Given that part of the beauty of JA2UC is the treacherous nature of lurking enemies, I feel that the radio (former x-ray detector) takes away from the game. Besides, it's heavy. My only real love is when I have one last enemy that I have searched for for too long and can't find them. The radio and lots of mortar rounds seems a bit unfair...

Thoughts?

I don't quite agree. Quite often the last enemy is hiding inside some room in some shack and you have to sift through the whole town to find him.
The only "cheat"-like use of the device is to make sure there are no enemies around when you want to speed up squad movement. It just takes away some of the stress (bad) and speeds the game up (very good): I rather hate sneaking slowly through the whole map only to find all the enemies are on the far side...

Concerning mortar rounds, I think the enemy should use them too... :diabolical:

I've found the radio misleading and heavy.

I've used it to try to find the last enemy and it doesn't show him most times. Why, because he's motionless...but if I go to alt-e cheat I find a moving enemy while the radio still sez 'no enemy'.

It was pretty good in JA2, but I think they've dumbed it down to near useless and dangerous.

As far as fast movement, I've had the radio tell the way is clear, then have my point killed around the next corner.

I've tossed it!

PS
All my Mercs say they're much happier without it, especially Rude Dog who was gryping about carrying it!

Strange, never had this kind of problem. I cheated myself a radio after having spent one afternoon desperately looking for the last enemy, and used it afterwards from time to time to speed up the final cleaning of the maps. It works exactly like the X-Ray device in JA2, with the same range too. And BTW no merc never complained about it (and it *is* heavy), including Rude Dog. :whoknows:

Maybe you've met some running enemies? The range of the device is short enough for an enemy to make an approach in one round.

@Kurt,
you are absolutely right! The only thing I altered is the weight and graphics. Other than that it's just the same old X-ray device. And the reason I altered it was because I thought the X-ray device was to powerful in the original game. So, by making it heavy it's not possible to have every merc carrying a radio each.

Thanks for the feedback. Any thoughts on the monoculars? I find them very helpful in non-urban settings when I have to travel in daylight...

I find they are essential (speaking about monoculars). I just don't understand why they weren't in the original game...

I JUST CAN NOT SET UP THE RADIO even by my MEC 93 merc, why? Everytime I try the two parts just get broken.

I don't exactly hate the radio, but I don't use it either. It would be nice to have to find that one elusive final enemy, but not worth the cumberson space requirement and the hefty weight. I could carry another LAW instead, and frankly that's exactly what I do. Wink

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but how does the cheat thing work?

Never mind. Figured it out... That Alt-e really is helpful. I HATE spending so much time wandering all over a sector to find 1 remaining bad guy.
