So the entire time I've played JA2, I've played Night Ops.
I love the challenge of sneaking in with a small stealth squad,
killing enemies with shuriken and silenced weapons.
But recently, as I've played more with 1.13, I've really enjoyed
utilizing weapons like the long-range sniper rifles and mortars
that are most effectively used during daylight battles.
I've also segued away from a frequent-reloading play-style as
I've gained more appreciation for good tactics as described by
many of the great posters here in these forums.
So I'm going to start a new game concentrating on Day Ops, and
I'd love some tips and opinions from those of you who prefer that
sort of play.
What's a good skillset for my IMP?
What are some good tactics you'd recommend (I know some basic stuff like leap-frogging and cover fire)?
Who are some favorite mercs for Day Ops?
How do you outfit your team?
What about favorite weapon choices?
Thanks in advance!

sandrockWhat's a good skillset for my IMP?
Not sure if you can go expert sniper in 1.13, if not, sniper/auto or sniper/heavy works well, teaching and night ops are both good choices too, even for a day ops IMP.
sandrockWhat are some good tactics you'd recommend (I know some basic stuff like leap-frogging and cover fire)?
I usually setup so I got all approaches covered with snipers, and if the enemy isn't coming, I send one person sneaking down one side, circling around but not too far from backup(about 1-1.5 screens), if it's clear, I move the rest up a bit, repeat.
sandrockWho are some favorite mercs for Day Ops?
Long list, but ones with the sniper skill, like Reaper and Gaston are great, now that the modders have decided that it's going to be so very important for sniping.
sandrockHow do you outfit your team?
Sniper rifles for nearly everyone, one HK21E per squad, and one Barret M82A2 per squad going to the heavy weapon/strongman until you give him a mortar, and a choice of backup weapon between HK MP7A1, Magpul PDR or Glock 18 to everyone.
sandrockWhat about favorite weapon choices?
General use sniper rifles: PSG1, MSG90, SR-25 and Dragunov SVD
Stronger sniper rifles: Barret M82A2 because it's a semi-auto, and the M2 Gepard for long range and 60 damage, can help against tanks I think.
Pistols: Only Glock 18 and HK MP7A1 are worth using, and both make good backup weapons, where the MP7 is probably all-around better, but the glock is lighter.
SMGs: Magpul PDR seems the best to me, with damage competing with 5.56 rifles, decent range(longest of the SMGs, without barrel extenders at least), low weight.
Assault rifles: I don't really use them
Battle rifles: I'm a bit partial to the SCAR-H SV, but the M14 is great too
Shotguns: Super-shorty mini shotgun makes a decent backup weapon for ambi mercs, give them two of them, preferably with reflex sights and barrel extenders.
Heavy weapons: Both mortars are good, which to use depends on strength of user... the FN EGLM is my favourite grenade launcher(decent range, low weight, you don't have to attach it to a weapon to use it you know...)
sandrockWhat's a good skillset for my IMP?
Depends on what mercs you want, I prefer auto/lockpick since I rarely take a mechanic in the beginning. But it all comes down to what you want to do and what mercs you will be using.
sandrockWhat are some good tactics you'd recommend (I know some basic stuff like leap-frogging and cover fire)?
Leap frogging is a great tactic and there's also a modified version of it for when you expect heavy resistance.
Basically it is a leap frog but you don't go ahead of the other group/merc. So when you come side by side with the other element you stop and then decides which team goes next.
At the end of the movement, standard leap frog:
[color:#FFCCCC]___________ OOOO
OOOO
End of movement modified leap frog:
OOOO OOOO
Each of the mercs covering a sector of course, preferably with ACOG or similar on the flanks and battle/sniper scopes in the middle.
Cover is the most important and probably the most overlooked part, get your mercs behind cover or you will regret it. But also remember cover can not replace fire and movement.
sandrockWho are some favorite mercs for Day Ops?
Ride fast and shoot straight. Movement and marksmanship is important, choose accordingly.
sandrockHow do you outfit your team?
No given configuration, I use whatever I find. Usually quick, fast firing weapons (M4 for example) or a machine gun (if the situation is somewhat static) on the flanks. Heavy hitters and a sometimes a designated marksman further in.
sandrockWhat about favorite weapon choices?
See above.
But I disagree with Kaerius choice of giving most of the team sniper rifles. I find it better and more importantly funnier to outfit my team as a real squad. But to each his own, play around a bit and you will see what you like.

If possible, add silencer to all weapons, especially sniper rifles.

What's a good skillset for my IMP?
That's your choice now... obviously, Night Ops is not needed, but everything else can be useful. You can try to go for stealth or rambo-style. My personal favourite is using the IMP as support and mechanic, because good mechanics are somewhat expensive for the beginning.
What are some good tactics you'd recommend (I know some basic stuff like leap-frogging and cover fire)?
Firstly, use bigger teams... in night ops, it is possible to to let mercs work alone or in teams of two, but during the day, I found squads of 3-6 mercs most useful. Sometimes it can even be a good tactic to storm a difficult sector with everybody you have. You have 18 mercs all over Arulco? This is the time to reunite them. However, if you don't have enough mercs for 2 teams, you should still try to divide them and do some flanking, or the enemy will lay down heavy crossfire on your 6 people who all decided to hide behind a single stone.
Secondly, use long range weapons and try to keep the enemy as far away as possible. That does not mean, that every merc has to be equipped with a sniper rifle (though that is a possibility). In a squad of 6, I ususally have a maximum of 1 sniper, 1-2 battle rifles(7.62x51mm) with battlescopes and 2 ARs with ACOGs, which are also used in a LMG role if necessary. I also try to have as many people as possible carry grenade launchers and mortars. During the day, the enemy will spot you sooner or later, so you might as well enter the battle with a boom. Heavy weapons can also be useful for securing a safe retreat if all the other tactics didn't help.
Who are some favorite mercs for Day Ops?
Everybody, who's not specialized on Night Ops... I like Thor, Wolf, Ice, Raider and Raven, but that's just personal preference. Look at the "Your favourite mercs"-thread for inspiration for some nice teams...
How do you outfit your team?
Long range, full auto and as much stuff that goes boom, as they can carry. For armor, I prefer full suits of treated Dyneema (or however it's spelled...), because it has the same properties as Spectra, but is a bit lighter. Good armor does save lifes sometimes.
Binoculars can be extremely useful, as they give you long sight range without the need to spend APs for aiming a rifle with a scope. It's always useful to know what the enemy is doing without them noticing you. Other than that, it's just the usual stuff... 1st aid kits, KCB knives and enough ammo for everyone.
What about favorite weapon choices?
Pistols: A Glock 18 as backup weapon for a sniper is ok, but other than that, I only use them in the very beginning, when there's no other choice. Of course the G11PDW and FiveseveN are also great, but I prefer to have the ammo readily available from dead enemies.
SMGs: I don't use them that often... the Magpul PDR is pretty cool, though. The Calico-thingy (the one with 50rounds 9x19mm mag) can be fun too, especially as a very light machine gun before you have access to better weapons.
Shotguns: I rarely use them... the USAS-12 with rod&spring and flechette ammo (in full auto) can be fun, though it's not that useful.
ARs: Colt Commando, the AK-100 series... it doesn't really matter, because the all have very similar in-game stats. I like any 5.56x45mm rifle with ACOG-reflex-combo, rod&spring and (depending on the role) laser+foregrip or underslung GL.
Battle rifles: SCAR-H (or SCAR-H SV) and M14 are also my favourites.
Snipers: All semiautomatic rifles, preferably in 7.62x51mm, so you don't need to buy ammo all the time. Very rarely, I also use a Barret M82A2 for extremely long range. Bolt action rifles may be useful for very long ranges in real life, but in the game, they have very little advantage and are way too slow.
Heavy weapons: Everything you can get your hand on, especially commando mortars... underslung GLs take up 2 valuable attachment slots, so you're probably better off with separate GLs.

What's a good skillset for my IMP?
Auto weapons / Heavy weapons / Throwing, any combo of these three or Sniper / Lock picking. Sniper rifles tend to be very heavy.
What are some good tactics you'd recommend?
Basically hard cover like trees and rocks, and covering all angles, and using corner of houses. Using your sniper to sight into the fog of war before turn base combat starts usually means I see them before they see me.
Who are some favorite mercs for Day Ops?
Many, many good people out there. Buzz and Ivan comes to mind. Or Lynx and Ice also works.
How do you outfit your team?
What about favorite weapon choices?
Depending on how tolerant you are to your mercs getting shot. I used to go for two 7.62x51mm ARs with Battle Scope (HK 417, M-14 EBR), two semi auto snipers (SVU, SR-25), one HK21E, and maybe a mortar or a SCAR-H. With this set up you can outrange your enemy, basically you have 4 or 5 DMRs and a machin gun, so you can stay behind the same rocks and not move, and not take many hits at all. Now, I'm much more tolerant to being shot, so I find some 5.56mm stuff are also very good, like M4 shriek and G36 RAS.
