so keep in mind that some indicative naming may be required to avoid confusion.
Already in place, I use the following indicators: (<) and (>) to indicate a stock state different from the "default." I started off using the name to set the two apart, but since I ended up using separate items for the alternate stock state, might as well add the graphics to make the Folding Stock System look nice. Copies of rifles used in the Rifle Launched Grenade feature are only differentiated by name.

Part shameless plug, and part passing on experience, some of the ideas for transforming items are implemented in my projects via rather ungainly merger and NAS slot order-of-operation exploitation (not a specific feature of NAS intended by WarmSteel or ChrisL, but they've been humouring my use of it). Alrulco Folding Stock is the easiest of the three projects to install as it is essentially all the advance item ideas dropped into the stock JA2 campaign. AFS/UC-1.13/DL-1.13 features of note where transforming items would be useful:
- Folding Stock System (a big chunk of the merger definitions)
- Rifle Launched Grenades (right now there are a bunch of complicated mergers to 1)disable bullet firing/present grenade slot, 2)convert the weapon back to a bullet firing weapon afterwards, single item transformation should at least allow getting rid of the 2nd type of mergers in this mod feature)
- Advance Reflex Sight + Magnifiers - not something that would be specifically replaced by a variable power scope, but proves the utility of a variable power scope under NCTH
