Sneak up on an enemy without them noticing (easier said than done) or sit around training it up (dull).

Or do both. Let the merc you want to develop take point for part of every battle. Then train them for a couple hours after. Using that method I had Spider gain 18 points of agility by the middle of the game.

What do you mean ? I mean what kind of trainning are you talking about ? Do you mean to assign a merc to practicing ?

Student and teacher if theres a high agility merc with nothing else to do. Practice if there isn't. Those are your only choices in the training menu. In my games it always seems like the physical stats (agility, strength, dexterity) improve faster if you mix up the routine and use all three methods.

In that game I was using an all female team so strength was an issue. After the battle load the weakest like packmules and make them walk back to base. Then practice strength. The next day have Rosebud teach them. It didn't take long for everyone to gain alot of points.

Same goes for your medics and mechanics. If you throw in some practice and student/teacher once in a while their dexterity improves alot faster than just using the skill.

That's the way it seems to me anyway.

I've never had any luck improving health or wisdom.

Here's some agility cheese for the players with no patience. In the cargo sector east of the calisto airport, where you first fight the white shirts. Attack as soon as it gets dark and kill everyone but the 2 guards in the little booths by the gate. Put your sunglasses on (they're in lit squares so your sighting range is longer with the sunglasses, try it if you don't believe me). You can spend the rest of the night sneaking up on those 2 in complete safety.

An easy way to improve WIS is by deploying/unarming explosives. Try it with Barry.

All you have to do is to deploy TNT and assign it to explode after 5 turns. Then assign your merc to unarm the explosive. Doing that will increase EXP and WIS skills. There are some explosives that are easier to unarm such as TNT and ground mines.

Occasionally health will rise if you overload the merc and send them on long treks. I have also heard that if a merc is badly wounded (like less than 1/3 hp left), he or she can gain some health if they survive. To do this, it's best if your merc has a bleeding wound. That way, they lose hp slowly and you can have a medic standing by to patch them up before they expire.

You can also train without a trainer (not practice). Your merc will have red status (to indicate that there is no trainer) but it works anyway. As a side bonus, training this way doesn't seem to cause fatigue, meaning you don't need to put them to sleep.

One thing I disagree with the game is that a sniper scope IS a kind of a monocular, and they would be supposed to work as monoculars.

I mean, a merc equipped with a sniper scoped weapon should be able to spot enemies from longer ranges. Well. That

@Dagger

I think I may have not expressed myself clearly...

There are 3 ways I know of to increase Health but none of them are particularily fast.
1) train or practice
2) travel between non-city sectors overloaded
3) wait until you have lost most of your health before bandaging. The healing process might give you a point.

Do not travel with a bleeding wound!

Umm.... the best way to improve health:

Sort of a bug, but here goes - you overload your mercs. You give them instructions to move to anotehr non city sector from a non city sector. You cancel the orders. Repeat. You will gain fast Smile

That increases Strength, not health....

I've used that technique to train Shank to ST in the 90's but he didn't gain a single point of health.

Never happened to me:gaining a health point after medical treatment.Not that I tried it too often,but...couln't "testify" for something I've never seen.
But gaining one health point when overloaded and with 15 points of health did occur.Quite often.Same for canceling the movement order with an overloaded and wounded merc.

@Bane,I must ask,did you heal Shank ,back then,before you applied the cancel move trick?Used regen boosters?Cause he usually(not treated) gains at least 2 points on health and at least 2 experience levels 'till he's 90 in strength-in my JA2 and WF games...

Oh,and my IMP gained at least 6 agi points just by pressing Alt+L after he saw ennemies.Guess you could count this as an AGI training method. Wink
The rate of occurence in UB is increased,I guess,cause it didn't happen so often in normal JA2.But then again,am I the only one that observed that the mercs seem to gain experience(but not only that) a little(heck,or better said A LOT) quicker in UB?
And please don't tell me it's the increased number of ennemies,cause I just won't believe that.Not even in the 8000+ game my IMP wasn't level 8 after 2 cities,with no extra repairing and no mine plant-untrap or "cancel move" trick...

@AZAZEL, I usually heal Dynamo and Shank. In WF, I don't think I did this time, due to to lack of regen, but I don't recall any health boost.

Just checked my game and looked at the personnel files. Shank is ST:92 and still HLTH:73 so he went up 61 in ST and nothing in HLTH. Checking my other mercs, none of them gained HLTH either, although they are all 90+ in ST.

Yeah,Bane,tried it again in WF(6 hospitals in inventory) for Shank being with the health "on the yellow",and it did not happen again!2levels of experience again,this time 'till he reached 77 strength.Who knows...This type of alleatory element is guaranteed to give birth to controverse.

@Dagger:(smiles) Quite so!
