What is the in game effect of equiping your helments with the medic patch? Will the bad guys not shoot the medic?

Also there is one door in the basement of Galeio where you find Shady. I can't open it for anything! Its just north of the lab area. I have Trevor with max mechanic and lockpick, no luck. And explosive don't work either. Any ideas?
