Excellent point here! Used to DG and JA2 when I first rushed to play JA1 (I only got the game this year) I started out with lots of guns and few boxes of ammo. Soon I was fighting enemies with knives, because by guns had run dry!

That makes me say that JA1 had a far more hard and balanced gameplay. It was hard to get a good team in the beginning and some decent weapons, so they joy of firing a modified Colt 45 was immense. Although unrealistic a bit, the ultimate weapons, the mod M16, was indeed priceless and worth sniping, cause a shot with it was definitely deadlier than one with the gun.
