Some early trips, that is visiting of sectors at a point in the campaign you are not expected to.
San Mona
It's often suggested to march first to San Mona instead of Drassen. You get $10,000 for the easy Angel-Quest. You can make another $15,000 for boxing at Darren's. This money can be invested into buying better weapons from Tony.
Sounds reasonable, but has a few downsides:
The trip to San Mona will delay the conquest of Drassen mine for two or three days. That way you are loosing most of the money you earn by the quests in mining income; unless by chance the mine in Drassen is the one that will dry out after a few days.
For the boxing you either need three mercs good in HTH, or one being able of doing three such fights in a row. Another problem is that the boxing is somewhat bugged, from Darren and Kingpin suddenly opening fire at your team to the mercs behaving strange thereafter. In general I would suggest to leave Kingpin alone until you have a good team with good weapons and then kill him and his gang for a lot of loot in money and weapons.
Activating Tony that early in the campaign can become problematical too: Because of the huge ammount of calibers in 1.13 he will most likely offer you ammunition for weapons you don't have, and weapons for which neither he nor you have ammo, and for which you cannot expect to get any from the enemy in the near future. Once activated Tony will disappear when not having been visisted for some days. So unless you leave a merc there to keep Tony happy, this would be your first and only deal with him.
The Hicks (F10)
Another source for getting good weapons before attacking Drassen could be the hicks near Cambria. You will get two Mini-14s, a M79 and a couple of shotguns, plus some armour. The problem is of course to kill them with your small team armed with pistols. You can also trade a female merc for weapons with them. I wouldn't give away any of the AIM women for some shotguns, but in case you have activated early MERC you can trade Flo for weapons.
If you had been down there you should afterwards march via E11 to Drassen: Sometimes there is a building in this sector with some fine loot.
Raiding Alma (H13)
I would not suggest to take Alma before holding Cambria and having freed Dynamo from Tixa. Nevertheless making a short visit down there after having cleared up Drassen can be an option to get some good loot. You would only take this sector, grap everything you need and leave again. Despite the enemy will take it back after some hours, you will further stock loyalty in Alma for every battle you win near by, including those around Cambria.
You might get some rocket rifles (even though ammo for them would be hard to find), one or two Dragunovs, unfortunatly without the needed PSO-3 scopes - but an un-scoped Dragunov is still a better choice as main weapon than a Glock. The general has a G3, probably the most usefull weapon you can find at this stage of the game. Leave Krott and Conrad alone for when returning to Alma in earnest.
Finding Hamous
Before searching for Skyrider I would suggest to search for Hamous instead (the roads between Cambria and Omerta, Cambria and San Mona, and Drassen and Alma). Without having cleared at least two SAMs the chopper would be of limited use to you. The truck in return can serve as mobile base. You often find fuel at Drassen Airport and in B6, E9, and B14.
Estoni
Before attacking the second town you should make a trip to Estoni. You get another canister of fuel for free, can trade a bit with Jake, find some missing stuff for barrel extenders and R&S. You also get Maddog for free. He needs a bit more practicing in marksmanship and some combat experience, but otherwise has the physical stats of elite soldiers like Ivan or Shadow. If you can get him as early as possible he can become a real addition to your team.
The Long Ride (L10)
When having found Hamous, and in case you already have a large team (your 6 starting mercs, Ira, Dimitri, Hamous and then also Maddog) you might consider getting the Hummer to Drassen as well. In this case you would pack your six best mercs into the truck and drive them via San Mona, past Cambria and through Estoni down to L10. You will come across all patrols on these roads, so better drive at night.
You need to stay one day in that region, what shouldn't be to dangerous because you had already dealed with the patrols around when getting there. Afterwards you would pack three mercs on the Hummer, drive all back to Estoni, pack Maddog and return to Drassen with two vehicles full of loot.
The LAW-Depot (N7)
Instead of just hanging around for 24h to get the Hummer you might also consider to raid N7. You just need to drive on on this road for another three hours to get there. There would be one or two additional patrols and the garrision of those barracks to deal with, so better wait until night fall.
N7 already is very close to Meduna, so the guards would have some fine weapons (and attachements!) to be freed of. In one occasion I even had Mike standing sentry at the gate. Otherwise there are not to many enemies in this sector. The loot always includes a large number of LAWs.

@ Gorro
With shooting so many mercs yourself you might think about taking the Shilling in Deidranna's army, then you can legally shoot them all.
