As it was always strange to me that when I come to the city, most of the San Mona citizen's are suddenly called "KingPin", I decided to change the names in CivGroupNames.xml to prettier ones.

Two notes of what I decided to stick when improving the names:
  • As there was inconsistency in singular and plural forms used, I decided to use singular names, so the names are like "Kingpin's Goon" instead of "Kingpin's Goons"
  • I tried to avoid using NPC names in the CivGroup, tying them to the job performed, or a common surname (Cameron, Graham, DaSilva)
  • I tried to avoid using town name when not needed. There is no need to attach each group to the city, especially if some modder decides to rename the town name. Beside, we already know what city we are in. The only exceptions are "Alma Militia" and "Tixa Prisoner" to avooid confusion with regular "Militia" and "Prisoner" groups. I'm looking forward to suggestions of removing "Alma" and "Tixa" if anyone have any, though.
If you don't agree on any of the changes, comment!

List of the changes to names I've made:
  • Rebel -> [unchanged]
  • KingPin -> Kingpin's Goon
  • Sanmona Arms -> Arms Dealer (It's kind of spoiiler, as we initially do not know that Hans works as an Arms dealer. On the other hand, the same applies to Fatima upon met. But at least now CivNames are not shown over named NPCs.)
  • Angels -> DaSilva (there is two writings of these in the names - Angel's name is "Dasilva" while Maria's is "DaSilva". "Da Silva" and "DaSilva" shows more in Google than "Dasilva", so I decided to use the "DaSilva" name.
  • Beggars -> Beggar (where is this CivGroupName used?)
  • Tourists -> Tourist (I was thinking of "Kulba", but I think it's better to use the "job" performed naming when possible).
  • Alma Militia -> [unchanged]
  • Doctors -> Doctor
  • Couple1 -> Couple (I don't know where is it used too)
  • Hicks -> Hick
  • Warden -> [unchanged]
  • Junkyard -> Junkyard Worker (I thought of using "Cameron" but the story is similar to Kulba's)
  • Factory Kids -> Factory Kid
  • Queens -> Queen's (maybe a different name? "Queen's Troops"?)
  • Joey, Martha -> Graham
  • Devin -> [unchanged] ("Explosive Dealer"?)
  • Hamous -> [unchanged]
  • Terry -> [unchanged]
  • Dynamo, Shank -> Tixa Prisoner
  • Empty SlotX -> Empty Slot X
If you think the names for DaSilva, Graham, Devin, Hamous & Terry should be changed, feel free to comment Smile !

I also updated the files to match the formatting across the 3 folders. I also found out that the file in "Data-UB" folder still have JA2 names, while they aren't used I guess. If they aren't maybe they should be replaced with the general "Empty Slot"? That would ease up maintaining of files and free up some CivGroupNames for future use in the UB.

Also, please, if you spot any mistake in my names, especially since the English is still not my native language, post the comment here. I was especially unsure about the use of apostrophe and the "s" at the end of the name, so if anything's wrong/odd, reply in here with the proper name Smile.

Here are the files after modification.

Actually I think that it should be "da Silva". That's a common Portuguese and Brazilian last name. Lots of people also have "de Silva" or just "Silva".

[*]Queens -> Queen's (maybe a different name? "Queen's Troops"?)

Isn't that the "Queen's Guard"?

Seeing that Elliot and Joe are in this group (along with D herself) ... maybe something like Queen's Staff. Are there even guards in her palace aside from a f-load of blackshirts?

It might, but It'd require renaming the vanilla NPCs too. At least Maria's, as her name can be seen while escorting her. Though I have to admit, some NPCs don't have full name in the merc editor wrote down properly, and some do.

I'd suggest calling all the gun/explosive/other item dealers as Vendor.
thats nice and generic unless there is a reason to group them separately.

There is a reason to not assign the same name to different groups. In the map editor you want to be able to see the difference between them directly. There have been issues in the past with wrong group assignments (WF maps for example) and we don't want these to return.

From a mapping/modding PoV it'd be even better if we stick with names like "Devin" and "Sanmona arms" to Keep track who's who and where, IMHO.

Yes, it's probably a questionable decision to show these internal names in the first place for anything but debugging and mapping. If you want to have them though, making one field for internal and one for public names might be a beneficial move.

That may be a good idea Smile. It's just worth noting that like I mentioned before, currently some of these names are already shown ingame, and moreover, they are ready to be translated. Last time I checked, French version had them translated, but I decided to leave them alone with Polish translation until the original descriptions will get improved.
