I'll let someone with more expertise advise you on XML Editor.

But as far as distros go, it's entirely up to you if you can stomach some untested features. Alternatively you could play full mods, which are more streamlined.

But if you're all about testing new bells and toys, use the latest unstable SCI from Depressive Brot. That should get you the very latest additions (except compiling your stuff from SVN).
