On my first subway ride (regardless of which of the two subways I choose), I'm approached by thugs demanding money. When I try to give them some, I'm mowed down for the offer. A hail of gunfire (and sometimes grenades) before anyone can even act. Are the thugs supposed to shoot when I comply with their demands for money? If so, maybe I better avoid the subway for now.

 The thugs are a good way to build up skill points and some weapons by attacking them , there are ways to avoid immediate conflict , climb upon the buildings and pick your ambush spot for example .
You will take hits , but you gotta fight sometime Smile

Several mercs die or fall in a hail of automatic gunfire and grenades as soon as they exit the subway? Is that what's supposed to happen, then?

As I remember it ( while ago now )they talk/attack after you clear the turnstiles , why not attack them first ? Dont allow them to start talking ! Can't think I ever really got slaughtered by the subway gangs :whoknows: keep trying , you'll get there . save a lot if you have to , every turn till you get through it .

The guy appears and starts talking right away (I haven't even moved), and always shoots first with a hail of bullets (or a grenade that hits the whole group at once, depending on which subway I take.) The other thugs come from all directions, and even scope just can't hit them (fired something like 6 times, all misses, before she died last.) The other thugs hit at least 50% of the time from the same distance. I've tried it about 10 times now (glutton for punishment I am.) I didn't believe it at first, but those are the results. Completely, utterly, totally outgunned and outnumbered, attacked from all sides. It's just a complete and total massacre every time. SO, I HAVE to be doing something unbelievably wrong, if they aren't supposed to be that hard, but I've got one or two downed mercs before I can even take a shot.

 Well , I dont have it on my machine , so can't tryout and help , maybe avoid till armour and interrupt skills have improved , odd though ?

 Take the thugs under the arrival airport no bother yes? For the other subways just don't bother until you are levelled up a bit and have decent kit... then it's easy to get the drop on them especially as they don't do gasmasks... doh!

A good way to avoid being shot to death in some subway stations is that once the map loads you've got some seconds to react and click your team to go somewhere.
The "bad" NPC will walk to you and initiate a dialogue, but while you read what he has to say before attacking you your mercs can go and hide to safety.You just need to be quick enough to give moving orders before the guy walks up to your team.

This makes the battles a lot easier since you won't be interrupted in the beginning with 3-4 people taking their turn and shooting you and leaving you to deal with the mess.
