I'm running JA2 Gold with 1.13 build 4552, Insane difficulty, Normal item progression, Normal Bobby Ray, Drop All and NCTH.

I've ran into 2 problems, one on the strategic, and one on the tactical side.

Strategic one - is there a way to make the queen's troops target my mercs (the sectors my mercs are in) more aggressively, as opposed to just randomly attacking cities I've taken over? Fights that don't directly involve me don't really constitute a challenge, just a minor bother to send some of my mercs to bring the militia numbers back up.

Tactical one - my combats have started to boil down to setting up a defensive position (usually behind some corners), letting the AI come to me and interrupt the holy out of them. I've just finished a 4-hour-long fight for the first sector of Cambria, against 80+ enemies (mostly elites) without moving a single tile from the spot where I initially dug my mercs in (roof of Caffe). AI would run around the corner and get a interrupt headshot, rinse and repeat. Slightly more difficult to achieve in wilderness combats, but still too effective.
Also (through the Alt+E cheat) I've noticed a lot of enemy soldiers that have LoF (and even LoS) to me, who could've taken a pot shot or let loose some wild autofire to supress me, but instead they just ran up to me and got shot down in an interrupt.
I think I remember vanilla JA2 enemies taking more wild shots from cover, so I guess my first question would be - what caused this change, and can it be reverted manually? Another would be - is there any way to boost AI's abilites and stats to encourage a more aggressive behavior? Would boosting their CTH encourage them to shoot more and from further away, instead of trying to get close enough to get 100% chance?
(I guess it would be too much to hope there is a way to teach them to chuck grenades at corners. Razz)

P.S. I wasn't sure if this should go into regular discussion or 1.13 discussion, but I've noticed threads here that deal with tweaking 1.13's options.

There is more info about it in the 1.13 HQ.

1. In the options.ini tweak the "_ALERT_" options (and related) in the section "strategic enemy AI" to make AI in a way pursue detected mercs of yours.
(But naturally it's easier for AI to engage militia and makes mor sense to try to reduce your resources by retaking strategical important sectors like mines, SAM sites etc.)

2. There are rumors that this might be an issue with NCTH (AI seeing insufficient CTH to take a shot). You could try to switch back to OCTH and see if this makes AI shooting more ammo on you.

You should try HAM 5.5 it does improve the AI. It's not really smarter but it shoots more (suppression), and brings its forces in shooting position faster (rather than send 5 guys, let them die, then send 5 more, which is the vanilla behaviour).
