What is the deal with the red upgrade marks? I guess that it denotes rank or something? 1-3? Private? It says to use the ctrl+GA661 cheat and then put it in the first hand of the merc and the press alt+W. What is the deal with this? I couldn't figure it out. What does it do? when do you enter the commands on the keyboard any help would be useful. Thanks.

Not sure what your talking about? But the ctrl+GABBI allows you to do some cheating like alt+e shows enemy locations and equipment in crates and such.

If your talking about 'Merging items' then take a the item to be merged in the right hand pick up the item you want to merge it with then left click on the original item and place the item in one of the boxes. Rather like installing scopes and such.

If you want to refill something like a canteen then left click on it, then apply the coke can to to the canteen.

I do most of this stuff on the Strategy map. But every so often on the tactical.

I'm not a good person to answer since I've never used a cheat code - but I think I understand the question .

Certain insignia can be merged onto equipment e.g. the medic patch onto a spectra helmet in order to give a medic helmet that provides no additional protection and is harder to repair (just WHY anyone would want such is a different question). At least one similar insignia can be purchased from Betty's convenience store and supposedly offers some benefit with the cheat codes enabled. My guess is the question relates to this process (please correct me, Dustywt4 if I'm all mixed up).

Those are AFAIK for giving "officer" ranks to your mercs. But I have to admit the instructions how to achieve that (and whatfor) aren't too clear. Someone of the dev team should/could explain this?

You are right. that is what I am asking about. I think that those rank distinction patches for the mercs are only applicable to the commando armor? Arianna, you are on the right track. How do I use these items?

I'm confused myself now.
In your original post you were definitely talking about the rank insignia ( Kurt got it right). But now it seems to be the commando, striker, medic upgrades you have moved onto.

They are two separate things.

The rank insignia is just for role playing apparently and has no real function. I bought 3, used the gabbi cheat and scrolled through the ranks to get the desired rank. But after a while I ditched them, as they took up room. It's a pity that they didn't have a more practical function.

Now I understand! But haven't a clue what that rank stuff does...never checked it out. Thought it was just window dressing. Which it may to be or maybe it helps with reputation or leadership?

ie You've got a merc with low leadership trying to recruit a merc that needs to be recruited by high leadership. Give the low leadership merc medals and rank might have an effect? Never thought of it before. If you go into a shop wearing the goodies will you get better prices or goodies? Would they help in traing miltia?

Looks like I've got some testing to do!

Just tried out the rank thing, followed the instructions to the letter and got no benifit that I know of. But I did get CHEEETER on my history page...reloaded my quick save!

Couldn't combine it, maybe somebody else can find it's use.

Yes, you can't get away from this "Cheater" thing, since you need a cheat code to make those ranks work (as far as I understood). And no, it won't enhance your leadership; On the contrary, you have to have a high enough leadership to rise in rank (AFAIK).

Nobody from the mod team around here? There is at least one person on this board who should know exactly what it does and how it works...
