I can't think of any game that has done that

There are a few, yes. Space Rangers comes to mind, where items are randomly generated out of a template, with values being different for each item but similar across the same item type. However as I said, this makes it difficult to compare items e.g. when buying at a store - and Space Rangers only has about a dozen weapon archtypes!

Also the system there is specifically built for it. To implement this in JA2 you'd need to rewrite a lot and/or waste tons of memory keeping a gigantic amount of data about each individual item existing in the game - and as many of us know, there could be tens of thousands at any one time.

What I was thinking about, but I did not want to push people down that path by stating it, is a "fabricator" user interface, similar in looks to the key chain dialog. You put X number of items in, click the "combine" button, and if the game can do something with the stuff, you get Y number of items back.

Ah, like the Diablo Crafting Cube. While there are upsides to this as you say, I don't think that would make sense in the context of JA2. Personally I think merges - unwieldy as they are to modders - are a more elegant solution player-wise...

Actually Bob was part of the SMP, you talked to him over Skype several times, the two of you know each other. I am sure you can just ask him to do the code adjustments you need. He is a nice guy and I have not seen him not want to help.

Yes, I know how Bob is very well. But if you know me, you know that part of my enjoyment is figuring out how to do things on my own - it's the only way to learn, assuming of course you manage to understand what you're doing. It'll take me more time, but I'll get it eventually.

Remember how HAM started? The discussions we had before HAM became a known acronym? Things have a tendency to get bigger.

That would apply if we were having this discussion in a threat about ideas, or about this idea. We're not - this thread is about transformations...

Quote:
What if the transformation is not possible in the current configuration due e.g. attached items.

Invalid attached items are automatically removed and placed in the inventory. I could put up an alert box so that players don't miss this when it happens. Maybe it would be a good idea to make a list of situations and figure out what should happen in each of them, but I'll leave that up to you.
