 Just started fooling around with this version, and I am puzzled by Doreen. First of all, we do not enter combat mode once I shoot at her, making her more difficult to bring down (since I actually have to hit her on the move). Secondly, there was no SMG in her locker. I don't really need it with my current group, but it might be useful for others.

 Doreen is a civilian. There is an option that causes non-combatant civilians not to be hostile when hit (otherwise one had to kill civilians if they were harmed in battle). This applies to Doreen to.

The SMG does not have a 100% chance of appearing.

 Ah, I'll have to check that switch.

Does experience gain vary by difficulty level? I'm playing on Novice to just check things out, and my IMPs are 4th lvl already, after only taking Drassen and recruiting Skyrider. 4th lvl on the 4th day seems kind of... rapid.

 It does. There are settings in the ini that control how much experience you need to level. Playing insane with novice settings will level you up fast, playing novice with insane settings... takes a while Smile
