@Kaine,
I thing you'll appreciate it more if I hold on to these for now, and don't ruin the surprise...
I think I was quite generous in the sneak-peak.

And let's don't talk about me - this tread is all about Becoming X' upcoming Vietnam mod!

@Jay,
correct me if I'm wrong, but in all your screenshots all weapons have 'Normal' ammo - no AP and no HP. Is this intended to be a feature in this mod?

Hey Ramfall, Thanks for putting Khaine in his place... that'll teach him  Never speak of other mods in my thread... EVER!!! Mad

I'm just joking.

About the ammo types in my mod, you are correct to notice no AP or HP varieties. The armour in my mod is fairly weak so HP ammo would have been too powerful. I got rid of AP so I could use more of the ammo for different guns. Not too many of the guns in my mod have interchangable magazines.
And I still need play testers. Quack is on the list if he's still interested. I'll probably need one or two more I guess.

Hello Becoming X, I just read the interview on your upcoming Vietnam campaign. Your concept sounds really good, I can't wait to play this new campaign:D.

If you're still looking for some playtesters I would be interested, it would be a great pleasure for me to help you!

I need one more tester to have a go at Vietnam. If you want in, email me with why you would be a good tester and what type of JA player you are (night ops, daytime stuff, thief, things like that).

Thanks...

Hey Erasure
No one cares what you think about Spooky action figures. The truth is he's not really working out. His speech is aiight, but his picture is horrible. I think I may get rid of him. And replace him with a Becoming X merc. He'd be better looking, wouldn't be able to shoot or do much but his dexterity would be high!

I originally put this in another post of mine in the technical area, but what do you think about this? We were discussing the explosions with the mines in DL. And how I thought they were airstrikes the first time I played it.

What might work within the engine, is this:

Once you control a SAM site, the airstrikes will stop. Airstrikes only occur if Deidranna's forces make a call. I bet you could set it up for after the attack initiates, 20-25 turns of battle or maybe a little more the airstrike (mines going off in actuallity) would occur. This would factor in calling for air support, and allowing time for the air support to actually get there. But if you kill everyone in 25 rounds or less and activate a switch (which could be repixed as a radio) it would in effect call off the strike.

I think this would be a little easier to right in, it would play off of the DL mine scenarios, just slightly modified.

What do you think? This might work in Becoming X's Vietnam campaign that's being built up.

Just wanted to update the thread here a little.

The Vietnam SOG 69 campaign is coming along nicely. I've got three testers who are helping me with testing as well as contributing sti's, even animations, and weapons tweaks and things so I'm happy.

I'm hoping to have all the maps done by the first week of July or so. Then maybe a little longer to test all the maps and things then it's release time!!

Later...

At first I didnt really think much about doing a Vietnam scenario, but the more I thought about it the more I liked it.
1. How is the PRC77 (or PRC25)going to work? Will it be used to contact higher for orders, artillery, ...?
2. Will there be a skyrider type character you can call in for pickups/medevacs?
3. Marvin the ARVNs?
4. Younger (higher health, strength, agility, dexterity)(lower experience, marksmannship, wisdom) versions of popular mercenaries? Would be cool, but I know itd be a big pain to do.

Looking Forward to it.

Hi Dr. J

I agree that it'd be really cool to include 60's stats for mercs. example Len and Gus would be alot younger and a little less experienced but better health stats and agility maybe. But to do that correctly you'd have to include some of the old school mercs and things from JA and then create new mercs to hire, and it'd just be too much work for me.

As it is because of the fast rate of increase in UB I've altered all the mercs stats back or below their JA2 levels. This mod is a lot longer than UB was and the merc stats were really made for UB so I felt a decrease in all merc skills was needed.

The PRC-77 isn't really that big a deal, it's not that innovative but I like to think it's sort of creative use of what is already in the game.

Pickups can't be arranged with a skyrider type character, but there are designated LZ's that your mercs know about and can plan to go to to resupply and heal up.

As for MARVN you can assume that some of the milita in An Loc Special Forces Camp are southern vietnamese. I wanted to make an ARVN RPC, but decided my voice acting on such a character would be more annoying than anything else. There are already four RPC's in the game. All new baby, of varying levels of annoying!!

Take that to the bank and cash it!! :karate:

Everyone should start right now learning to control their salivary glands because the upcoming Vietnam campaign doesn't just bring you a wagonload of new sectors that play like a dream and send you on several real sub-quests, besides 4 new RPCs and even more NPCs... There's even a complete weapons mod that goes far beyond the usual picture swapping routine and introduces distinctly new ways to play the best strategy game ever.
So if you suddenly find yourself awake one night in the weeks to come, wondering if they might have released Vietnam '69 SOG just now, better boot up that machine and check up yourself Very Happy
(I hope that was enough of a hype) Wink

Nah, you need more flashing lights and smilies for that.

Seriously though, I'm really looking forward to this mod. A different time period sounds to me like it could be really refreshing. The lil' treats we have ben offered so far (Spooky, PRC77 etc...) are making me one excited individual. Keep it up, X-man! (and playtesters, you lucky bastards)

Btw, X, where'd you get that new sig? Sounds like hip-hop to me...

Hello

That was some good hyping Quack. Smile

Eisenhower has posted some pics of his progress in the campaign, though it's should be noted that those pics are of before he patched his JA2UB.exe, there still aren't different types of ammo in the game.

Khaine, my signature is indeed some lyrical goodness from tha Alkaholiks. Old school, but sweet.

As for updated screen shots and things, if there are anymore they will be posted here at Bearspit. As for a release, I hope to have the maps finished soon and then get the testers to run through them. So maybe it will be done by the end of July? I'm not sure. In any case I want to get this done pretty badly now, so I'll be pushing to have it done ASAP.

@ Becoming X

It's "Only When I'm Drunk" from the "21 & Over" album, right... Continues with *Ahem*:

"One too many, I reckon
Feelin I got ta earl, any second
Wanna get up but can't move, feels like I'm stuck in the groove
What the f*ck was I tryin to prove?"

Thought I recognized that. Jeesh, this is real old. Think I bought that album used. *Reminisces*

Sorry, this was way off topic, but can't give up a hip-hop discussion when I see one.

I got a knack for downin' four ohs,
all the hoes knows them alkaholik bros,
**** got a fourty, keep a fifth in the trunk,
might f*** an ugly b**** but only when I'm drunk.

Yep that's the 'liks. I bought that album when it was fresh off the press.

To keep it on topic... I'm about 30 maps away from completing the entire campaign. That's closer than it sounds because making jungle maps is like eating oreos... or something... in any case it's pretty easy. Two more quests are up and running so I'm happy. Just have to get some voice stuff done for some RPC's.

one Swedish K - $400
two clips of 9mm - $10
one camo kit - $5
one sweaty bandana - $1
kneeling behind a rock bursting badguys with Spooky - Priceless

More shameless hype...

At first I wasn`t really interested in this MOD, but now I`m really looking forward to it. No more playing JA2UB with the same weapons and almost same maps and settings. Be sure to do some serious hype when releasing this, so I can notice and download ASAP.
BTW: how large is it going to be? With my 56K, I don`t appreciate 50+ MB downloads...

Hi MH

The mod is very close to being done. But I fear it's going to be quite large. I'm going to slim it down as much as I can, but there is a lot of NPC speech that takes up quite a bit of room.

We'll see. Maybe there could be a lite version where the NPC's have text only, no sound, that may save quite a bit of space.

I realize that at this point the mod is pretty much done. and i know that you already said you weren't gonna add in any more characters. but i was wondering if you could possibly switch one of the more irritating mercs (spider or thor) with a cool merc like say... spike from the first to games, who was indeed my favorite character. i mean you wouldn't even have to make new voice files, just extract from the original. i guess you could somehow smooth the face graphic with adobe and change it to sirtec format, i dunno cause i've never tried. but that would be really really cool. to bring back his whole personality, and stuff. there's other characters that you could do the same with, like bud (although he was pretty annoying) or jimmy (who was damn cool) and ears (who was great) or even bob (meh). all the voice files are in those old games, you just need to clear up the faces.

i've been looking forward to SOG 69 since i read about it on the BP news page, i've always loved forest battles, and especially ones that feel kinda old school. i'm on a 56k modem, but i don't really care to much about the meg size, i'll be having a friend burn it to a cd for me probably. everything i've read about this so far sounds awsome. especially the idea of having to return to an LZ to get more ammo for your weapons, that sounds very very cool. well yeah, blah blah blah, looking forward to it.
