see a modmaker might deliberately place his new merc on slot (say) 61 to have a special placement routine, use the existing script and files and the trader interface

and have, in exchange, the merc currently occupying slot 61 moved to a diffderent slot, say slot 120 something.

using existing functions by way of overwriting can be a very powerful tool, and the slots as they are right now make it easy to use this, the limitations here are where new behaviour is wanted, especially making former NPC slots "hireable" or add new NPC's, traders and hireables.
