The landmine trick does require a lot of mines, but that is generally not a problem. The Meduna garden sector has enough landmines scattered around to build a decent maze. The Drassen mine area needs extra landmines, I usually dig them up from Cambria SAM.
I haven't escaped from prison, although I know it's possible. It just doesn't interest me.
Here are some more tricks I use:
6) Clean out the Bloodcat lair with a single merc using hand to hand combat. You can do this with any merc, even Shank. Basically, I drop into the sector at night via the helicopter. I do NOT go to tactical mode! If you do, you will be in the middle of the lair surrounded by bloodcats! Instead, stay in map view and move north, then cancel the move. When you go to tactical mode, you will be near the top edge with no cats in sight. Stealthily work your way south to the lair. Just to the north east edge of the lair is a rock formation. In that formation is a spot where there is a rock in the 4 "straight" directions (NE,NW,SE,SW). Move there. If you are spotted, run to that spot. Once there, you can shoot any cat you see or simply fire into the air. This will attract all the nearby cats, probably over a dozen. When they get there, they will cluster around your position but because the rocks are in the way, they cannot attack you! On the other hand, YOU can hit them on the diagonal directions (N,S,E,W)! So simply beat them all to death one by one. Eventually, you run out of cats. Sometimes you can move out of your position and fire your gun to attract more, then run back. Other times, you have to track down the remaining cats yourself.
7) I always use camoflage kits when attacking a town. Since it only takes 5 minutes to move to each sector, a single application will last until you conquer the town.
Remote control explosives can be very handy when attacking Kingpin. Since you begin "friendly", you can move around his compound planting explosives in key locations. A particularily good location is at Spikes feet since the bar is otherwise a bit difficult to assault (only one door). You *could* use the same tactic with the Hicks but that would be overkill. Anyway, you seldom have many remote controlled explosives that early. Another good location for this is the underground sector of Orta. Once you pull a switch, gas is released, a number of doors open and elites come out of the control room. That makes it a good place to catch them with a remote controlled bomb. To increase the effect, you could also place RDX on top of your bomb. In Wildfire, you could also place a mustard gas grenade on top.
9) Sometimes, when an enemy is behind a tree or a rock, you can toss a grenade beside them. The blast won't kill them (unless you are playing Wildfire or a similar mod) but it will knock them away from their cover so you can shoot them.
10) You touched on this earlier in your post about training, but I'll mention it here: Build up a huge warchest before you hire your mercs, then hire them for a long time (say 6 weeks or more) while they are still cheap. For example, in my Wildfire game, Raven starts off at LVL2 and costs $38,000 for 2 weeks. Now she is LVL7 and costs $120,000 for 2 weeks. So when I first hired her, I re-hired her for an additional 6 weeks as soon as she arrived. It costs a lot up front, but it's the cheapest way in the long run.
