I believe the answer is in the message. I know nothing of Mac OS X but it looks like you compiled SDL to use the wrong video driver. You probably get a lot of emulation, conversion in the rendering process. I think SDL defaults to Quartz now, you may have downloaded an old version. Get the latest 1.2 stable source (or libraries and headers) at http://ww.libsdl.org/. A lot of people use SDL on Mac OS X and you shouldn't have any problem to install or compile it.
