In UC the enemies have a way to collapse in the corners, or near a crate or a tree. And I think that's when the flaws of the isometric view come into play. You may see on the screen that your merc is right on the tile next to the collapsed enemy, but in fact your merc isn't close enough to make a succesfull steal. I think that's the reason you sometimes have to move yout merc on the other side of the collapsed enemy to be able to steal his gun.
