I don't think taking away the right to bear arms will result in a police state. There are enough examples of countries that aren't police states but where people also don't have the right to bear arms.

The problem is: the morons that should never have firearms can more easily obtain one in a country where you can just go out and buy one. I know that when you REALLY want a gun to shoot someone you can obtain that gun almost anywhere in the world. But making it more difficult to obtain one might stop just a few morons from acquiring a gun. And in my opinion, that few is enough to ban the right to carry guns.

A ban on guns doesn't mean you won't be able to fire guns for fun. I'll talk about the dutch situation here, but we do have shooting ranges where you can fire a gun for fun.

edit: and all this because I wanted to know the difference between the tokarev and the makarov in ja2 UC??
