Hi guys, A long time ago there was some interesting discussion about developing a mod for JA2 where the idea was that the action was taking place in the old west and that the primary object of the game was bank robbery. It took off for a bit but I'm pretty sure it died.

I had always thought it was a neat idea, though it might end up being too cumbersome to really pull off well. Still, it seems 1.13 (Particularly with the latest HAM 3.6 thing) makes this idea even more promising.

I wonder if that project has been long forgotten or if anyone else had ever picked up the idea?

Anyway, good to be back and posting again, at least for now!

(Oh, btw I'm getting re-acquainted with the forum again, if I'm posting in the wrong places, please just move... I promise it's unintentional)

There are a couple of threads around for Wild West mods that didn't made it, but the bank robbery plot is new to me too.

For the start I would suggest to make a Wild West weapons- and items-mod first by keeping the rest as it is. This is rather easy, compared to the rest of the required changes; such as helicopter and vehicles out, horses and trains in. Making a new plot would be about the last thing on the list to accomplish. BTW, in one of the other threads I had suggested a plot based on the movie Vera Cruz because that would require only minimal changes to the original plot.

Yeah, the weapons mod is important actually, but very easy now... as I understand it. We had done a few maps for it at one time.

Either way I guess it doesn't matter. I was just curious about it. Seemed like it might be a fun take on everything if it could be pulled off.

Yeah, I think the basic idea was to turn the mines into major banks where the income was coming from interest or something, and then there would be a smattering of smaller branches located around the island that would just be up for robbery or something.

The weapon mod basically is just revolvers and shotguns, with maybe a Winchester or two and possibly like an end game Gatling gun or something.

There is a bank in the Drassen equivalent in UC, you just walk in and take all their money. Well, you need to break into the locks and there is a security guard (sometimes), but other than that, it is real easy.

There also is a jewelry or something like that in WF's Balime. Lot's of gold, but also armed guards around.

The weapon mod basically is just revolvers and shotguns, with maybe a Winchester or two and possibly like an end game Gatling gun or something.

A bit more:

- muzzleloading smoothbore muskets
- muzzlelaoding rifles
- single-loading rifles (Dreyse, Chassepot etc)
- conversion kits for the above (Snyder-Enflied and the like)
- multi-loading rifles (Henry, Winchester etc)
- percussion revolvers
- single-action revolvers
- smoothbore single-shot (or double shot) pistols
- shotguns

and so on...

I said it's "rather easy", not it can be done one a single rainy sunday.

Didn't found a use for that so far: whenever I go down to Balime I am usually so rich that I don't need that extra cash. But may be it would be an idea for a very early raid; even though fighting it out with those guards - on top of the usual enemies - can be a bit tough for day two or three.

Having more money to loot, in form of banks to plunder in each town, instead of a fixed income could indeed make a new gaming experience.

Yupp... that's what I'm trying to do. I'm hidding stuff in the countryside as well (in the recent version one of those treasures can already be found, worth around 50k $). So grab your shovels and let the treasure hunt begin... the new maps will probably contain more of these. I might even up the value of the jewelery stores already in the mod (think meduna has one as well...).

And it indeed adds a new dimension to the financial aspects of the game. Often times the extra money can mean the difference of keeping a merc or having him leave (unless of course you're Tais and play with boatloads of cash...).

I don't know how successfull the others are in finding hidden stuff, but I discovered most of it only when starting to edit your maps myself. Even though, it is logical that those little yellow packages might include something, or that usually money is to be found in a cashier.

Well.. that's the fun stuff... the stuff is sometzimes actually hidden quite good, so people might indeed go out and explore the maps instead of just shooting enemies.

That 50k gold treasure is rather easy to find, if you pay attention to the map layout for example (and have played JA1 and found the treasure at Brenda's Lab...).

But the treasures in the new big maps might be a bit harder to find. I decided for example to hide the unique attachments I made in spots that could be a bit more difficult to find (also decided to put stuff into crates that are not accessable without some demolitions work, for example...).

I probably will also add civilian quotes that point to hidden stuff or at least give hints about it, once I'm actually filling the maps with civilians and factions... but at the moment that is still rather far away in the future...

How about some NPC, mike kind of that would drop a map or something ? Not sure if you can predefine an item drop from an npc tho.
