1)is it true that it replaces the extended ear?

2)does it really work in terms of gameplay?

3)would it be possible to change the bandana to being a helmet while still giving the sight bonus of the sun goggles?

Hey Shadow,
I can't say that the army jacket gives you any special bonuses outside of having decent protection for little cost in weight. I would suspect if the army jacket replaced the extended ear it would, by default, only be allowed to be placed in one of the head slots in the merc equiped inventory. The only way it could help outside of armor is that if a merc is carrying less, he is more dextrous, and has a better chance of moving silently/stealthy.

The bandana as it says in it's description keeps the sweat out of a merc's eyes. I don't know if you've ever worked without one on a very hot, humid day, but sweat can blind you with every drop. I would like to see the sunglasses returned into the mod, but because of (lack of) programming options, I would expect that only one item can replace the sun goggles, and bandanas certainly lasted longer in the bush than sunglasses.

The helmet is armor, the sunglasses are headgear. Also, helmets are metal, and - especially without a liner, bandana, a towel, and/or hair to insulate the top of your head, I would expect an artificial fever condition because of it. Try wearing a frying pan on top of your head under a heat lamp in a sauna!

The extended ear really didn't exist back then, and even now, I would expect, it is going to be as much a nusence to use one as a lavalere microphone. Can you picture spotting a target at a distance with an extended ear, then firing an M60 at the target? Instant deafness.

yo sidetrack thanks for the answer anyway although my question was ment differently.these questions will hopefully be answered by one of the creaters of this great mod.
if you look at compare the myweapons.txt file of sog to ordinary jagged alliance you will notice that the itemnumber of the sunngoggles and the bandana are the same.
for army jacket and extended ear the itemnumbers are equal, too.

1) YES. 2) YES.
Bandana replaced sunglasses, recoil buffer replaced laserscope, and army jacket replaced extended ear (even if it sounds stupid - c'mon guys, electronic jacket, which enhances your hearing abilities?! It's too much. Even in '69. Even in Vietnam Very Happy .)
3)Try yourself !

Actually, modern hearing-enhancing devices also incorporate dampening... Just so You won't become deaf if someone shouts in the mic while You've got volume to the max and trying to make out a whisper.

This is also used in modern earmuffs that shooters wear, making them capable of hearing their friends/drill instructors/etc without excessive shouting and still being protected from the sound of gunfire.

But in 'Nam? Not very likely!

EDIT: In JA2 description, it is stated that extended ears amplify weak sounds and filter out loud ones.

Hi

the army jacket shouldn't be in the game, unless it's for sale at Betty's I guess. The original idea was to replace the NVG with a beret, that could be worn in the helmet slot, but retained the properties of the NVG. The idea being that at night without wearing heavy head gear (helmet) one would be more aware. This idea didn't work because I couldn't make the NVG's fit into the head armor slot. But they could fit in the chest slot. So I decided to give it another shot with the extended ear. I decided that taking off one's heavy and bulky flak vest may reasonably increase one's hearing. I don't know if the army jacket retained the properties of the extended ear but it's armor value was too high and I was unable to change it so I got rid of the army jacket.
