I know we had a thread like this, but I can't find it.
Your favourite team that you hire every time? I know everybody has a few favourite ones.
List them here.
Mine:
Igor (good sneaker)
Grizzly (Good strong HW guy)
Barry (good for lockpicking once his Mech improves a little)
Blood (this guy armed with grenades is like artillery!)
Razor (this guy is a demon, can do it all, except shooting good!)
These are the guys I picked waaay back when I got 'serious' about JA2, as in learned about sleeping
and so on.
The criteria was: Cheap, high wisdom, high agility (razor was a later addition) and cheap as can be.
I don't train my guys, so what they learn, they learn the hard way.
Oh and my IMP who is always Auto weapons and Night ops.

I agree that the cheap high wisdom mercs are some of the best to take through the entire game. The bottom row of AIM is really all you need to start. The only one I absolutely MUST have though is Igor.
Igor (night ops & stealth, levels quickly, cheap as hell...possibly the best merc in the entire game if you take him from start to end)
Grunty (as above with Igor, but not *quite* as cool and he trades stealth for HW, only slightly more expensive, he complements Igor in a team).
Barry (cheap, high explosives, high wisdom, levels quickly, lockpicking, can be a good mech once you train him up)
Fox (an ambi field medic who can actually shoot worth a crap, plus her personality is legendary around these parts, and she's a cheap date).
Later on down the road I'll almost always get Wolf, Lynx, and Ivan (in that order, from least to most expensive). From MERC I'll go with Biff and Flo so I can sell weapons in San Mona, and give money to Speck so he can hire more people). I've never tried Blood. I might give him a whirl. Magic and Shadow are overpriced and not necessary if you play the game right and level your people.
BTW, was anybody else pretty disappointed with Hitman? The official JA2 manual says he's a good starting merc, but I wasn't really impressed (especially his low Dexterity which makes his throwing skill less than stellar). I suppose his best asset is that he's optimistic and can contribute to morale.
I find the game more rewarding by not going with an IMP.

I should clarify. He doesn't hate, but he does dislike. If you look at the Opinions column, there's a lot of negative numbers. You don't "hate" until you get -25, but it does affect morale depending on who he interacts with. I think the developers wanted to drive home the point that people with the "loner" trait like Shadow, Reaper and Danny work best alone or in select small groups. When I had Danny in my team, his morale seems to rise the slowest and fall the fastest. I don't know what the hated nationality thing does exactly, but it does correspond to who people dislike or hate the most.
There's so much crap surrounding Buns I refuse to hire her anymore (even though I like Grunty).
Been trying Blood. He seems pretty cool. I might end up switching him out as my grenade chucker instead of Hitman. His martial arts also works pretty cool in the EFC.
So yeah, if I got to pick starting out, it would probably be:
Igor (night assault and pointman)
Grunty (same, but with HW capability)
Barry (explosives and mechanic)
Fox (field medic)
Blood (token black dude, grenade thrower, backup medic, and EFC champ - subject to revision ^_^)
The sixth slot would be filled after I dump Ira off in Drassen. Probably with Wolf (as designated marksman, backup to Barry, and a third backup medic). I'd use Lynx occasionally for long range sniping (appreciated in certain sectors) and use Ivan later in the game. Maybe some others depending on the situation. I don't really like MERC guys (never gotten Couger though).

Wolf, I dunno, as far as I remember he is like a jack of all trades, and since I have a specialized merc to cover each area, I don't really need him. I'll eyeball his stats next time I'm playing though. I remember I had him in my very early teams, like the first few times I played.
Hitman and Fox are both mercs I do hire for training militia. Usually first merc I get for militia training is Buns though, then Biff. Raider is a good militia trainer too.

Token black dude....
Blood is great.
Grunty is an excellent choice as well, only reason I don't get him every time is, low Strenght, I think 71. If I did train my mercs, I think he, once he gets his strenght up, is a better choice than Grizzly.
CagemonkeyI always bring Red along. The only good demolitions man for the first half of the game.
How about Barry? I think he is cheaper than red, and also (I think) has better Strenght, Agility and Wisdom, and comes with high Explosives skill.
El_Mucho_MuerteHere's some of my favorite combos:

have been trying different combinations of course, but i like Raven and quite often starting with IMP, Raven, Grizzly and Meltdown. thats sufficient gang to take Drassen airport, so MERC opens up. and i can call in Razor & Haywire - i hardly go anywhere without that pair.
playing Vietnam mod right now and i think i'm somewhere at 80% of the game, so - without any editing or cheats - Razor is level 8, marksmanship 87, explosives 82 (very many mines in Vietnam ), can patch his wounds, loves his work - what more can you wish...

Raven's alright. I just wish she could carry more gear though. Her Auto-Weapons means she's kinda wasted as a sniper.
Never tried Red because you really only need one explosives guy, and Barry fits the bill nicely through most of the game and he is cheaper.
Grizzy vs. Grunty? If you do night ops, go with Grunty. If you do day ops, go with Grizzly. The lower strength of Grunty is contrasted against the fact the you hopefully won't have to go too crazy with HW in night assault and he's more agile. Plus you can always raise Grunty's strength up a bit. HtH skill is now useless thanks to drop-all. If you like Dr. Q, than forget about Grizzly all together..

The two I always hire at the beginning and keep until the end (or their end, whatever happens first) are Thor and Wolf, sometimes also Ice and Igor (best guy you can get for your money) and my HtH expert IMP (don't try to tell me, HtH is useless... it's great fun, if you don't use drop-all and can bring greyshirts down with two well-placed punches or one hit with the crowbar)
I generally like to keep my guys from the beginning until the end, even if I could afford much better mercs... I just get kinda attached to them and it seems, that a team that worked together for weeks is simply better than some random mercs, who don't even know eachother. Yeah, I know it has no influence on any game values at all, but it feels right to me.

foijKensukeHtH skill is now useless thanks to drop-all.
Then turn drop all off. I love using my hth and stealing skills, it's also good for buffing stats. I now enter Omerta with mercs with no equipment, then proceed to clear the sector using nothing but fists and stealing to get all my starting equipment, usually on expert difficulty.
I've been mixing up my mercs nowadays. I'm staying away from the rebels lately. I used to always take Thor and Wolf however. But no matter what, I must have Maddog.
I agree, I have fine tuned it into an art. In the beginning of the game, I do what I like to call 'Smack 'n Grab' operations. At night time or during rain storms. Stun grenade, tear gas, flashbangs, retractable baton, knuckle dusters (for Grizzly) and Blood (I don't mean he is a tool, he can karate kick people in the face really good) are all fine tools of this trade.
I hit them, steal their crap and I get the heck out.
It kinda makes the rest of the game not as much fun, since I don't have to steal their crap. I still do if the opportunity presents itself (more crap to sell), but I dont go on Smack 'n Grab expeditions.

Misteretfor my core guys its team awesome:
Razor, Ira, Hamous, and Maddog.
Wow! We're REALLY scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Maybe you could add Shank to that team and make it more craptastic.
No offense dude. If anything, I admire that you're trying to make the most out of non-AIM people.
Quote:The only question is which merc do i want to handle the explosives: Razor or Hamous?
Neither, unless you're a masochist or would enjoy sponging up the bloody mess. Both are dumber than dogsh*t. If you really want to do things the hard way, use Ira for anything even the slightest bit intellectually challenging (ie. Leadership, Explosives, Mech, and Med). Or alternatively, hire Gumpy from MERC.

I've always thought like that.Don't like to trash someone who tagged along with me from scratch just to buy a superstar that doesn't know anybody and is getting only the "piece of cake" and final part.
I usually add people without trashing anybody, unless he/she was being just a mule/militia trainer and not doing any battles.

Jawz III know we had a thread like this, but I can't find it.
Your favourite team that you hire every time? I know everybody has a few favourite ones.
List them here.
My favourite team is centered around my 2 favourite merc's, Grizzly and Wolf.
My initial hires are Grizzly, Bull and Fox. Wolf joins after 2 towns, Nails after the 3rd.
- Grizzly: HW, good shot, good lines
- Wolf: Night ops, militia trainer, good shot, backup lockpicker, backup mech
- Fox: medic, militia trainer (learns shooting fast)
- Bull: good lines, boxing champ, and carries heavy stuff
- Nails: main lockpicker and mech, good shot, explosives guy (needs a bit of training)
- IMP: a good, agile point man is a good addition to this team.
Lots of team members need agility training (Grizzly, Bull, Nails), but thats all...

gpmgCore team from day 1:
Barry (smart, okay shooter, demolitions, lockpicking)
Igor (smart, good shooter)
Bull (Boxer, backup)
Malice (I just like the 'joual' Han? ) Great shooter and good morale. As an added bonus/minus, Ira hates him. "I can't stand that Malice person!"
Possible Extras:
Grizzly
MD
Grunty
Fox
Post insertion:
Flo (gun sales and training)
Gasket (repairs, if you're desperate he can be a decent fighter)
Haywire and Razor (too much fun to pass up!)
Freebies:
Ira (almost unavoidable but a decent medic and good trainer)
Dmitri (although he's not such a great recruit he's got decent repair skills and can shoot a bit)
If I feel like spending money after a week I hire Wolf and maybe Raven and later on Buzz. I can't think of any 'high end mercs" I've hired for more than a day or two. I find the low end mercs more entertaining and they usually progress fast enough to outstrip their betters.
1- Malice was part of my first game until I hired Ira.Sticked with her, cause she's free.
2- Need to remember this (probably) best aspect of her.Although at some point of the game, with the pockets full, you can trash her. :devilaugh:
3- If you are desperate, you don't have patience/time to invest in that moron for doing any combat. :headbanger:
4- Indeed.I always liked Razor(and even Haywire) lines, but that 50 in mrks were too low to me.

4- Shank? Good luck.....You've got patience there....
5- Robot.Used it only at the first time as it was amusing.Later on,haven't even tried to build it.

Team to start - Day 1
IMP [night ops/stealth]
Grunty
Igor
Wolf
Lynx
Len
I get Buns & Barry once Len & Lynx have left as I only hire them for 1 day.
Later I replace Wolf, Buns and Barry from the front line team and team them up with Ira, Carlos & Miguel to form the B team and get Trevor & Ivan & Scope for the A team to finish the liberation.
Maddog, Dynamo, Dimitri, Hamous, Haywire & Razor are the reserves.

My original one was Ivan, Grunty, Wolf, Fox, Ice, Smoke ("Like what you done with your hair, eh!" and later on Magic. Hitman was always great until JA2; I haven't hired him for a long time, even though he's a pleasant guy. In JA2, there are a couple natural groups that I go with depending on who's available and how I feel - Wolf, Fox and Grizzly ("That was close!" "Wasn't all _that_ close." "That was close. _I_ don't plan on missing.") (or actually, almost any male merc and Fox..) or Grunty, Igor, Thor and Ivan. I like Buns as much as I like Fox, but she gets a whole different cast of mercs. That's more entertaining with all these updates/restarts with newinv anyway. Anyway, I guess the two most indispensible guys are Barry and Thor. Barry's the most bang-for-your-buck guy around, and who cares if he gets tired easy and can't swim? Fox needs frequent 'naps' too, so they're good to have in the same team.. Plus I usually travel overloaded in the early stages anyway to get their strength up. Thor is just all-around great, and he can take the San Mona fights almost as soon as you can get him there with no boosts needed. MD seems like he should improve quick, but he never seems to (although he does seem to hit with auto fire way more often than I would expect), so I don't usually bother. Most of the rest of the low-level guys I've never cottoned to, although Red sounds fun. The MERC guys are mostly entertainment value alone except for Gasket, who always becomes my sit-in-Drassen-fixing-the-used-stuff-from-BR guy and later on Cougar and especially Gaston. I used to try Biff and Flo as townies to pump money into MERC while making sure that I got the goodies from invading squads, but Biff's way too annoying and neither of them gets better as fast as they look like they should. I agree about the high-priced pros - by the time I can afford them, I've usually got comfortable with my early team and they've usually got pretty good. I usually get Ivan and Magic for old times' sake, but the rest don't do it for me. I do like Nails, but that vest is a real drawback, even more than the old days. He can make a sniper, but it just seems so out of character. The locals are OK, but they usually end up as support rather than front-line guys (except Conrad, of course). Iggy's just not as good as he looks - don't know why. Maddog's always fun, though.
Hmm, upshot: IMP guy, Buns, Grunty, Igor, Barry, then as money allows, Ice and Thor. Or swap out Buns, Grunty and Ice for Fox, Grizzly and Wolf.

I try to mix members up with each new game, but the guys I've had most often are:
Barry (great potential, cheap, high mech, explosives, lockpicking, and I like his speech)
Gumpy (high wis and he usually ends up around 90 mark by end of game; I like turning him into a killer!)
Grizzly (mule, HW, can take a lot of hits, and good as point or sniper)
Ira (great militia trainer, decent sniper, can become a good medic)
Raven (in all the games I've played with her she was either top or top two kills no matter who else I'd hired. Great point lady with an AR and she's hot!)
Others I tend to favor:
Steroid (his enemies list sometimes means he's out for a particular run, but I really like him)
Thor (good medic, good wis, good militia trainer, good health, good all around)
Bull (big and strong, can play point or snipe, and I like his attitude)
I usually don't get the most expensive AIM guys, but when I do it's usually Shadow or Reaper. Other ones I like are Meltdown, Razor, Blood, Fidel, and Maddog.
Mercs I very rarely go with:
Raider (I feel jealous when he's around because I have a crush on Raven, and he has an annoying voice)
Buns (complains all the time)
Gus (not worth the price when I've opted for him)
Larry (one day I'll learn to manage his addiction problem but haven't yet!)
