What's your favorite gear loadout for your team? (Or your couple of "primary" characters that do the most fighting)
My current favorite is:
VSS Vintorez (attach foregrip, LAM-200, trigger group) - quiet, long range, comes with a scope, good damage, can go to full auto in a pinch, relatively low AP cost, not too heavy, ammo's not too exotic.
KCB knife (knife/wirecutters FTW!)
2 first aid kits
4 magazines for the rifle
Russian 106 vest
Dyneema armor with compound 18, leg protectors, and ceramic plates
Gas Mask
The best NV goggles I can get
Sun goggles
2 canteens (back in the day, I never used to equip these. My mercs used to die whenever they got caught in a crossfire, too. Funny, huh? Yeah, I was a moron.)
Full ghille suit
A canteen/AR mag/grenade leg rig
A reliable, silenced pistol with a 4 AP firing cost and AET ammo.
A holster rig or MP holster
A TIMS combat pack (no backpack)
This generally works really well for me. A trio of sneaky mercs can wipe out a small army of enemies at night and never be detected with this setup and some care, and the KCB knives come in very useful in Alma, Grumm, and other fence-heavy areas. I generally don't bother much with grenades.
Another favorite setup:
Similar to above, but instead of the VSS, dyneema armor and ghille suit, a full suit of EOD armor and an OICW or AICW with thermobaric and mustard gas grenades and a c-mag adapter. Slap this combo on a heavy-weapons expert like Stogie, Ivan or Gus and turn them loose on the enemy while the others sneak around to flank. The EOD armor and OICW make them a juggernaut of destruction that can take out clusters of enemies and draw all kinds of fire. You can even get away with "walking in the front door" for a turn or two before finding cover anywhere north of Balime. Once you get further south than that, the enemy has mortars and LAW rockets and (I've found, at least) the unsubtle approach is deadly.
I've given some thought to issuing FN SCARs to my team and giving them conversion kits so they can scavenge ammo all game and use whatever they have the most of. Anybody ever try that?

hey dieter,
Thats the RPK (7.62 version) he's using it takes the pso-1 (4x magnification i think?) and a reflex sight+ the shitty laser sight witch is mostly usesless =(, and a foregrip. It works good in daylight for "cluttered" maps i mean maps with lots of buildings and rocks and what not. The RPD is auto only so its not as versitile i dont really use it. 40+ enemys is where tactics and grenades come into play, plus my 2 auto mercs take all the damage usually.
My play style is mostly night fights but not exclusivly. The problem is day fighting turns into snipe fest, night battles are up close an dirty auto only, for me anyway. Also i useually use bout 4 mercs in my team, 2 auto guys (IMP & Ivan usually) and a sniper, spotter combo (usually my lowest marksmen merc takes the sniper so he level up fast, and a decent 'average' merc with a longer range AR to spot/cover)
They usually get followed by the dumbass team, i mean Ira to train milita, someone to repair stuff ect ect..
I dont usually use full HAM settings, moderate suppesion but no where near topped out.
damn this gotta be my longest post! im getting lost in all the detail!

Hm, if you like it up close like that you could try changing BASE_SIGHT_RANGE in the Ja2_Options.INI, the default setting is 13, which gets about doubled during the day, meaning about 26 tiles with the naked eye and no bushes etc.
You could try changing BASE_SIGHT_RANGE to something like 6 or 7 resulting in seeing as far during the day as you would normally at night. The night vision range would then be about 3 tiles, so a really dark night e.g. new moon.

Yes, this is a very good strategy, I almost always give my worst guys the best equipment, this way they are on the mediocre side, while the good guys do well no matter what.

Thanks for the welcome.
I'm currently working a pair of operatives through the game, and I wound up giving them a slightly different loadout.
My heavy hitter, Operator (Auto Weapons/Heavy Weapons), is using a FN SCAR-H SV with LAM/Flashlight, Battle Scope, AR suppressor and either a grenade launcher of grippod as the situation calls for. His support person, Griffin, uses an M21 EBR with a bipod, sniper suppressor, LAM/Flashlight and sniper scope. Both carry a combination of match and cold-loaded ammo. I've given some thought to giving Operator a machine gun instead, but none of the 7.62X51 machine guns support both semi-auto fire and the accessories I want to hook him up with. So now I'm trying to decide if I want to stick with what I've got, downgrade to 5.56 weapons, or grit my teeth and make due with a less-than-optimal choice. Being able to share ammo is absolutely critical with just a two-person IMP team in country, because even with fantastic gear and some occasional support from roaming militia, trying to take, for instance, a mine sector, is pretty ammo-intensive.

I would go for the HK21E anyway, despite the attachments. With tracer ammo you can't go wrong, but it has a high ready cost, so if you're moving your auto weapons guy a lot, this is bad. And it's heavy. My LMG guys don't change position a lot so that's ok.
Those that do move use indeed 5.56, Ares Shrike or FN Minimi SPW. I don't use semi-auto that much for MGs. I never had shortcomings of 5.56 ammo so I see no problem if two mercs don't use the same ammo as long as it's ammo that is very common. I wouldn't go for 5.56 for long range and sniping, tried it once and it was ridiculous.
I've currently got a team that is similar, but it's more like a classic sniper/spotter team. Raven switches between a bolt action and a semi-automatic sniper rifle depending on the situation (she has to put one in a backpack and drop it before combat though) while Raider serves at backup with an M16 EBR with tracer ammo and a cold loaded M4A1 equipped like your FN SCAR. He's strong enough to carry them both and the M16 works great in autofire with tracers or for sniping with match ammo.

My current team is loaded up with SCAR-H SVs (flashlight LAM, battle scope, grippod/underslung GL, reflex sight) for their primary weapon, Beretta 93rs (reflex sight, LAM-2000, pistol suppressor) for their sidearms, KCB knives, and one of the serbu shotguns loaded with lockbuster rounds (and flechette shells available), just in case they need it. The grenadiers carry two thermobaric 40mm grenades, a mustard gas, a tear gas, and a stun. Everybody else carries a mustard gas grenade and two pineapples. The explosives experts have C4 charges with remote detonators and triggers. Everybody else carries a shuriken in the small pocket on their vest.
The only exception, amusingly, is the sniper who uses an M21 EBR (Sniper scope, sniper suppressor, bipod, flashlight LAM) instead of a SCAR.
That mix, plus compound-18 treated dyneema armor with ghille, ceramic plates, and kneepads, level 4 NVGs, gas masks, sun goggles, and extended ears has allowed my team to savagely maul any opposition they encounter. NATO 7.62 ammo rifles are nicely lethal. (Why NATO stopped using them as the standard, I'll never know) I don't even bother trying to be sneaky over the long term, though I'll opportunistically cap a few redshirts with 9mm AET ammo on my way into a sector at night. The sounds of gunfire just draw the enemy into my sights. >

Depending on how I play or not, I always like to outfit my guys with SWAT armor, right off the get go, I don't deal a whole lot with heavy weapons, I love automatics, and I personally Really like the Diameco C7, you can make that gun Do almost anything you want, Cmag adapters, My usualy load out for my IMP is C7(Foregrip for those pshyco times,AR suppressor, Rifle LAM combo, Battle Scope), SWAT armor, Leg protectors, Cold HollowPoints, USP Silenced AET, KCB knife, Blackhawk vest, and combat pack, Best NVG's, Sun Goggles, Extended Ear for crappy militia battles, gasmask....I've solo'd most of the game with this set up...Ceramic plates too....buy the hmmvv...load it up with gear and hire some mercs....

I've gotten away from the Russian 106 and have been using the TT utility vest. One medium pocket for the NVGs, one for the gas mask, and a small pocket for the sun goggles. My mercs live in extended ears-those never come off unless they get gassed at night.
I tend to equip my squads more like blacks ops teams or special forces than long range recon. I use the Drassen airport as a kind of hub for operations and pull my team back to there after every major objective (town, prison, research lab) is taken. My teams drop in as close as they can safely get by helicopter, walk the rest of the way, wait until nightfall, go in, kill everybody quietly, set up a militia to cover the area, get back on the chopper, go back to Drassen, rest, rearm, and heal if they need it, and do it again.
I get almost as much fun out of the gear as the missions since 1.13.
