I've heard several people mention stealing items from soldiers and NPC's. How do you do that? I've been playing JA2 since it came out and didn't know you could steal. Is it a matter of knocking them unconscious with a crowbar or something? Does it require high DEX? Stealthy skill?

Attack enemies with either fists, crowbar, or knuckle dusters. After a couple of hits they will knock out and fall. At that point, have a merc "search" the fallen enemy by holding ctrl and click on the enemy.

Things to keep in mind:
- The enemy must be at least critical (can't steal from an "dying" enemy.
- Have a merc a few squares away do the "searching", otherwise in won't work.
- Although the game will tell you that searching will cost you e.g. 15 AP, it will use up all of your AP (bug). The way to prevent this is to have a small item in your main hand (like a healing drug or a canteen).

There are some more things about stealing, use the "search" option of this forum, top right corner, and you will find many other posts about stealing.

In theory you don't need to have your ennemy unconcious to steal his stuff but it seems it helps.

This procedure works almost 100% of times. Usually, you rush to the guy and knock him down a 3 punches (right hand empty). Once he is lying on his face, you should punch once more because usually on the next turn he wakes up and shoots you at point blank range. Don't do it a 5th time because when the guy in in dying state, you won't be able to steal any more.

Then the procedure is the following : (you need 20 AP's for that or somebody else to help you sharing the action)
- you knock once again (4 AP) (so that you don't get a nasty surprise on next turn)
- stand up (2 AP)
- walk back one tile (2 AP) (because there is a bug that makes the stealing not working if you are already by the body - same bug as filling with petrol the cars)
- you ctrl-click on the body so that you get the usual read grab hand and steal (2 + 10 AP).
- You get the clock and a message telling you what you stole.

If both hands are empty, or if a slot, large enough, is empty in your inventory, then it is over. You can click Done and kill the guy with a few more punches on the next turn (silent and gives you more STR and DEX).
If you don't have a slot or hands available, then you usually get in your hands (not always) the new weapon and you find at your feet the one you were carrying. Finish off the guy with your fists.

If it fails (too low DEX) and the guy is not yet too low on stats, you can try again (knock, stand, walk back etc...)

You can use or mix different techniques to get the guy unconcious : Shoot at the legs ; use 12gauge ; use crowbar or duster ; use tranquilizer (not sure it exist in UC) ; throw a stun grenade, use 2 mercs to double the AP's. But remember that if you don't punch the guy once he is unconsious he will most likely wake up on next turn. On the other hand do not overdo it because the guy must be at a minimum in critical state when you try to steal.

Give it a try, it is fun. In UC the guys on the roof usually have goodies that you want to try to steal :diabolical:

As already mentioned, you cant steal from a 'dying' enemy... But there is nothing wrong about doing the charitable and humane thing;
  • Bandage/heal your enemy back up to critical
  • Steal his weapon
  • Give him a quick burst with his own gun to put him out of his misery (I feel it is cruel and unusual punishment to shoot a guy up and then let him bleed to death)
Need to be careful on the timing if you do it in realtime mode, as the enemy might just wake up in the midst of the process and thank you for your mercy by giving your medic a quick burst from their SMG.

Oh, and just to clarify on Blasts post - use ctrl+click to search, not sure what alt-click does but am reasonably sure it wont work.

Also, have found I am able to steal from enemies without doing the run away one step and run back and steal trick that was required for regular JA2. Give it a try - those few extra APs might just save your life... or I might just be lucky.

You are right, sorry, I'll edit my post for more clarity.

Also, indeed, not walking back works as well... occasionally... I have found that if you punch once the guy when he is unconcious, you get to crouch position, then when you initiate the steal, you stand up and it it seems that this is enough to work. However I have tried it twice in JA2:UC and it failed twice  so I don't take any chance any more, I don't like to reload. :armsfolded:

On a related note, does taking the money/goods you 'find' in the shops effect your popularity amongst the locals? I know the police take offence at you liberating their gear. :nono:

Before you pick up an item, check the sector inventory screen. If you see that the item is greyed out there, that means that it belongs to somebody, and they may take offense to your taking it. If it isn't greyed out, then you're free to take it, and there should be no ill effects. Items may also be greyed out if they are behind a locked door (or other inaccessible area) or if you are not in the sector whose inventory you are viewing.

@scurvey The following are good habits to get into:
1. After battle, use your lockpicker/breaker to open every thing in town.
2. Go to Strategic screen. Open the sector Inventory and dole out equipment, reload weapons(etc.).
3. If there are items grayed-out, you know where they are on the map. If it's something you want, then go back to Tactical and plan on keeping yourself from being seen taking the item.

You would not want to get caught with your hand in the proverbial cookie jar.
Plus, more efficiency in handling equipment should give you more time for battles! Very Happy

In fact, when I play the original JA2 now, I use cheats to Teleport around the sector and show items... nothing nefarious, but it does speed things up considerably. Have fun, compadre! Cool

If trying to open everything becomes too boring, you can use the alt-E cheat to see all items. Then you can go directly to the equipment that is worth to pick up...But, yes, it's cheating.

I don't cheat - OK so I save and reload sometimes  - but I may start to use Alt-E.
With all these great maps there is a great deal of "exploring" to do after clearing the sector.
Having hired Trevor as one of my initial team, he can open just about anything, but I think he's getting a little too old for the job as he is permanently low on energy. Wink

So far I've always used Trevor for the very same reason. And yes, he tires easily.
However, after he's worked about it a bit I found Barry to be just as good in the long run, he doesn't tire as fast and he's a hell of a lot cheaper. Hell, he even shares the voice actor. Smile

This doesn't really apply to UC, but it does to some other mods, eg SOG69. Trapped items (some of them really useful) don't appear in the sector inventory. You have to pick them up in map.
