Right, the automagic determines the data directory from the path of the bundle for OS X. You can create a file ~/.ja2/ja2.ini and write a line "data_dir = $SOME_PATH", if you want to override this.

I see no reason for it to run slow and I have not experienced this problem. Can you describe this further? What are the exact symptoms?
