Also, the distinction should probably be part of the graphic (see smeagols 2,3 and 4rd trigger groups) and/or the item name ( like '2-4x40 Scope, 2.5x', where 2.5x indicates the currently used 'mode').


I think it will be perfectly acceptable to have a placeholder graphic, like a smoke cloud, for all incomplete merges, something to indicate you are still working on it, the text will tell the player at what stage the item merge currently is. I feel making detailed graphic for all temporary and at that stage unusable items is too much overkill and may slow down coding progress. However if the XML specifies a graphic, sure why not display it, but if there is no graphic specified, just display the placeholder.
