I'm having trouble understanding your post. Can you be more clear?

In JA2, caliber has nothing to do with how powerful a weapon is.
Weapon damage is set by the weapon itself, not by what type of caliber the weapon is.

If I had a 12.7mm rifle, edit it to have it do 1 damage per shot, it would be useless. It doesn't matter that the caliber of the rifle is still 12.7mm.

Calibre/caliber is the measurement of the diameter of the barrel (and thus the ammo). It is related to how powerful a weapon is but only for similar kinds of guns. For instance, the .45 handgun has a larger caliber than a .308 (7.62 mm) rifle but the .308 is a more powerful gun.

For rifles the .50's (12.7mm) are generally the most powerful.

I suggest that you take a look at this post:

http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=199401&page=1&fpart=1

But generally this is true:

Higher caliber = Higher accuracy, longer range, higher damage, higher burst penalty (this is bad) and lower magazine capacity.

The reason a .308 Winchester round(7.62mmx51mm) is much more powerful than a .45ACP (11.45mmx22.8mm) round has little to do with the caliber. More important is the LENGTH of the cartridge and the amount of propellant behind the bullet, which affects the muzzle velocity (in conjunction with the gun barrel) and the energy imparted by the bullet. Simply put, the .308 Winchester is a RIFLE cartridge, while the .45ACP is a HANDGUN cartridge.

Another example: which is more powerful, .50AE or .50BMG? Comparing caliber alone they should be the same right? In reality, the .50BMG is MUCH more powerful. Why? The .50AE (12.7mmx33mm) is again a HANDGUN cartridge, while the .50BMG (Browning Machine Gun, 12.7mmx99mm) is a RIFLE cartridge.

The same holds true even amongst handgun cartridges. Compare the 9mm Makarov PM to the 9mm Parabellum.

Also, caliber is a misnomer. a .38 Special bullet (bullet is 9.1mm, base diameter 9.6mm, 29.3mm long) is the EXACT SAME DIAMETER as a .357 Magnum bullet (bullet is 9.1mm, base is 9.6mm, 33mm long). The main difference is length of each cartridge.

Again, in JA2, caliber does not determine weapon damage. Weapon damage is tied to each gun. You can edit the caliber of any gun in game, and the weapon damage will remain the same, unless you edit that as well.

THANKS for yours lights

if i understand :
rifles are powerfull than hand guns even if the gun have a bigger "size", because of a longer "canon".
(that mean) if trevor put a barrel extender on fox' s glock, it should make biggers damages too!! ,no?

Not quite. It will increase penetration ability due to increased muzzle velocity. It does not necessarily increase damage. It will increase range however Wink

PCM+ was all Schienworlds addition. I am yet to play with that. I am making a HAM compatible version of the Single Click as well as a current version in the next week or so depending on Real Life commitments.

I understand this in the world, but does the game model this?

You're saying that within the JA2 engine adding a barrel extender increase the penetration ability of the weapons bullets fired?

Oh and yeah Happy birthday fellow Aussie.

Thanks mate, I was saying if anything that is what should happen. I am aware it has no affect ingame. It's badly worded though (as is this probably) as I normally end up writing stuff at stupid'o'clock in the morning.

With regards to JA2, I think there's a hidden table data somewhere regarding the "power" of cartridge types .. eg. both 7.62x51mm NATO and 9x19mm pistol are both AP bullets, but

Guardian vests and better (eg. Spectra, Dynema) protects against AP pistol rounds, but not against 7.62mm NATO and equivalents .. there's more than just weapon damage values and whether the bullet is AP or not.
