knows all about things that go boom. We didn't find any tunnels, so after a brief rest at the FB they choppered us back into the Iron Triangle. Some of the fellers call it the "IT". Personally, I call it the shhhh "IT" because that's what it smells like to me. Suppose it most be all those dead bodies laying around in the 110 degree heat.

Right off, LT makes use conduct a force recon back to Ben Suc. Pretty appropriate name if you ask me. Seems LT thought he remember that was the place where we find those tunnel entrances before. But all we found were some villagers and a VC sewing factory. We had a big fight on the road there and on the way back to LZ Astro.

Still no tunnels. Gumpy said the LT should have marked them on his map. I told Gumpy I didn't think the LT knows how to read a map.

Off to chow now. Beans and Muthas. Yum.

"I savor my victory once again."

If you suspect that there's a tunnel entrance, load the map into the editor and right-click on the exit grid button. It will take you right there if one is present. Not sure if this is the most ergonomic solution though, but what can you do, those VCs keep their secret tracks hidden Wink

Dr. Quack

I appreciate the advice and following my adventures. I have a tunnel entrance in N 11 Tinh Village. It's a fire place in one of the huts. I just tried entering it again just now and got the same "Run time error". "Map cannot Load" "Press ESC to exit" which shuts down the game.

Now maybe this is not a tunnel entrance, maybe it is. I have reached the point where I don't care. The mod is fine playing I love it, especially Spooky..."That Spooky is a maniac, but he is real good." Like Ruiz says. I also enjoyed the Tour of Duty characters immensely.

But as for all the intrique and cloak and dagger stuff with the dossiers and false tunnels(?} I sorta have lost my patience.

I am gonna keep playing and now have a new target of seeing if I can take my team to the end of their "Tour of Duty" and then probably start a new JA2 campaign with the Gold pack I got. Unless, either UC or JA3 comes out before then.

Well, I have no idea whatsoever why the tunnels won't load for you, but there are some nice things down there. If you've tried reinstalling UB, patching to english 1.01, installing SOG'69 and the patch (in this order), and it still doesn't work I'll be clueless. If you back up your savegames this procedure is safe to try.

Hey Vert,
I'm playing my way through again as well. This time, I messed up early on and stole the cash from Trang and I think that messed up my chances of getting his quest AND the request from Col. Innis for the FB George report! I'm still hitting the Traingle in hopes that my chances weren't missed or else I'm going to have to track Weapon X down and have him give me a time machine to replace all those hours I lost cuz' I stole some cash to buy mercenaries to defend Trang's wussy ass! :luckystrike:

Good luck,

Well I am in like Day 68. I found the map with the G-11 password and went in and opened the file. When I returned to the game all the item descriptions are missing. If I right click something I don't get any descriptions at all.

I also was trying to find the way into G-11. The helicopters in Tay Ninh take me back to the Iron triangle.

I have used that opportunity to pick up some items we left behind on previous missions.

The tank scenario was fun...I enjoyed it alot. I liked shooting enemy soldiers while they are swimming in the water...hehehehe.

Now why aren't my descriptions showing up? I think I must have found every bug in the game.

Hiya Sidetrack!

Thanks for the hints! As for stealing Trang's cash screwing things up, I'm not so sure. My larcenous mercs cleaned up that sector, but Innis still gave me the special request form. I've noticed that a lot of NPC's require that you talk to them with someone with fairly high leadership, a skill in short supply in most circles. I'm hoping that even though Trang won't give me the time of day, all will be well when I hand over the package. If not, it's back to myweapons.txt file for the password we go...

As for the Stoner, I just wanted to see if it was worth the trouble of hunting for it. My first game I found the Browning, and gave it to Ivan to test it out. Didn't really use it all that much until I came to a sector where all the baddies were on an island with some pillars and such around it. Set up a nice crossfire and away I went. In any case, at one point I had Ivan prone on the ground and told him to spray a greyshirt who had just poked his head from around a pillar. Well, only one of the burst hit, severely wounding the target. Some of the rest of the bullets found their homes in two relatively unwounded redshirts, however, killing them. It was somewhat reminiscent of watering the lawn. From that moment on, I think I was totally sold on that fine piece of craftsmanship! Very Happy

But I'd like to see just how the Stoner compares.

Cheers,
Vurt

I got alot of the special weapons. My spelling of them might not be right because since my descriptions have crashed on me I can't go back to check spelling. But here is a list.

Stoner
M-60
Owens
Chennault
Silent Carbine
Sterling
BARs (2)
CAR-15 (3) Which Cougar cannot shoot for crap.
Carbine like the paratroopers carried in WW2
P-34
those shoulder fired rockets we use to call RPG's or P-40s
Carbines- old Garands
Some bad looking light to heavy machine gun I got later on at the Tank scenario I believe, holds a hundred rounds.

The thing I found about all the light to medium machine guns is they tend to be less accurate although they have a longer range. It's cool to fire them on full auto, but not very effective although most of my bigger mercs and mercs supposely with heavy weapons skills are carrying them, I am still getting mediocare results. That could be due to their marksmanship scores ranging between 75-85.

Got some old bolt action long range sniper rifle that is cool, but eats up action points to use.

Sidetrack: I went back and reinstalled just SOG and the patch, but that didn't work. You are probably right that I will have to re-do everything. I just don't want to run the risk of losing my game since I am so far along now.

I found that you don't want to wound civilians and you don't want to lose battles or retreat out of sectors where their are enemy present because that will effect hiring new mercs.

I added Grunty and Spider to my team to bring it up to 14. I had hired Igor forgetting Gasket doesnt like him so I had to release Igor, Gasket had just been around too long and can fix stuff so fast, although Ruiz has trained up to a handy mechanic also. I just wish he was more accurate with that M-60. He can chunk some grenades though.

After I am done with as much of this campaign as I can do with all the bugs I will go back and try the trick you recommended about reinstalling everything.

"Hoo-AH!"

Hey Trooper,
My name is Sidetrack. In reality and on the forum. The first time I saw you call me sidekick, I responded by calling you tripper. This time I'm telling you straight up.

No hard feelings, yet. Just want to make sure things are clear before you f--k up again.

Other than that, yeah, when I had collateral damage from the arti strike, I found some AIM members refused jobs from me.

The carbine - garande is a garande. In WWII they had the M1 Carbine, M1 Garande, and the M1A1 Thompson as the standard light infantry weapons. The paratroopers used the M1A1 carbine (with folding wire stock). The carbine in the the SOG69 game were (I believe) technically M2 carbines, which had full auto options. The primary differences between a carbine and garande are:
Carbines have magazines where garandes have stripper clips. The carbine was designed first for officers, to give them a light weapon with the range of a rifle (garande) and the weight of a pistol. The carbine was the compromise weapon with a lighter shell than the 30.06 garande rifle ammo, shorter barrel, and thus a shorter effective range. However, the magazines could hold twenty or thirty rounds as opposed to the garande's eight. A stripper clip is sort of like a magazine without a case, and fits entirely inside of the garande. When the Garande has run out of ammo, the stripper clip is ejected so a new one can be immediately put in it's place. If you listen and watch very closely, you'll see and hear the differences between the carbine and garande in Saving Private Ryan (and probably in Band of Brothers).

Gotta get back to work.
Peace out and blame Canada,

Sidetrack

Man, I am sorry dude for lousing up your name. I caught that earlier and boy was I embarrassed. I certainly did not intend to get it wrong.

Still trying to get use to this forum thing and posting.

Thanks for the heads up. I enjoy reading your posts and hope you don't harbour hard feelings. I went back and edited the post to correct the name where I got it wrong. Sorry again.

Well my first SOG 69 campaign came to an end tonight after 75 days of humping the boonies. I could never get the G11 sector to open up despite having found the password. I trooped all over to each of the firebases to see if the helicopters would take me there but no luck. So I retired my team.

Spooky ended up with 173 kills and 53 assists.

It was a fun campaign except for all the installation problems.

I salute Becoming X for his hard work and his dedication to capturing the era of combat in Vietnam.

Going to reinstall all new tomorrow and try again.

"Heh! Great special effects!"

Trooper,
It is possible, though you probably already know, that you didn't type in the password correctly. The passwords are case-sensitive. For example, the first password opens with the first letter capitalized and the rest lower case. This could get confusing as the item descriptions are in all caps. Just look really, really, really close to see which letters are BIGGER than the others to figure out if they are capitalized or not.
Hope it's not too late for you to try it!

When I clear out the Triangle, I'll try it out and tell you if it is the case.

Cannot get to Cambodia. Assume that entry point is accessed through D9 entry point, but systematic review of all sectors and data does not turn up a password for the D9 zip file. Have so far been able to work around any bugs and glitches and have accessed all sectors [i.e. Tay Ninh, Iron Triangle, An Loc, and Prisoner Rescue Mission] and overcome opposition. Now I'm stumped. Have installed Dr. Quacks SOG 69 Patch 1, but to no avail. Any suggestions or even outright spoilers would be appreciated. Thanks.

To get the pw for D9.zip, you need to talk to Bullock, who gives you some recon data with the password. He can be found somewhere to the east of the An Loc firebase, usually hanging around in the middle of the sector.

Hope this helps,
Vurt
