I've got ahost of nice 5.56 NATO weapons but dmaned if I can find ammo for them. Bobby Ray's doesn't carry much 5.56 and so I'm presently out of 5.56 in Troy with no way ot grab more. Am I just getting unlucky with the mix a Bobby Ray's or did I get these guns too early?

One last question, the CAR-15 takes .223 whihc I thought was 5.56mm. Is the Car-15 round just lighter than the 5.56mm round and that is why the differentiation?

you can usually buy 5.56 ammo from tony, his colleague smitty (spelling?) who is in a town square near him and bobby ray's, haven't come across any other merchants that sell it so far...
check bobby ray's stock every day, i think he restocks once a day (i usually check it around 10 am each day) by the way i prefer the 5.54 Russian weapons, less ammo troubles!
have fun!

ps: your other question: i guess .223 is the civilian or older variant of 5.56 ammo (less penetrating?) someone correct me if i'm wrong..

In real world..

.223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO are the same thing.

There is no difference.

.223 is just the commercial name for the ammo and 5,56x45mm is the military name..

So why the difference in game terms?

The difference is in the damage. Notice the damage difference between a .223 and 5.56? That is to symbolize the upgrade to an M4. I'm going to assume that it was easier to just rename some SKS ammo, versus making new ammo...or something to that effect.

They had to work within the parameters of the game.

Because of gamelimitations. Each ammotype can only handle two sizes of clips. So, the .223 is a 20 round clip in the game without AP, while the 5,56 mm Nato is featured in 30 and 120 round clips/boxes.

And also I needed a crappy assaultrifle to use in the first part of the game. I also wanted to make the upgrade apparent, so when you upgrade from Car-15 to M4 you'd notice the difference.

The chamber pressure of Military grade firearms is lower than that of civilian firearms. Hence if you use .223 civi ammo in a military grade firearm you'll cause damage and jamming of the gun. However you can use the military grade 5.56 NATO in a .223 civi rifle with no damage to the gun.

I hope I got that the right way round please correct me if I didn't Very Happy

The 5.56mm military cartridge fired in a .223 Rem chamber is considered by SAAMI (Small Arm and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) to be an unsafe ammunition combination.

I figured there was some game type issue like this and you REALLY notice the upgrade from the Car-15 to the M4 so that worked quite nicely.

Car-15 is simply no better than any decent SMG in the game looking at its stats.

I had a few CAR-15's didn't get many hits, so I threw it in for M4 upgrades.
Now the M4 is crap for my use (Rooftop near end of Line Of Sight shooting) So the M4 isn't exactly ranged for my use, can be used indoor however, Lynx uses a AKSU-74, remember, doors are you friends, I had Lynx open a door, shoot one of the enemies, and close it again.
I kept repeating this tactic and I got 5 kills thanks to the door.
