Well... if you were to read the second post you could probably tell that I didn't make this thread criticizing it out of the blue... but yes, I do agree: taken out of context, what I've written, lacks class and doesn't make much sense.

The post was made in a thread that invited users to 'test' the windows version of straciatella, since they decided (are deciding?) to use it as a basis for 1.14/smp.

as far as the kind of response it would get, well probably the one you've been getting so far: none. But I will write my impressions/criticism of straciatella even if it serves no purpose and no one reads it.

I don't own a desktop computer so I will test straciatella on a HP compaq laptop with a ati card, a netbook and a mac powerbook.

  • On the mac powerbook: I can't really install it since the powerpc port that was made was for amiga. As much sense as that makes since if you compare the number of users of amiga and os x you will clearly see you wil get more players on the mac side (not to mention they are starving or games) I'd even say there are more mac than linux users but that would probably angry the developers.

  • On the netbook: You can install it but playing it is close to impossible since the 640x480 screen resolution is like 60% of the netbook screen so you have to strain your eyes quite a bit. A 800x600 resolution should fix that. Also I should mention that music/speech files won't be popular with netbook players since ssd drive space comes at a premium and the straciatella should be able to run without them just like ja2 gold did.

  • On the HP compaq (where I have: JA2 1.13, UB, JA Wildfire installed) I can finally compare straciatella to all the other versions and the stand alone wildfire.

Straciatella is clearly the superior version, by far... It's plain to see that the people who worked with the code did a superb job.

To give you an idea on my 3ghz laptop 1.13 would constantly be at 99% cpu usage, made no sense I know. Straciatella jumps around 20%-60%... what's impressive about this is that it translates to the game itself it's so fucking smooth and responsive it's absoutely amazing. The gameplay itself seems so much more fluid and better than all the other ja's I've tried... so yes the code was clearly well written and cleaned up I can't stress how much better this version 'feels' compared to others.

...But then you get completely idiotic stuff that makes you go 'puta mierda, porque?' like the decision to have your enemies bodies just vanish seconds after you shoot them 'WHY?' this is so completely unrealistic and stupid ... y'know what's funny having the crows beak an invisible body lol. The other stuff I've mention having to have a folder in my documents with JA2.INI irritates me, that is where I keep all my german beastility porn. The fact that you have to have the music and speech slf's also is kinda stupid...

... and again the biggest beef, the 640x480 resolution, yes I bet for people with desktop computers it doesn't reall matter much but for people with laptops you eiher have a playing area of a stamp or you stretch it and it looks HORRIBLE... even the geekiest linux ja2 player would agree 800x600 would be the perfect resolution for this game, there's a 800x600 mod for straciatellabut it's ony for version 0.10.

That said in 10 years since it was released straciatella is the most significant/important step ja2 took.

Straciatella is what 1.13 should have been had it not turn into a thousand monkeys throwing stuff at it to see what sticks.

Before someone miscontrudes me, I am a fan of 1.13 but it is clearly broken from the pathing to weird game crashing bugs like opening up old B.Ray's emails, just editing all the options in the *.ini before you play is a chore and you are left with the feeling 'damn this has been fucked wih more than $2 thai whore' at some point common sense should take over and you shuld think twice 'is it broken? no? then I shall not fuck with it', the 25 AP system is a clear example, ja2 was designed from the ground up to use 25 ap, why change it to 100 ap? it's the same fucking thing it just makes it more confusing.

Same can be said about adding 3288293892388389 guns that differ 1 or 2 points in this or that, why add the fucking XM8??? It's a fucking prototype that was CANCELLED, you might as well add a laser gun since you would have as much chance of buying it as you would have a XM8.

I kinda fear smp will turn straciatella into another 1.13 since that are already releasing 'gun packs' for it and asking it to merg with 1.13

What it needs is for some code geeks to clean up the code and delete bugs, a 800x600 res would be quite nice since I'm playing it windowed now ... the externalization/allthat shit is not really important and should be put on hold...

there I was as honest and blunt as possible
